2015 poems - 9. Failure and Empathy

“I lost, and you know what.

I’m ok with that.”

The words leave my mouth

And seem almost unreal,

Truly unexpected.

I guess this is what my dad meant

When he said; I would grow up someday.

That I would see the forest for the tress,

And feel the beating heart of my own humanity,

Reverberating from the alien form of some other being.
