Musings of a Mongoose - 22. Fingerprints

A dream left me unsettled last night. It brought me back to someone I loved deeply, and who cared deeply for me, yet it was not something meant to be. I couldn't let it go without putting my thoughts to paper.

On nights I'm most distressed

Sometimes I dream of you

When the wind makes the windowpane shudder

And my pain shudders with it.

Like the tremble of the way you haunt me,

Thoughts of you leave fingerprints upon my soul.

Like the residue of someone once residing there

They’re hard to scrub away

And yet, I don't go seeking for what left them there

I know it's best I keep away

Lest I one day find myself seeking the comfort of your known distance

Instead of this unknown, unfathomable abyss

Which keeps you safely away from me.

I know that you are doing well;

Somehow, that thought comforts me

Even though I know I have nothing at all to do with it.

And that is what matters most

In loving you by letting go

God be with you,

'til we never meet again

It's hard when our dreams open old wounds, but putting thoughts to paper definitely helps sort everything out, at least for me.  I think you've captured the wistfulness of remembering old relationships, even when we know it wasn't meant to be and is probably for the best.  It still hurts when we're reminded of what was or could have been, but it can also be an important part of the healing process and moving on.  Thank you for sharing
