  1. When Phillip returned, Casey had the whole house smelling wonderful. Luke asked, “Wow! That smells great; what is it?” Jeffry said, “That’s lasagna and, it smells spectacular.” James said, “Mom fed us before we left, but I’ve got to taste that.” For once, Phillip was glad for the big honking house. Cleaning everything was a day-long gig but, when you had company, there were plenty of places to stash guests. He said, “Bring your stuff and follow me. I’ll get you settled in your roo
  2. As quitting time loomed closer, Phillip was near pulling his hair out over the logistics of getting everyone to where they needed to be. Jeffry, James, Marcus, Luke and Jon-Jon would simply ride the bus home. Phillip planned to make a trip to see them later. Scotty Cross was spending the night with Timmy Callahan and would accompany Timmy and his Mom to the Grandparents house, so they were out of the picture. Phillip was delighted to see that those two had become good friends. Tanner
  3. Phillip re-read and edited what he had so far. He hoped Daniels and his bosses would be patient enough to read through it carefully. He caught motion on the SecureCam out of the corner of his eye, and he focused on it. Randy’s voice crackled over the radio, “Boss, I just saw Cole Lassiter and Ike Fields go upstairs. Better check that out. Cole’s playing out of his league— he’s seventeen.” Phillip responded, “I’ll check on it. It’s getting near quitting time. Let’s make sure everything

    Kickoff

After promising Seth and David a big surprise later, Phillip began typing an email. He had notes from his conversation with Jeffry about the Green brothers’ cousin Tyrone and that’s where he started typing. He included Tyrone’s name, apartment number, make, model and license plate of his car, place of employment Trans-Continental Shipping on the Interstate, his job of loading and unloaded interstate trucks and, his habit of taking home drugs in his car when he got off of work in the wee h
  5. Phillip took his notes from the furnishings he had moved to renovate the 2nd floor locker rooms and composed an email detailing what had gone where. That little chore took some time. As he worked, he kept an eye on the monitor to keep track of anything going on the 2nd floor. It was a quiet afternoon as the kids were busy playing basketball, soccer or swimming. Once he was done, he took a clipboard and went downstairs to take a look at the locker rooms used by the swimming team and th
  6. After Stevie departed, Mikie and Randy returned. Randy was particularly bouncy and asked, “What’s the story with our card players’ boss?” Phillip said, “You were there. It was just horny kids having fun. Skyler even invited me to join their game.” Mikie asked, “We know you talked to them. Come on, dish.” “I know the one you’re most interested in is Stevie, and I think I know what has turned him from a sweet kid into a red-headed porcupine. You guys went to Grayson Middle. You coul
  7. Mikie found Phillip and said, “Let’s head upstairs. It looks like that little matter we’ve been discussing might be happening soon.” They went to the office and when they were out of earshot of anyone, Mikie said, “Stevie and Skylar are here already. Randy got a good look at them and, they are blazed.” Phillip said, “Oh joy. They’re high. Where are our guys?” “Randy is downstairs with a radio looking busy and keeping an eye on our horndogs. Casey and Kelly are moving the stuff you

    Shopping

Just before lunch, Phillip left his minions in charge and borrowed the van. He took Scotty Cross and went to pick up the Green brothers for their shopping trip. All four of the brothers were clearly excited. Jon-Jon and Luke immediately took a liking to Scotty. Phillip took them to the mall that housed Wet Gear and several other stores of interest. Phillip asked, “First things first guys, you’ll need something to keep your stuff in. Do you want a gym bag or a backpack?” James a
  9. Many hands make for light work. With four assistants, Phillip had two-thirds of the Friday checklist accomplished by eleven thirty. As they were mopping the swimming team and public locker rooms in the pool annex, Mr. Campbell showed up with a clipboard and asked Phillip to take a walk. He asked, “How are you doing on those old locker rooms on the 2nd floor of the Annex?” Phillip replied, “All they really needed was a deep cleaning. They weren’t in bad shape but, they’ve been raided fo
  10. Phillip and Mikie huddled up in the locker room to discuss their plan for the swimming practice. Tuesdays and Thursdays were the main practice days. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays were optional. Usually they were for laps and what Mikie explained was individual coaching. Coach Hanson would work with his swimmers or, they would swim laps to work on their stamina. Participation wasn’t mandatory but, the serious swimmers and younger swimmers trying to move up could be expected. Mikie guessed that

    Friday

Five thirty came entirely too early for all concerned. Kelly groaned and said, “It can’t be time to get up. It’s like stupid o’clock.” Despite complaints and groaning, the guys started moving; except for Billy who was incoherent at stupid o’clock. Casey’s pancakes, sausage and Community coffee was just the trick to wake almost everyone up. After a quick breakfast everyone got quick showers, but Billy was still pretty droopy. Phillip carried him into the shower. When Billy figured out
  12. Of course the news broke for commercials and tried to sell Pepsi, Cadillacs and toothpaste. Breaking the awkward silence Casey said, “I’m going to have dinner ready in about five minutes.” Phillip said, “Thanks Casey. It smells awesome.” Billy Jackson stood up, hugged Phillip and said, “I’m going to help in the kitchen.” Phillip put his arms around Mikie and Randy and said, “Thank you guys. Now you all know what happened in Newport News and, I didn’t have to tell the stor

In the Green household, Detective Chris Butler was standing beside Rochelle Green. They had been talking over coffee at the kitchen table when the four boys called them in to see the news segment. Rochelle asked, “Are you sure that’s him?” James nodded and Marcus said, “Yeah, that Jeffry’s friend all right. We didn’t know he had lost his Mother and best friend.” Jon-Jon said, “He’s really nice. He brought Baskin-Robbins over and talked to us about the Y.” Detective Butler sai
  14. Someone had the local ABC affiliate on the television in the living room. They started with national and local news, sports and weather, and then they came to their Good News segment. Three windows appeared on the screen with the reporters Phillip had talked to earlier in the day. “Hi I am Daniel Sokolsky, and I’m with my colleagues Matt Stevens of Fox and Stacy Scott of the Banner.” The two other reporters gave a perfunctory, “Thanks Dan.” Stacy Scott said, “We went to c

    Casey

Casey made a thorough inspection of the kitchen, pantry, and freezer. He looked appalled at the spice rack. Casey’s verdict was: “I can do great things in this kitchen. We just need to get some food in it.” Phillip said, “Billy and I were talking it over. We were thinking tacos and maybe lasagna. Then I can grill a time or two and, we’ll need breakfast stuff.” Casey said, “That’s a decent plan for a start. I can do either one in my sleep. I have a couple of suggestions. You need a bl

    Bad Boys

There were two locker rooms on the 2nd floor of the pool annex building. They hadn’t been used for years since competitions had started being hosted at a nearby Junior College. One of Phillip’s side projects was to get them in shape for kids like Scotty to use that were intimidated by being naked in front of a crowd. As Phillip was working to get one of the Sanctuary locker rooms in shape for use, the phone in his office rang once. Phillip had it forwarded and the call bounced to his cell
  18. Phillip spent the rest of the afternoon taking care of his Thursday checklist and having light conversations with a few kids. About four, Seth and David caught up with him and wanted to have a word so they retreated to his office. Seth said, “When I talked to my Grandma a few minutes ago, she said some reporters had come by and asked her questions about you.” Phillip said, “Me? What did they ask?” David said, “Grandma doesn’t suffer fools well Phillip. It’s not what they asked, it
  19. They arrived at the Y and they all made their appointed rounds. Phillip got on his computer and logged his time. He took a look back at the SecureCamDVR and saw that about ten after two, a number of members of the Gentlemen’s club had used the mat room. Later, he saw four kids go in the bathroom and stay for fifteen minutes. He rolled it back to get a good look and saw that it was four of the neighborhood kids who came in the afternoons, not any of the swimmers or day-campers. He recognize
  20. After having a word with Mr. Cassidy, Phillip gathered Tanner and Jeffry and left in his car. Tanner asked, “Where are we going?” Phillip said, “First Baskin-Robbins and then to see some of Jeffry’s friends we are trying to get to come to the Y as day-campers.” Jeffry said, “You’ll like them Tanner. They’re cool.” Tanner replied, “Cool”, but was unclear on whether he was excited about ice cream, meeting new friends or Phillip’s promise. Phillip had spotted the Baskin-Robb
  21. Phillip went to the office and had a word with Mr. Campbell about the four Green boys. Once again Phillip surprised him. When he asked his boss for an hour after the hospital visit, Campbell was happy to oblige. Frank Cassidy was in charge of loading up the van to visit Rodney. Only eight kids could go and most of them were from his age group but, Jeffry and Tanner were going. As Phillip planned to visit the Green brothers, he followed in his car. They arrived shortly before two and

    Oswald's Answer

    Stay tuned.
  23. Philip had lunch with Mikie, Randy and Tanner. Tanner could make a dead person smile and helped Phillip recover from the funk the interview had unleashed. It didn’t take long before he was smiling again surrounded by a small crowd of happy day campers. His phone rang and he saw it was Mr. Oswald. He excused himself and headed for a quieter spot to take the call. Phillip answered on the fourth ring. It was obvious Oswald was in a good mood. He wasted no time, “Little Phil: I tal

Stacy Scott got in her news van and opened her laptop. She did a Google search: Phillip Wright, maritime, attorney, fatal, accident, and March. She wasn’t sure where Phillip was from, so she ran the search as is. She clicked the first link from the Virginian-Pilot of Newport-News, Virginia: Three Killed in Four Car Accident with a Semi on 264 Near McArthur Center. Phillip’s story was instantly verified. Gwen Wright, Angelica and Javier Perez were all listed as dead at the scene. She
  25. On his way back upstairs, Tanner and Ryan saw Phillip and followed him up. Tanner asked, “What’s wrong Phillip?” Phillip said, “Those reporters brought up something that happened before I moved here that really spaced me out. Please don’t ask. It’ll be in the news, so everybody will know, and I won’t have to tell the story over and over.” Tanner did what he always does that made Phillip’s day: hugged him like only Tanner could. Ryan asked, “Tanner, I need to talk to Phillip
