Musings of a Mongoose - 9. The Road to Nowhere

We laughed together on the road to nowhere.

Your smile lit the way, the only road sign I ever needed.

Your eyes on me as much as on the path ahead.

Always making sure I was there.

As if you feared the inevitable point where our paths would diverge,

And you wanted to make sure you froze every moment in your memory.

I wonder how often you knew I was watching too?

When you looked away, and I could only watch on,

Knowing that one day you'd walk away from me.

Fellow traveler, I can still taste you on the wind,

When I close my eyes and dream of the scent of sweet spices,

And exotic places we dared to visit.

The road to nowhere never felt pointless,

As long as you traveled with me.

And now I fear travel, because it never leads me closer to you.

Will you be waiting for me when I round the bend?

The flood gates have opened for your expression to be released. This one hits me deep. I’m the one memorizing and fearing the end. One of my biggest insecurities. Hope you are finding some cathartic release.

I am, actually. This has been a nice month for such things, and I'm sharing them mostly in the hopes that the emotions I'm going through will help others process their own emotional turmoil. That's what poetry has always done for me, anyway. This one was inspired by a song.

Most definitely, poetry is a way to express, or work through our emotions. Like your choice in music. 😉
