Love Looked at Me and Laughed and other poems - 6. Impotent powerless love

.

Poem No. 12

To be free of this freedom

where two people

together drown

in their loneliness

I am just bracing myself

for the torment

that will follow

from your next descent

I have no more freedom

than I want to have

and dream

in the pleasure of your smile

Poem No. 13

Prelude:

Impotent, powerless love,

unable to control even the least.

Ineffectual to change you or the world,

I can’t even make you believe me.

I am no comfort to your every solace,

I am no relief to your every pain.

Impotent, powerless am I

to affect your sight of me.

And yet, this love for you

only burns the brighter;

every moment with you

fuels the passion lighter.

I love you, that I know,

and there’s nothing you can do

to make it any less so –

there’s nowhere for me to go.

Through the pain of it all,

through misunderstanding’s call,

however often you fall

I’ll be constant through it all.

For I love you;

my sweet surrender to the fact

has left me with nothing to prove,

yet paralyzed to act.

Poem:

There is a love few of us know.

It springs upon you suddenly,

And when the time must come to let it go,

It can hit you horribly.

When you’ve looked for it for so long,

And given up hope of finding,

Then you will tumble over it headlong,

And not remember ever standing.

There is a love few of you know.

It leaves you staggered in pain,

Begging for it to simply go,

But terrified it won’t remain.

My love for you is my life;

Every breath only heightens it.

From now to the end of my fight,

I must rejoice having known it.

There is the almost delerious, intense pleasure in love, that quality of experience that heightens every sense in overwhelming the rational self. You capture this perfectly, while yet retaining enough of the poet’s observation to share it with us. This result is quite beautiful. Thank you.

Lovely comments. Thank you, Parker, my dear friend

You look at love from the mountain top, and from beside it while holding it in your hand. And you tell us how it both looks from above and how it feels. These are beautiful AC.

You're kind to leave a comment, Tim. And what a wonderful comment it is! A two-fold vantage....yes, you have stated it so brilliantly. Thanks again

AC, while both poems are fantastic and excellently written, Number 12 spoke to me the most.

It felt to me that the writer is in love with a person fighting inner demons. Those demons being depression or bipolar disorder. How they are there for them in both high and low points. Profoundly moving.

Thank you, A. I don't suppose I thought anyone would be able to "read" these poems to that depth, but you have. Yes, it's exactly as you say. It's hard for me to remember Brian that way, but he was very upfront about his struggles and the professional help he needed/received. You've blown me away, A, but thank you ❤️

You're Welcome, AC. I recognized it from being on the side fighting the demons. There were a few that I've always wondered why they stayed with me for as long as they did.

12 is painful to read in some ways. I have lived with a person who struggles with mental illness. It is a day-by-day battle for them, but also for the people who love them. We love them, and when they slide away and all we can do is watch it happen. All we can do is pick them up, over-and -over again.

13. We remain, the ones who watch our lovers suffer. We wish we could fight their demons, but we cannot. How can we let go of it?  There are many nights I've wondered as I watched my husband suffer. And sometimes wonder how I would cope in the face of the worst.

Beautiful both of these, AC.
