The Home - 47. Chapter 47

Epilogue

I have retired from teaching. I had an excellent replacement, Vic took over as Professor of History, even occupying my desk. He had married a distant cousin of Amalia’s and now has two children, a boy named Antonio and a boy named Victorio; they are twins.

Frank married Angela after receiving his master’s degree in Civil Engineering. They are expecting their second child. Angela’s first child was a girl, and they named her Susan after Frank’s mother.

The house was getting crowded, but the boys didn’t want it any other way, and neither did I.

Mom and Dad are not doing so well. They are at that age when their systems start to break down. I spend a lot of time with them, even asking them to move in with Amalia and me. They refused, saying they would be alright in the cottage. I closely follow up with their doctors to be sure they are taking their Meds.

Amalia’s dad has passed on and is buried in the Church’s cemetery. Not too far from Frank’s mother. I decided to buy additional lots for her mother, my parents, and Amalia, and me.

Amo has a total of three children, two boys, and one girl. He named the girl after his mother and Clair. They call her Clair, which satisfied Clair’s parents.

Brad and Tom are responsible for a child who now occupies Charlie’s old room. The child was using the school’s showers when Tom and Brad worked late and heard the shower. When they checked, a 12-year-old boy was taking a shower. He said he lived with his grandparents. Brad went and checked and found he did live there, but his grandparents were becoming senile and didn’t remember him. The boys brought him home, and he now occupies Charlie’s old room. Brad went and hired a lawyer and obtained a release from his grandparents. Tom said they weren’t even aware of what they signed.

Now, Brad and Tom are his guardians, and Danny is happy. He helps on the farm, and they give him an allowance as payment for helping with the farm.

One nice thing about being retired, I can sleep in unless it is a weekend. Then I am mobbed by grandchildren.
“Nonno, get up. Nonna said breakfast is ready.” I hear that every Saturday and Sunday. I pretend not to hear them. They climb on the bed and try and open my eyes, then I grab them, tickling them until they run out of my reach. They are not as good as an alarm clock, can’t shut them off. But it is a lot more fun to be awakened by them. Amalia said I pretend to sleep late on weekends just so the children can wake me. The funny part, she is right.

Vic and Frank are aware of what is under the wine barrels. Vic knows the combination to the safe, and when I go, he will get the ring and the house.

The farm has grown since I first occupied the house. I have built homes for Amo, Vic, and Frank. The horses that pull the carriage are pulling a different carriage in heaven. That is what we told the children when the horses died. A few years ago, we bought four more, and they are being trained.

Many of the animals we had when I first lived on the farm are no longer alive. They have been replaced and, with Clair’s help, are doing well. We still sell our products to the family market under our name. Brad and Tom make the deliveries, but I suspect that will change as the older grandchildren start to drive.

Life has been good to me, and when I make the next move to join my ancestors, I will do so willingly. I know I’ll be visiting Vic, and he will catch me up on all of the latest news.

Maria, yes I forgot her because she married a young man she had met in high school and she moved with him when he took a job out of state.

Cal:

Mille Grazie and Thank You for another wonderful story, and a very proper epilogue. Almost everything wrapped up in a nice package. You've brought us up to date on Tony and his extended family;  some people laid to a proper rest and joining their forebears, others off to raise their own families.

As much as Tony 'took in' Frank, Brad and Tom learning from that example, they are now paying it forward by 'taking in' and becoming 'Guardians' for the 12-year old boy found in the school showers, who although not homeless or abandoned as he lives with his elderly grandparents, their age and health precludes them raising him. The young boy lives in Charlie's room and perhaps will be visited by Charlie, in much the same way Frank's mother came to visit him as a boy.

As for the next 'keeper' of the Carignano family legacy (named after the village in Italy where the original 1800's King :joe: came from), Tony and Amalia's eldest - Vic - will receive the ancient family ring (given by the King to his illegitimate first born son who when exiled became the start of the family in America from which Tony descended) at the appropriate time as 'next in line'.  Along with his 'brother' Frank they will oversee maintaining the family and it's birthright resources guiding the family safely into the future, hopefully with Vic continuing to write the family history journals, as his father Tony did once he discovered them after inheriting the house and grounds.

I so look forward to your next story Cal, and future stories.

:thankyou:

Tony Cloche

Thanks Tony, a nice, concise wrap-up./

Loved it... Still in love with Tony and home there will be a new generation leading the way in the journals of the home. Maybe we'll even be able to following Vic and Frank as their families grow.

Another wonderful, comforting story.  Family has no blood bounds. You told that truth beautifully.
