The Doorways to the Unknown - 3. The Final Doorway

We come into the world alone and leave it that way. But beyond death is the final doorway.

The Final Doorway

She lies upon the bed like a captured Queen enthroned

There are wires and tubes running all across her regal form

No longer the woman of smiles with knowledge dancing in her eyes

The beeps, whirls, and silences of a hospital are now the norm.

The loving voice that once called my name is silenced

With tubes to breathe and machines that hiss

Each beat of her heart now a precious gift

But knowing soon it will skip and miss

Tears flow and memories flood the confines of the soul

Thoughts of skinned knees, birthdays, vacations, fights, and hugs

She now plays priest to our final love confessions

Before leaving her sons and husband, her three big lugs

She has crossed the final doorway alone

Into the worlds of things unknown.

Dedicated to my mother. Gone but never forgotten.

Chapter Comments

I cried for the second time with this poem. It brought me to the death of my grandpa.

I can't really comment anything else except that this was beautiful and meant a lot to me too.

**sigh** This one really tugged at my heart. It showed how much you love your mother. Thanks for sharing this very personal moment with us.

I think we all have someone we love and don't want to lose. My mother was my confessor, my friend, and the one person who I could always depend on. I think when they leave they take a part of heart with them. Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

Thank you. Sometimes the best things come not from your imagination but from your own life. Glad you found it to be worth the read. Thanks for the kind comments.
