Then Came You Into My Life - 5. Chapter 5

Chapter 5

After my last class, I walked slowly to my locker not looking forward to the conversation with Jarrod. I went out the big doors and saw Jarrod and Chance standing at the gate. I walked over there and all three of us took off heading home, I didn’t say anything to either one. If they want to talk then they would have to bring it up, not me. Jarrod looked at me and bumped my shoulder to get attention. “Yes?” I said to him.

“You said you would talk to him so start talking,” Jarrod whispered in my ear.

“Excuse me, when did I say that to you. If I remember correctly it was you that said I needed to talk to him all I did was shake my head,” I said with a smile on my face.

“Zane, I don’t know what happened the other day in class. I know what you said to me when I asked you about it, but it confused me, so I asked Jarrod and he would not say anything. So would you please tell me what I did wrong, I would very much like to be a friend of yours if you would like that too. I know Jarrod and you have been friends for a very long time and I would like to be included as a friend as well,” Chance said to me. He put his hand on my arm and I got the biggest shock go up my arm that I had to pull my arm away from him. I looked up at him when I did that and he had a lost look in his eyes.

“Chance, I don’t like to be laughed at and when you laughed at me in class the other day I got pissed. Jarrod did the same thing a long time ago and I got pissed at him too. We talked it out and still stayed friends but he knows the limit on laughing at me. You need to understand I hate being laughed at and I will get pissed when you do it.” I stopped walking and told Chance.

Chance looked at me then Jarrod looking confused. “He is telling you the truth Chance. He does get mad when you laugh at him, I found out the same way you just did. It took me longer to find out because I had no one to turn to, like you did,” Jarrod said

“If you get mad because somebody laughs at you, not in a mean way, how do you handle it then? Because if I remember correctly I did not do it in a hateful manner? I caught you staring at me and I thought it was funny with the look you had on your face when I caught you. Your face was turning red, then all of a sudden; you looked pissed off at me. I did not mean to do that to you, if I had known you would get mad at me, I would not have done it. I am really sorry I did that.” Chance looked like he was upset at himself for making me mad.

I took his hand, shook it and told him “Now you know like Jarrod does, so just do what he does.” I dropped his hand.

Chance smiled at me and looked at Jarrod asking. “And what do you do?”

“Make him stand there and tell him why I was laughing. He has gotten a lot better when I do it because we have known each other longer, so you will get the hang of it,” Jarrod said then stated laughing at Chance’s expression.

“Let’s start over. Hi, I’m Zane. Nice to meet you.” I shook Chance’s hand and smiled at him.

“Nice to meet you Zane. I’m Chance and I hope we can be good friends,” Chance said shaking my hand with a big smile.

We continued walking and just chatted about nothing, we got to my house and I told them good-bye.

“I will call you when I get home, ok?” Jarrod said looking at me with a raised eyebrow.

“Sure, no problem.” I looked at Chance and smiled at him, he smiled back at me. “See ya tomorrow.”

“See ya in the morning, wait for me and I will walk with you to school, Ok?” Chance said.

“Ok, see ya then. Have a good night.” I smiled at Chance.

                                                               **********

I got up, got my shower and got ready for school. I met Jarrod outside, we stood there and waited for Chance but he did not show so we decided to start walking thinking he was running late and he would catch up to us. “Jarrod, did he call you last night?”

“No, when we got to my house yesterday, he said he would see me outside in the morning, but he did not show so I thought maybe he had just went to your house.”

“Maybe he is at school already. He will let us know why he did not show up, hope he is ok.”

“Ya, me too.”

We got to the school gate and saw some kids have another kid on the ground hitting on him. When I looked closer, I saw the guy that was being held down was Chance. I took off running to help Chance, when I got there; I pulled Jimmy off him and helped Chance to his feet.

“What the fuck is going on? I told you three punks if I caught you picking on one more person here at school I was going to kick your asses. We had our talk not even four months ago and school just started a month ago and you are already starting shit again.”

Jimmy got up off the ground and came face to face with me. “He is a fag and I’m going to kick his ass out of this school. We don’t want queer’s in this school.”

“Jimmy, you had better get out of my face and shut up. You know your Dad will do more damage than I would, if I told him what I just saw you were doing. I don’t care if there are gay boys or girls in this school. They have a right to be here the same as you and everybody else.” I looked at Jarrod and saw that he had the other two on the ground not letting them get up. I would not want to go up against Jarrod in a fight and those two on the ground knew that.

I turned to Chance to make sure he was ok “You ok, Chance?”

“Ya, I’m fine. Thanks for the help,” Chance said looking at Zane.

“Jimmy, I’m going to say this one time and you had better listen. You ever touch or say one mean word to Chance again I will come and kick your ass. I don’t care where you see him if you can’t say something nice, don’t open your mouth.”

“Zane, when did you start protecting fag’s? I don’t want them kind in this school or around my friends.”

“You are nothing but a bully Jimmy and I meant what I said I will kick your ass. You and your buddies leave everybody alone, they didn’t come to school to be bullied, they came here to learn just like you. SO LEAVE THEM THE FUCK ALONE.”

“I don’t think so Zane, he will be by himself sometime.”

“Ya, he might be but if I find out you or your friends laid one finger on him, I will kick your ass. He is my friend so what does that mean Jimmy?”

“Leave him alone. But he is a fag.”

“How do you know he is gay, Jimmy? Has he been hitting on you? I don’t know anybody that would want to be with you and your skanky ass. You disgust me with this hate you have.” I looked at Jimmy with as much hate on my face as I could.

“I was told yesterday that he had to leave Texas because the school he was going to found out that he was gay and they kicked him out.” Jimmy looked over at Chance with an evil smile.

“Well who ever told you that lied there ass off. I have to let my mom know that one she will get a good laugh out of that.” Chance laughed at Jimmy.

“It does not matter why he moved here Jimmy, you keep your hands off of him,” I told Jimmy then looked at Jarrod telling him.

“Let’s go, these punks are not worth it.” I looked at Jimmy one last time.

“Jimmy you better remember what I said because if this happens again we will have another talk and you will not like it when I’m done talking.”
