A Man in a Room, and other poems - 16. a summer song

Poem No. 41

Prelude:

Summer is a time of fireflies and firemen's

picnics

A time for dreams to be made and

smashed

Something in the air speaks of doubt

of the most horrible of fears

Summer is a time of fireflies and firemen's

picnics

And thinking of being alone.

Poem:

Nothing can be as sweet as summer air

with the gentle smell of hay upon it

Nothing can speak of subtler fare

than those who won't deny it

To ponder the myth that delight is eternal

is a power that the breeze always has

To make it true and external

is its promise from long in the past

Nothing can be as sweet as summer air

with dreams of men astride it

No one can live a subtler flair

than the ones who can't describe it.

Postlude:

The power of summer nights

are strong;

They give us clues to the strength

within ourselves.

Poem No. 42

A gentle melody flowed through my head –

before I could believe it, it was gone

Now in shade I wonder if it can be –

wonder how such a thing could be.

Come Sweet May[1]

Poem No. 43

Rest

Requiem you people of the past

know that your gifts are here

Known by some, available to all

In ignorance we look at you

in wonder we see what you left

The fate of the '80s is the same

So I'll rest in the same wonderment

as all people of the past

Knowing that I've lived and died the same.

I sit back in my chair in the last of the summer sun, contemplating these. They are brilliant introspections, engaging notions and sage reflections. Some phrases which caught my attention:

dreams to be made and smashed...and hearts broken, if it comes to that...

...the myth that delight is eternal...the days of summer always seem endless...

...summer air with dreams of men astride it...

...know that your gifts are here, known by some, available to all...

And you, young man, remain with us too, insofar as you share yourself with us so richly and so well. Thank you.

A bouquet of summer poesy... that's how @skinnydragon would phrase it :)

Thank you, Tim. Your encouragement means the world to  me. You commented on a line I remember being very fond of when I wrote these. Thanks again!

I read this without and then with the soundtrack. It was good both ways, but in different ways. I like the switch between introspection and extrospection. You knew how to add the right balance. I don't know if I should be happy, sad, or both. This is why I don't read poetry. lol

Wow, so you listened to the 80s Mozart with the electric guitar solo.... Rock on :)

Thank you for your review though, in all seriousness. Your feedback about having different (and/or conflicted) emotions is probably really close to the mark. I was pretty angst-ridden at this time in my life. Thanks again, dear friend.
