A Man in a Room, and other poems - 21. Night Thoughts
Poem No. 56
Life is only the chance to live.
Poem No. 57
People rush from popcorn to polish,
from socks to scarves;
People in shopping rudeness,
in and out of F. W. Woolworth.
Poem No. 58
Night thoughts
pour from some daytime hiding place boldly
speaking frankly of life's dangers fraught
teasing me with what could be, if only
I had more than a mere nighttime thought
To stand and fight is all I have
when they seek to crawl into me.
Nothing matters, nothing that I have
when night thoughts slide into me.
To stand and fight is all I have.
Those doubts and worries abound
saying: "Do something; get up; get a life"
screaming in my ear till I shake from the sound
how I'd like to remove them with a knife
those worrying doubts, which abound
To stand and fight is all I have
when they seek to crawl into me.
Nothing matters, nothing that I have
when night thoughts slide into me.
To stand and fight is all I have.
Life's a dream, don’t they know
man is man with fault and fear
to be perfect is not human, so
why do we hold the ideal yet dear
when life's a dream we all know.
To stand and fight is all I have
when they seek to crawl into me.
Nothing matters, nothing that I have
when night thoughts slide into me.
To stand and fight is all I have.
