Small town romance - 5. Chapter 5

Small town romance

Chapter 5

“So…”

“So, umm…”

“Er…”

Come on, say something! Anything! Anything to make this situation just a little less awkward.

“You, er… You look nice today.”

WHAT?! Are you trying to get your own ass kicked to the moon and back?!

“Thanks. I just threw on whatever clean stuff I could find.”

Oh thank you good God in heaven. The two of us were just standing there in the hallway, staring at each other, each trying to think of something to break the awkward mood. At I wasn’t the only nervous one here. Chris still had his hands in his pockets, shifting from one foot to the other, looking at anything but my eyes. Maybe… maybe he’s so nervous because he likes me too!

Right. As long as we’re fantasizing, how about some diamonds and a pony?

“This is a really nice house you got here.”

Chris finally looked me in the eye as he said this. I smiled at the compliment.

“Thanks. Grandad and I try to keep it nice.”

“Whaddya mean us?!”

Grandad shouted from the lounge.

“Nobody was talking to you!”

“Well, why not? I’m interestin’ aren’t I?”

“As interesting as watching paint dry!”

“Oi! Watchin’ paint dry is very entertainin’! Sometimes it drips! And sometimes it doesn’t!”

“And sometimes, it keeps nosy old farts busy!”

Oh man, we sound like lunatics. I hope Chris doesn’t think we’re like this all the time, even though we are.

“Heeheehee!”

Huh? Chris was hunched over, clutching his stomach and giggling.

“Heheh, I’m sorry, I’m sorry! That was- heehee- that was really funny!”

It was? Well, at least he doesn’t think we’re freaks.

“Um… so anyway, before we were so rudely interrupted-“

I could almost see Grandad flipping me the bird from his armchair in the other room.

“-I was going to suggest that we go play some games in my room. Sound like fun?”

I asked Chris. Wait, games? In my room? That could not have sounded any more perverted if I tried.

“Sure. Sounds like a lot of fun.”

Well at least he didn’t think so. I led him to the staircase and gestured for him to go first. He complied and once again, I was able to ogle that firm teen ass without him noticing as it bounced invitingly in front of me as he ascended the stairs. Yeah I know I sound like a total creep but by now I really don’t care. He’s just so beautiful… so… ah! We’ve reached the top of the stairs. I could feel his eyes on me as I led him into my room.

Oh God!

My room’s a dump!

There are dirty clothes all over the floor, manga and anime magazines covering my desk, not to mention the crappy posters all over my walls. Man this place is a sty! Argh! Why didn’t I clean it up?! I knew he was coming today! Grr…

“Um… S-Sorry about the mess…”

Chris just looked around my room and laughed.

“It’s ok, my room isn’t any better dude, don’t worry about it.”

He gave me a reassuring smile, but I couldn’t help but feel ashamed.

“I-I really should clean up a little, it should only take a few minutes-“

“He said it’s alright ya dope! Stop worryin’.”

What the hell? How did he hear us from all the way downstairs?! Chris giggled again. Ahh… it was such a beautiful sound. I could listen to it all day…

“Nikki? You ok?”

Chris playfully waved a hand in my face. Very close to my face…

“Ah, y-yeah I’m ok.”

We both looked at each other, I could swear I could hear both our heartbeats together in sync. I quickly looked away before I began to blush and exhibit the ‘other’ effects that Chris’s gaze has on my body.

“S-So, um… do you like fighting games?”

Chris gave me a smile that bordered on both dangerous and sexy.

“Why yes… yes I do.”

I smiled back, willing away the boner that had begun to form. I switched on the TV and fired up the PS3. I looked back at Chris, who had already made himself comfortable sitting on my bed.

Wait…

Was he… Was he just looking at my ass?

No way. Keep dreaming Nikita. Who knows? Maybe someday, God will cut you a break.

I put in Tekken and sat next Chris, as close to him as I dared. I smiled at him.

“I hope you’re ready, because I’m pretty good.”

Chris returned the smile.

“Really. Well so am I, heh heh…”

***********************************************************

“No. Fucking. Way…”

“Yes! What does that make it now? 57 times?”

“Wha… how… how?!”

I dropped my controller in shock. We had versed each other 57 times.

Chris won each and every round.

I looked at him, mouth agape as he did his little victory dance.

“How the hell did you get so good?”

Chris sat back down next to me, back facing the window, still laughing.

“My Dad loves this game. He and I would play it each chance we get, ever since I was little.”

I just stared in shock. I thought I was at least ok at it. But Chris was on an entirely different level! No matter which character he played, he always left me soundly defeated. If I wasn’t so stubborn, I’d have given up hours ago. Speaking of time, I glanced out the window, only to find the sun was almost near the horizon.

“Shit, we’ve been playing for hours.”

“What?”

Chris looked out the window as well and laughed.

“Bloody hell, when did that happen?”

I don’t know. Time just seemed to fly by when we were together. Everything seemed to be more significant when I was with Chris. Every moment was beautiful and I swore that I would treasure each and every one of them. Chris was not only physically beautiful. He was wonderful on the inside as well. He was intelligent, compassionate, amusing, everything about him was just… Well…

Perfect.

The golden light of the setting sun made the sky blue walls of my room almost glow in its radiance. The rays of light settled on Chris’s slender but strong frame. The way it shone on him, the way it made his silky blonde hair shimmer like a heavenly halo, the way his crystal clear blue eyes sparkled in the shadow the sun cast on his face. He smiled at me once again.

“Man, time really flew by huh?”

He remarked.

“Yeah… yeah it did.”

This moment… this one moment…

I can’t let it slip away from me.

The inevitable beating would totally be worth it.

I just… I have to do this. If I don’t, I know I’ll go insane with regret. I’ll just do this one thing and I’ll be happy. It would mean jeopardising the only friendship I may ever have but…

As I said…

It will be worth it.

Chris’s smile slowly faded to concern.

“Nikki? Are you ok?”

God, hearing him use that nickname sent shivers down my spine. It’s ok… it’s ok…

I can do this.

Shaking, I took a deep breath and looked Chris in the eye, finally ready.

“Chris. I’m… I’m sorry.”

“Sorry? For what?”

I smiled sadly at him.

“This.”

I grasped his shoulders, leaned forward and with no hesitation, placed my lips on his.

Oh God…

They were so warm, so soft... I swear I could actually FEEL my heart skipping a beat. I gripped his shoulders harder, as if he would drift away if I let go. It was only a few seconds but felt like forever. I hoped, I prayed that this moment, the feeling of Chris’s lips on mine would remain in my memories forever. If God or Buddha or any other deity saw fit to strike me down right now, I would die happy.

After a few seconds which felt like forever, I released his lips. I leaned back, a blush as well as a raging hard-on plaguing me. I couldn’t look him in the eye, for I knew I’d only find contempt and anger in his gaze. I stared at the space on the bed between us.

“Um… S-Sorry…”

I muttered under my breath. He didn’t answer. Well…

This was awkward.

Chapter Comments

A mean cliffhanger. We want to know how Chris reacted. I'm shocked he did it. Shame to risk the possible friendship he finally would have. I'd love to see the chapters a bit longer. The one thing I would note is that sometimes it feels like there is too much of his inner conversation going on. Sometimes it is more extensive than the conversations taking place among the characters and it doesn't work as well for me. I think there are sentiments he makes that are repetitive that you could cut out to make that inner conversation not monopolize the story. Look forward to Chris' reaction!
