Cadence - 3. Chapter 3
Too soon that well-worn path must I ascend,
which takes one to that land much written of,
where many of a paradise have penned
beyond the east horizon far above.
The grey ones who this pilgrimage once trod
with their unnumbered feet buffed every stone
and beat this trail into a highway broad
with guides to make the landmarks better known.
Yet once I climb up to that highest pass,
no cheerful sunlit prospects there await,
but swirling mists which rise from each crevasse
obscuring any glimmer of my fate.
Alone into that country I’ll come through,
with nothing but my memory of you.
In margins,
between the traffic lanes,
red-orange poppies and golden clover
burst in clumps amid the urban fields of concrete,
accepting as fact that life is hard,
but striving to outshine
all that is.
Here again, each of us wrote a poem.
