Mic check one-two... All green. Audio Log... 2? Does the first one count?

So, I developed a little program that would upload my voice recordings to a few servers online. That should make sure there's a trace of me somewhere.

There were two people earlier last night. Two ladies. One of them was kinda tomboy-ish.

My mom went back inside to discuss ways to turn them away from the bedspace we were renting out. Says she couldn't handle having filthy monsters in any of her homes. Says it disrupts the Lord's blessings.

I tried to speak up and she... well, she just kinda slapped me. It stung for a b it. Physically. Well, you get the idea.

So yeah, she turned them away without really getting to know them past... what, exactly? Was it their jobs? Or were those ladies, uh, you know... Well, either case, she barely talked to them and she got all... scary. I guess that's one word for it.

When they left, mom started a prayer vigil with the family. It was less peaceful and more... aggressive. It's the nicest word I can think of.

Stuff like this happens every now and then. I've gotten used to it; that's what I'm scared of.

I better go; I hear footsteps. Signing Out.

Hm, dammit, stupid mouse.

Mic test one-two... Well, glad to know my mic resists echoes.

I found a little door in my room. It led to this sort of... hiding hole. Must have been left over from the previous owners. I set up my recording equipment here. The wifi doesn't reach too well here but that's what flash drives are for.

I still have to watch my voice, but I have a peephole here, too, where I can look out and see if anyone's inside my room. I don't want them finding this place.

It's out of site from the window in our bedroom, so they can't spy on me through the hallway. I swear, sometimes I feel like a prisoner in my own home.

Well, everything's at peace. Family prayers and just overall family love. If you can call it that.

I'm more inclined to describe it as social and emotional blackmail.

I keep saying they're good people but... I'm just not sure. There's always a fight every other night. If it's not about the family business ventures, it's just blackmailing and praying to God things will be fine.

That's just... that's the best solution you can come up with? Really?

Ugh, sorry, got ahead of myself there. Hold on...

(moving noise)

Okay, coast is clear, but let's not risk it. Signing out.

Mic check... Okay, good.

So, there was this shooting at a night club on the news. We were having dinner when we saw it. My parents said the victims got what they deserved and I just... felt sick. I had to beg off early.

I'll probably just eat some snacks when they're all asleep. If I'm lucky. My brother's awake until eleven most nights.
I can't climb out of the windows just to sneak to the convenience store... we have bars on our windows. Classic prison cell.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with them. These... fuck, I can't even call them my family like this. It doesn't... It doesn't FEEL right.

Help me, I'm scared.... Help....

LIAM: Hello?

NOEL: Hello, Liam?

LIAM: Ellie, yeah it's me.

NOEL: Oh thank god.

LIAM: Ellie... is something wrong? You don't sound too good. What's up, babe?

NOEL: My parents, they... the news and they...

LIAM: The news?

NOEL: The nightclub? Didn't you see it?

LIAM: ...What did they say?

NOEL: They're...rejoicing downstairs.

LIAM: ...Rejoicing?

NOEL: Practically preening over the news feeds.

LIAM: ...That's fucked up.

NOEL: I need to get out. Fuck, I don't know where to go but I need to get out.

LIAM: ...You can stay in my place and--

NOEL: No, they'll find you. Shit, I... I'll think of something.

LIAM: Look, you can hide out here. You don't have to tell anyone.

NOEL: It wouldn't do for me to leave and just die on the streets, though that might actually be better. Let me come up with something. It could take some months.

LIAM: If it really is that dangerous, let me help you.

NOEL: It isn't, really. Not yet, anyway. I can... Well, let me think this over for now. Tonight's messed me up really bad.

LIAM: Listen, just call if you think it's getting worse.

NOEL: I'll... keep that in mind. Thanks, Liam.

NOEL: Just stay safe, you hear?

@LIAM: What's going on?

@root: Mr. Markov? Liam Markov?

@LIAM: Who is this? Noel?

@root: I'm afraid not, Sir. This is Investigator Howard Thomas.

@LIAM: So you're working on the case?

@root: The case you sent, yes. Did you know your boyfriend was a skilled programmer?

@LIAM: He always aced computer class.

@root: This program we're on is a barebones chat room, but I think it just breached a firewall to reach your phone.

@LIAM: How did he get my number here?

@root: We're still working on that.

@LIAM: Did you find Noel?

@root: Not yet.

@LIAM: I knew I shouldn't have left him there.

@root: He was entirely capable of leaving.

@LIAM: I swear I'll beat the shit out of you if you say this was his fault.

@root: At ease, jarhead. We're still going over the files. As of now, his parents are in custody. We have liberty to investigate this house top to bottom.

@LIAM: Just find him please

@root: We will. But something tells me this computer knows what happened.

@LIAM: What makes you say that?

Backup profile [Liam] recovered

Chapter Comments

I read the first chapter without any real idea of where it was going. It was intriguing but nothing much else. This chapter is so much better - now we have context, plot,, characters to get attached to ... :) I'm looking forward to where you're going to take this. :yes:

Glad that worked out, then. XD

I seriously need to learn to establish this better. Might have to make the finished product a single overall log of sorts.
