Widderkin Interlude - 2. Chapter 2
Widderkin Interlude.
Chapter 2.
"Kieran?"
The voice was above and, opening his eyes, Kieran wondered why he was sprawled on the deck.
"What happened, Michael? Did I trip over?"
"I don't know. I just snapped out myself and you’re the first one to move. Everyone’s asleep or something."
Alarm grew and an instant check revealed minds all coming awake.
Yes, Ban wondering why Corey's eyes were closed, Rhys taking in the bread and makings of a sandwich on the floor next to him, and Mr B shaking his head in a reflex to wake up.
"Everyone else is snapping out too ... Michael, did the orcas do something to us? The last thing I remember is that weird singing."
Michael looked shocked and entered into his unique communication mode for a few seconds.
"Pod Momma says they were singing for protection. They sensed the first wave and came racing to be with us."
"Protection? Against what?"
"I’ll have to ask."
Gwen and Nathan were shaking the PM, with Arthur and Samuel hovering close. Rhys and Tan were on their way from the galley and Corey and Ban were watching.
"I can't translate exactly but it’s something like ‘the calling’, and whales and dolphins know an ancient song connected with it."
A niggle of thought about Michael's explanation turned to realisation.
"You said first wave, Michael. Does that mean it might happen again?"
There was another blip for orca communication.
"Pod Momma expects three calls, each one stronger before they stop."
"Expects?"
"Yes. That’s why they’re not moving. Time’s not the same for them but it’s soon."
Every face was turned toward them, watching the earnest conversation with varying degrees of understanding and expectation.
Kieran grabbed Michael's arm for a hurry on.
"What happened, Kieran? Is the PM in any danger?"
"Sit down, Arthur. Everyone sit down."
The command voice made that instant, along with total attention.
"We can't explain what made us blank out, because we don't know. We’re all going to stay seated because we have reason to believe it’s going to happen again and probably soon.
John, ask your question. I suspect it’s pertinent and helpful."
"Kieran, so many questions are thundering through my mind I don't know which one to use."
"You glanced at the orcas."
"I see, well not really, but was it the orcas? The sound they made was very unsettling and I glanced because they’re all here watching like sentinels or something."
A muttered exclamation turned everyone to Michael.
"Quick, sit down. It’s coming again."
Corey and Ban sat instantly. Everyone else was slower, even Rhys, and Kieran, realising they were looking for his lead motioned his intent and dropped on the spot.
The shrill of orca song sounded again, louder and louder.
Kieran's mind boggled at the message of purpose and effort ... And opened his eyes to the weird sight of sprawled and motionless bodies, except for Michael who was coming to his feet.
Kieran reached, but had to wait till the orca communication ended.
"Wake everyone, Kieran. Quick as you can.
Kieran. We have to be in the water, close to the orcas."
"What?"
"The song’s a water song. Pod Momma says it’s the only way to protect us."
"The water?"
"Do it!"
Conviction and authority galvanised Kieran and his wake up command lifted every groggy head.
"Listen to Michael.
No questions! Listen and do!"
"We have to leave the boat. The evacuation routine we practised yesterday starts now.
Tan, help Nathan with Rom’s safety jacket.
Grab your day-packs, and Arthur and Samuel bring your service packs as well.
Rhys, help everyone into the water from the pontoon while I get the epirb.
If the orcas start their song, jump, or get in the water however you can. Go!"
Kieran overrode every response and reaction with imposed compliance, raced to collect his allotment of safety jackets, then grabbed his day pack on the way to the pontoon platform.
Corey, Ban and Mr B were already in the water. Gwen and John, with Arthur just behind, were descending the access steps, while Nathan, Rom, Tan and Samuel readied themselves to follow. As soon as each jacket was fastened the wearer made the single step-jump and, responding to Corey's beckoning, moved to clear the way.
What was wrong?
"Jump, Nathan. Rom will follow."
That happened, Tan and Arthur followed, and seeing Michael finally arrive, Kieran made his own step-jump. Pod Momma’s distinctive fin was close and, following Michael's punch point, everyone moved toward her.
A wide-eyed Rhys forged his way close.
"Holy hell, Kieran. That was dramatic. Wouldn't we be safer on the boat?"
"Michael's orders, Rhys. I didn't have any choice."
Rhys's eyes widened even more then jerked to Michael's call.
"Well done, everyone. Turn to whoever is near you and do the jacket check. When you’ve passed each other, move close to Pod Momma and stay there."
"This is insane."
"Steady, Samuel. Twice we’ve lost consciousness and Kieran clearly believes Michael has some sort of insight or understanding. We’ll ask our questions when it’s time. Till then, stay with Nathan."
Kieran saw a new aspect of the PM's personality but there was no time for reflection.
"Here it comes. Safety check whoever’s near as soon as you wake up."
Orca singing, stronger by far this time, pushed any thought from Kieran's mind.
***
A whack on his arm jolted Kieran from a weird water dream to awareness that it was real.
"Kieran, wake up! The orcas are lost and you’ll probably have to steady everyone."
Lost? Steady?
Kieran fought the fog of his mind and looked past Michael to where Nathan and Rom were floating, supported by Pod Momma.
Rhys, where was Rhys?
He must have called aloud.
"Rhys is all right. The orcas watched and everyone’s safe, but look around, Kieran. Samuel might be right when he says this is insane."
Kieran looked and fought the fog again, then wondered if he was losing the fight. Yes, the people were okay, some supported by orcas, some floating, and a few now awake and moving this way. But where was the boat ... Where was the island? The one he could see in the far distance was the wrong shape and way too big.
Rhys was indeed all right. Close by and looking around as if dazed.
A yell and a grin ended that and a few strokes closed the distance.
"Where have you portalled us this time? Are we safe?"
"It wasn't me –"
Kieran was too shocked to say more. The damned fog was making it hard to mind speak.
"It wasn't me and I haven't got a clue."
Rhys looked startled and then worried.
"Are you okay?"
Kieran snapped out of his inner turmoil and finally returned Rhys's greeting grin.
"Sort of. Stay close, Rhys, while we try and figure what’s happened."
Corey and Mr B approached and Kieran couldn't help smiling at their double-barrelled assessment.
"Got any good ideas, Corey? This is a total schemozzle."
"Let’s call it a puzzle and put our minds to finding answers. Kieran, get everyone calm and focused on you. The guests must be totally bewildered and that will get worse when they see the anomalies."
Mr B interrupted.
"Make an orca platform like when we helped Norkus. It’ll be hard to keep focused while we’re floundering in the water."
Kieran reached, annoyed at the persistent fog, but seeing the confusion, decided this was a job for Michael.
"Calm them, Michael, and ask three or four of the big orcas to help us."
Michael's features set in concentration and the big male, followed by one other, moved next to Pod Momma. They edged close till they were aligned and touching.
Rom yipped an excited welcome at this new development.
Mr B caught everyone's attention and pointed to the living raft.
"You’re first, Gwen. Tan will help you out of the water. Then John, and the rest of us will follow."
Gwen set off with definite purpose, and with no hint of hesitation took Tan's hand and clambered next to Nathan.
Kieran indicated Corey.
"Corey’s our ideas man and we’re going to listen to him before we do anything else."
"Thank you, Kieran.
We need as much information as possible.
Arthur, I doubt you’ll even get a signal, but check the GPS function of your sat-phone to see if it gives our location.
Have a look at your watches. Mine’s working and only shows six minutes since I last checked."
Arthur was now frowning at his sat-phone. Tan, Samuel and the PM all had almost identical times.
Corey nodded as he took this in.
"Samuel's watch is on 24 hour time so unless we were out of it for a full 24 hours, our blank out was very short.
Look what we have. The boat’s gone. The island’s gone, and the ocean temperature is significantly different.
Our location has changed ... You’re shaking your head, Samuel?"
"It’s not possible. None of this is."
"It’s hard to accept.
Arthur, any luck with your sat-phone?"
"Nothing! Everything’s working. The battery’s at 89% but there’s no signal registering at all. How did you know?"
"There aren’t any satellites."
"This is a government contract phone, Corey, linked to three separate systems with scores of satellites. Are you saying something’s blocking every signal?"
"Not exactly. I’m saying we’ve moved to a place where there are no satellites."
Samuel was shaking his head again.
"Kieran, we’re all caught in this and anything but full and open explanation is unfair."
Taking assent as a given, Corey turned to the PM.
"John, this will be a challenge, but watch and listen while we explain ourselves. Some of us have unusual abilities.
Michael can communicate with the orcas. You might have heard Kieran tell him to ask the orcas to make this living raft we’re on.
Michael, tell Norkus to leap out of the water then swim in a tight circle."
The PM turned to Gwen with a nod.
"I did hear Kieran, and it was one of my many questions.
Corey, you’re saying Michael controls this whole pod?"
"Is it control or is it voluntary, Michael?"
"I’m not sure. They love doing things for me but I don't think I could make them if they didn't want to. It’s different to Kieran's instant control."
Norkus leapt high and stopped the conversation while the surface churned with his circling.
The PM, wonder writ large, turned his attention to Kieran.
"I am finding this hard to take in. I’ve heard of orcas being trained in marine parks but these are wild, and now Michael is saying you can do the same sort of thing?"
"Yes, John. I can do any number of things and that’s one of them."
"Demonstrate, Kieran, with Rom first."
"Okay ... He’s going to bark three times."
Ruff! Ruff! Ruff!
The PM's jaw dropped.
"I’m siding with Samuel. You did that?"
"Yes. Give me some ideas.
– Lift his left paw.
– Move to Tan's lap.
– Pat his right paw on Tan's shoulder.
Seeing his suggestions enacted raised a much bigger question for the PM.
"You don't speak or give hand signals?"
Corey interrupted.
"It’s a silent form of communication, John, but I’ve just had a worrying thought.
Kieran, someone or something has enough power to do this, and they may or may not be friendly. Everyone should be shielded, including the orcas."
All the current shields were in place and adding nineteen orca and four human mind shields was quickly finished. The shock for Kieran came when he tried to add sustaining energy pools.
The Opal didn't respond.
Everything external went by the way while he checked and examined what he could.
The all important personal connection was unchanged.
The Nexus flow to WidderRealm was uninterrupted.
The sparkle of his Mind Net was undiminished, but a yell to Maurice went nowhere.
White Power. That was a different type of calling ... Nothing.
What? His arm was being shaken and a mixed mind and voice call broke his concentration.
"Kieran! Say something. I know you’re in Buddha mode, but it’s so strong it’s spooky."
Kieran took in the silent stares and quickly nodded.
"Sorry everyone. Sometimes I have to think so hard I look like I’ve blanked out. This was a big one and I don't know what it means.
John, this will sound like gobbledygook, but my Opal helps me do difficult things when I need extra energy, and it’s not working properly.
"Like crystal power helping with meditation?"
"Other things! …
Where’s Nathan?"
Every head turned ... And watched a giant penguin pat Rom’s back with one of its flippers.
Rhys's laugh sounded and Tan, right next to the penguin, gave Gwen and John a big smile.
"Why are you all staring?"
"Your mum and dad thought you were a penguin, Nathan."
"No, we didn't. We figured we were hypnotised."
Corey, clearly thinking a penguin seeming, smiles and talk of hypnotism of little consequence, made a quietening motion.
"Explain, Kieran. After you, the Opal is our single greatest asset."
"I can't call power. When I try nothing happens."
"Have you been separated?"
"No, I can tell that everything’s working. I just can't make access."
Nathan gave Rom a stay order and moved carefully from Pod Momma and came close.
"It might be the green stuff. It’s everywhere."
Corey stared at Nathan, well everyone did, then turned to his parents.
"Nathan has one of the abilities we were working our way through, Gwen, and we need to hear what he has to say.
Tell us what you’re seeing, Nathan."
Nathan gave a kind of don't worry look to his folks before proceeding.
"I don't know if it’s really green but that’s what it feels like. It’s a faint mist around everyone and it got brighter round Kieran when he was thinking."
"Nathan has a unique ability to see alternative forms of energy.
Kieran, can you make one of your blue globes?"
A soft blue glow hovered in front of Kieran then drifted to Nathan's open palm.
"Good, now, call on your Opal to strengthen it while Nathan watches with his Power Eyes."
Kieran concentrated. The globe didn't change but Nathan nodded vigorously.
"The green got brighter and kind of thicker."
"We’re getting somewhere, Kieran. You used your inherent power with no apparent effort or hindrance."
"That’s not much use. It's tiny compared to the amount we’d need for anything serious."
"Maybe not. Let’s see if you can access power you’ve previously called."
He unzipped the top of his life jacket and brought his Ruby into view.
"Big moment, Kieran. Can you use it?"
The watchers winced till the sudden brightness faded.
"Sorry! I rush things sometimes. It came like a normal call, Corey."
"That leaves the question of why your Opal is the only compromised gemstone, but it does mean that we have massive resources available.
Now put some of that energy into your Opal and test if you can still access."
The globe increased in size, then along with Kieran's relieved nod, shrank.
Corey wasn't finished.
"Rhys, Gwen and John and Arthur and Samuel have been overloaded with input. Give them one of your boosts before we start moving."
"Move? How are we meant to do that?"
"In style, Samuel. In style. Look at Michael's big smile."
"We’ve got eleven people and a clever dog, Samuel. Nineteen orcas will carry us easily. Are we heading straight for the big island, Kieran?"
"What do you mean?"
"There are three others, much smaller. It might be a good idea to investigate the closest one first."
Everyone craned their head to check.
"What do the orcas think, Michael? They’re doing the carrying."
After a moment Michael pointed.
"They want to go that way. It’s not direct but they’ve sensed activity of some kind and they’re keen to explore.
Nathan, you and Rom go with Pod Momma's son. He’s the biggest orca and Rom can't hang onto a dorsal fin like the rest of us.
Kieran, you’re with the other big male, and I’ll stay with Pod Momma."
The mini armada, as Rhys later described it, headed off slowly, with Michael monitoring how each orca and rider were adapting to this unusual mode of travel. Gradually the speed increased and then steadied. Kieran thought it might be ten or twelve km/h but it was hard to estimate.
Pod Momma moved close enough for Michael to speak.
"Keeping the top of their backs out of the water slows them down, Kieran."
"Does that annoy them?"
"Are you kidding? It’s like a new game and you know how much they like games.
Arthur and Samuel have been quiet."
"That’s John's influence. They’re following his lead and waiting till they know more."
"Getting Corey to take over was a good idea."
"It was brilliant, but it was his idea, not mine.
He was giving me the chance to collect my wits, Michael. It was such a shock when I couldn't call power I couldn't think of anything except the Opal."
"Rhys told us you were thinking, but then it took him three tries to get your attention."
"Well, Corey got us on track again.
Michael, ask Corey’s orca to pair up with John’s so they can talk while we’re travelling. The more he knows the better. Arthur and Samuel are watching like hawks and he’s the key to keeping them steady."
Michael laughed.
"What?"
"Not that. John and Corey will be close enough to talk soon. I’m laughing at Rom. He’s so surefooted he’s doing this easier than any of us."
Kieran smiled as he watched Rom alternate between a lookout position at the front of the massive back and squatting where Nathan could rest a hand on his head.
"What do the orcas think of Rom, Michael?"
"They see how much we like him so that means he’s part of our pod."
"We’re a pod?"
"Of course we are, Kieran. That's the way they think ... And they’re right too.
They’ve got a family pod and we’ve got a friendship pod. They’re very clever, Kieran. They understand more than I ever could have imagined."
"You know the way they think?"
"Kind of. It’s complicated."
A brainstorm of new insight whirled through Kieran's thoughts.
"Ranevargar has to hear this. I think you might be merging with the orcas something like the way he and I merge."
"Merge? It could be, I suppose, but there’s no effort, Kieran. Rhys told me you need recovery time because it’s so hard."
"That’s when Ranevargar’s in the Realms and I’m not."
"It wasn't an effort when I was in the Realms."
"That is different, and your connection seems to be permanent too. Michael, do they know how you’re feeling, or do you have to tell them."
"I haven't thought about that – yes, it’s automatic both ways."
"Okay, this is a big ask but how would you feel about trying a mind merge with me?"
"No problems, but why is it a big ask?"
"You’d be trusting me with total control. I wouldn't just be looking at your thoughts and actions I would be experiencing them as if they were my own. It's also big because so far I’ve only merged with Ranevargar. He’s been pushing me about it and I was going to practice with Maurice next time I was in the Realms."
"Hang on. The orcas just went on alert. We’re getting near that activity and the closer ones are passing warning signals. - God's! They’re going into an attack/protection formation. Pass the message to everyone that we’ll be dumped together with a group circling to protect us while the rest do whatever they need to do."
Protection. Kieran wondered briefly what could possibly threaten a group of creatures who could dispatch a great white shark with relative ease. Action was required though. The message was passed on and within thirty seconds the orca steeds had closed on Pod Momma and submerged beneath their stunned riders.
Kieran ignored the calls, reached to see through orca eyes and reeled with shock at Pod Momma’s view of her son being savaged by five giant shark like creatures.
With a desperate body twist his powerful jaws closed again and again with a bite-wrench combination, then discarded the mangled carcass to twist again.
Crunch!
Fellow orcas arrived and with unerring precision four sets of orca teeth exercised the same predatory bite-wrench skill.
One of the creatures, quivering in the throes of its death, snapped Kieran from observation to action.
Learn the pattern. Learn the pattern.
Was Pod Momma’s view enough? Not quite. Leaving Pod Momma he reached, and using image and location, tried to focus.
Resistance? The fog again. Almost instinctively, Kieran called on his newly stored power and pushed. Yes!
The creature died but there was enough pattern for recognition purposes, and Kieran checked. The immediate vicinity was clear but, beyond about a hundred m, the fog built too much. Power boost! Oh no! This would need to go through Michael. Where was he? – five m away and yelling at everyone that the danger was over. Why was he looking so stressed then?
"Steady, Michael. We’re safe for now."
"He’s got awful bites, Kieran. He’s bleeding and we don't like it."
"Bring him close. Rhys will heal him."
Michael steadied.
"Sorry, Kieran. It's like it happened to me. I’ll tell them he’ll need a support platform like we had for Norkus."
"Make it a big one. I want everyone out of the water so they feel secure, and I want them watching Rhys's healing ability."
Kieran gave his attention to everyone else. Apart from Rom’s blithe acceptance of another swim with his master, a mix of worry, concern and raging helplessness hit like a storm.
"Help each other out of the water when the platform’s ready. The big orca’s been hurt and we’re going to heal him.
Arthur and Samuel, you’re stronger than the rest of us and I want you next to me and Rhys and ready to do whatever we ask.
John, the immediate danger’s over but speed is a priority and I’ll explain what happened as the situation allows."
"What did happen, Kieran? Michael went white as a ghost and the orcas went into a frenzy."
The platform was in position and everyone paddling to where Michael was ready to help.
"Quick! We need to be first out of the water, Rhys. Five things attacked. I was so busy I didn't think to relay anything. Here’s a quick look before you start healing."
"Holy hell!"
Talk stopped while Kieran pushed past the light fog, calmed the big orca, and took control of his body.
"Arthur, we need to hold these flaps of flesh in place as best we can. Rhys does the healing but I’ll direct where it’s actually happening. You too, Samuel. Respond as quickly as you can."
"Healing? You’ll need cord or fishing line. There’s some in my service pack if you’ve got something strong enough to make stitches."
"Watch!"
"Ready, Kieran? I don't want to flake out."
"You won't. This looks awful but it’s baby stuff compared to the deep tissue wounds you fixed for Krol."
"That big flap with the blood seep, Arthur. Use both hands to close as many gaps as you can. Samuel, help with that section if Arthur can't manage. Yes, that’s good."
"We just hold it?"
"Watch!"
They did that for just ten seconds.
"What the hell! Kieran, this flesh feels like it's going to cook."
"That’s good, Arthur. See how the wounds are knitting?"
"I don't believe this!"
It was clearly an exclamation rather than a comment.
"It’s neat isn't it. Move your hands to that next flap – careful! If you dislodge Rhys's touch the healing stops."
Arthur moved, this time with greater confidence and precision.
"Are you seeing this, John? It’s quite wonderful."
"I am, Arthur. I am. And I must say I’m feeling a degree of envy."
"Can you give Gwen and John a turn, Kieran? Personal involvement would bolster their sense of inclusion."
"Good thinking, Corey."
"No problem, John. We’ll finish these biggest wounds then you can take their place. You’ll need Gwen or Nathan with you."
"Mum did a first aid course last year and she’s never used it."
Rhys twisted his head enough to look at Nathan.
"That means it should be you."
"Why? – I’m monitoring the power flow."
"She’s already got experience and you haven't."
"Experience? Yep! Putting a Band-Aid on my finger."
While the healing proceeded Kieran brought Michael up to date.
"We’ll be finished soon, Michael. It looked awful but the thick layer of blubber’s like a barrier. I’ve blocked his nerve endings, like an anaesthetic, and he’s as calm as anything."
"He went ahead of the others because he’s so big and strong. The pod’s learned how these things act now, and if there are any more they’ll be ready."
"They’re everywhere, Michael. One of them lived long enough for me to get their pattern and I did a check. I had to use power to push through the fog stuff and there are two groups between here and the island."
"Two? How big are the groups? Do you know?"
"One group has six and the other nine, but now that I’ve got their pattern I should be able to control them."
"Should? I’ve never heard you say that."
"That’s because it’s always been easy. The fog seems to inhibit what I can do."
"How far are they? The orcas aren't hearing anything, except zillions of fish."
Zillions of fish? That was interesting, but a discussion for later.
"About 1500 m, I think."
"That makes sense. It depends on the loudness and type of sound, but the orca’s range is about 800 m – what’s with Gwen? She’s looking at Rhys in a funny way."
"This is how Rom got better when the vets didn't think it was possible?"
Rhys gave a happy nod.
"Don't ask me how. Gwen. I just do it."
"Yes, Gwen. We like to keep it to ourselves but when Tan makes a command decision we follow."
"Tan gives commands? Kieran, I can't keep up. Every time I think I’ve worked out where everyone stands something new gets tossed at me.
Just today we’ve seen Michael take charge with total confidence, Corey guide us through a situation assessment with extraordinary perception, Rhys’s affable exterior hides not only a rare strength of character, but an ability that is hard to comprehend.
Now you’re saying that gentle, sensitive, Tan, who has touched our hearts with his kindness and care, has an aspect of unquestionable command?"
Kieran didn't say anything because Woorawa did.
"You have no idea, John. We’ve seen people with authority and power turn to lambs when he’s questioned them."
"Who are you people?"
Kieran repressed a smile as this incredulous exclamation was directed at him yet again.
"We’re still trying to work that out ourselves, John. We’ll explain more, but right now we need to keep moving.
The orcas will support us overnight if we need it, but I want to reach that island while it’s still light."
"The island’s close, Kieran. Is there something that might hold us up?"
"At least two more attacks to manage, Corey, and if there are reefs or cliffs, getting ashore might be tricky in itself."
"Manage? Are you downplaying the danger, Kieran?"
"Not really, Arthur. The pod won't allow the mistake of one against many again, and I’ve learnt things that could help."
"One against many? What happens if the many is overwhelming?"
"Pod Momma's son took on five and, while he was killing one, the other four did the damage we saw."
"You know the numbers, Kieran? It was all underwater."
"Yes, John. It is one of the things I can usually do. The next groups, if they attack, are groups of six and nine."
"Do you have any idea what these things look like, Kieran? My imagination is running wild."
"Show everyone, Kieran. I share Gwen's apprehension to a degree, and giving form to a danger is a step towards coping with it."
Kieran nodded.
"Corey just advised me that giving you a real image is better than letting your imagination run wild.
It’s very savage, but keep in mind that Pod Momma’s son is nearly three times as long and can kill with only one or two bites."
"A real image?"
"Yes, John. It’s something like when you saw Nathan as a giant penguin."
"I still don't understand. Where does the image come from?"
"I watched through Pod Momma’s eyes."
"Good God!"
This reaction was to both the idea and the drama now playing in his mind.
"Enough, Kieran!"
"Corey wants our attention."
"Yes, Kieran. We do need to move on but while we’re together we should have something to eat and drink. As I remember, everyone has a food parcel except Tan and Rhys. Be sparing with how much you drink too, in case that becomes a problem."
***
The expedition came to a virtual standstill.
"Four hundred meters, Michael. Hold the orcas while I take control of these things."
With all his experience and practice the distance would normally have been inconsequential. The fog stuff changed everything though, and without assistance Kieran's reach was limited. Ruby Power fixed that and Kieran located and latched on to the six creatures, only to realise each one had a rudimentary protective shield. Another power boost fixed that as well, and in short order six potential attackers were fleeing the scene.
"It’s all good, Michael. They’re under control and moving away to the left. Get the orcas to veer right while I keep watch."
Michael gave a kind of victory wave for everyone's benefit and the expedition was underway again.
"What’s the keep watch for, Kieran? Do you mean for the second group?"
"The fog stuff messes with my control, Rhys, and the more distance the harder it gets."
"Does that matter? There’s tons of power in our rubies."
"I suppose, but when they’re far enough away I’m going to leave them so I don't waste."
"I can't see this fog stuff. Is it everywhere?"
"I can't see it either, but it’s weird because it sort of feels like I should be able to."
"Nathan sees it. He won't mind if you look through his eyes."
"Yep, but that’s one of the weird things. I’m good at seeing different kinds of power. Ranevargar and Corey both pushed me to practise after that Nexus workshop with my father."
"Are there any Nexus patterns here?"
"That's one of the very first things I looked for. It’s just like my Opal. I can tell they’re here but I’m blocked from access."
"Sheba! If someone’s doing this, like Corey said, they must be pretty cluey ... Ban might know something. Talk to him."
"Good thinking."
Rhys checked the sky.
"We’ll reach the island with hours of daylight, Kieran, now that we won't need to stop for attacks or healing. Nine thingies won't be a problem will they?"
"Hang on! I’ll get them moving now and the orcas won't even have to slow down."
***
"Look at all that driftwood. Will we start a fire now or wait till later?"
Landing had been tricky till the orcas found a rock platform jutting into deeper water and one by one the passengers managed to jump into the water and clamber ashore.
"Later, Tan. We’ll figure where to set up some kind of rough shelter and have a look around first.
Everyone can help with that, while Woorawa and I go exploring."
Nathan gave a querying look.
"Can I come with you? It would be good for Rom to have a walk."
Kieran got an okay nod from Gwen and John then asked Michael for the binoculars he’d packed for the bird rookery.
"What exactly are you looking for with the shelter, Kieran?"
"Whatever you can manage, John. Enough of those longer driftwood pieces could even give us some protection if it rains."
Arthur pointed at Samuel.
"The space blankets in our service packs. We’ll actually get to use them."
***
"What are you thinking, Kieran?"
"We’ll tell everyone else what we’ve seen and make a final decision tomorrow night."
"Tomorrow night?"
"Yes! I don't know enough about this fog stuff and there are a whole range of things I want to try with Corey, Ban and Michael, and especially Nathan."
"Me?"
"Yes, Nathan. You’ve just discovered a green, glowing island that looks just like all the other islands to Woorawa and me."
"Except for the little one that’s just a rock they all have a bit of glow, just not as strong."
"That might mean the glow is associated with vegetation, Kieran."
"Animals too, Woorawa. All the shark things have it. We’d better get back."
Woorawa picked up his carry pack and turned for a final look.
"Hang on! Give me the binocs, Kieran. It looks like mist or something near Green Island and it wasn't there before. - Wow! It’s birds. Look how many."
Kieran and Nathan took turns before handing the binoculars back to Woorawa.
"Can you reach them, Kieran?"
"Only after I’ve got their pattern. They’re specks of dust without the binoculars."
"That means we’ll have to go there. – Can you see any glow with them, Nathan?"
"I can't tell. The island glow is too strong."
Woorawa gave Kieran a funny look.
"What?"
"It’s happening again, Kieran. Another situation where stuff happens that we don't understand."
Kieran agreed.
"That’s for sure!
I’ve been searching through the things Maurice and Ranevargar have taught me and I can't find anything about invisible glows."
"What about the High Castle Wards? They’re invisible without the purple your father gives them."
"Hey, they are too – except I’ve always been able to see them. The purple’s just an extra."
"Are wards a kind of barrier? They are in some of my books."
"That’s exactly what they are, Nathan, barriers against physical entry and power attacks."
"Maurice’s barrier against the pests was a kind of mind ward too, Kieran. We were lucky we got through that."
Kieran shook his head for Nathan's benefit.
"Woorawa’s being modest, Nathan. Luck had nothing to do with it. He sang his way through with one of his chants."
"Wow! Can you tell me about it, or is it more special Realm stuff."
"Special? What gives you that idea? We’re not keeping anything from you. If it seems like that, it’s because so many things have happened we just haven't got around to telling you about them all."
"Okay! And what about Mum and Dad, and Arthur and Samuel? Can they know everything too, or are there things you want to keep to yourself?"
"They’re caught in what’s happening the same as the rest of us, Nathan, and Corey says the more they understand the more they’ll feel like they belong."
"What about Arthur and Samuel when we get home? I think you can trust them."
"I could make them forget everything if I had to, but I trust them too. Your dad thinks the world of both of them and he’s a terrific judge of character."
"I’m worried about Rom. His water bottle’s empty and I haven't got much left in mine."
Kieran had a double take at the unexpected change of subject, and reacting to the expectant look the use of his name brought, ruffed Rom’s neck.
"Mr B’s got some ideas about that. Let’s get back and see what everyone’s up to."
***
"Wow, John! That’s impressive. We’ll have to cuddle up to fit in, but that foliage will help us keep warm if it turns cold."
The Prime Minister laughed.
"The space blankets are courtesy of Arthur and Samuel and the leaves are Rhys's idea. Gwen and I just helped collect them – was the scouting expedition helpful?"
"We could see islands everywhere, but there’s one big one that looks very interesting. The trouble is that it’s got an extra strong glow of Nathan’s green fog, so before we go there we’re going to have one of Mr B's decision councils."
Mr B shook his head at the looks coming his way.
"They’re not really mine, John. It’s a habit they got into after I said we needed a council of war to think about something. We’ve discovered that discussing a problem seriously brings a clash of ideas that often leads to something unexpected.
Kieran, we need a fire for our food and drink. Arthur and Samuel have matches in their service packs but we should save them."
"For sure, but that means you’ve worked out a way to get drinking water?"
"Boiling the seawater’s easy. Collecting the steam’s tricky but we’ve come up with a couple of ways to do that.
Michael’s collecting fish from Norkus and Pod Momma’s son, and we’ll start cooking when we’ve got a nice bed of coals."
"They’re catching fish for us? Neat!"
"It’s mostly Norkus, Nathan, because after the healing, Pod Momma’s son stuffed himself with fish and needed some rest time."
"Where are the rest of the pod?"
"Exploring. Michael says it’s a natural imperative for them and, without us to slow them down, they’re mapping the whole area."
"Mapping? What does that mean?"
"Ask Michael. It’s something about the way their brains work. Start the fire first."
Watched by the keen gaze of John and Arthur, Kieran did just that.
Arthur gasped in amazement when the mix of little kindling flared with smoke and then flame.
"Just like that! One look and there’s fire?"
"I’ve done it so much I hardly even think about it."
"And the energy comes from your Opal?"
Kieran had to think.
"A bit. I don't really need it but the Opal makes it easier."
Kieran built a teepee shape of slightly longer kindling and John and Arthur watched the little flame catch and grow.
"You make that look so easy."
"We had lots of practice for a while last year, and it was the only way to cook our food."
"Really? Couldn't you have just heated it with your energy?"
Kieran stared at Arthur then laughed.
"You’re right, but it never entered our minds. A campfire’s one of our patterns for Tan’s cooking and our special time with Woorawa. Can you keep building the fire for a while? I want to catch up with Michael and find out what’s going on with the rest of the orcas."
John gave Arthur a questioning look.
"Can you tend the fire, Arthur? I don't like feeling ignorant, and staying close to Kieran helps."
Rhys and the others had shown Woorawa and Nathan the shelter set up, and under Woorawa’s orders were collecting a whole stack more foliage.
Michael was out on the rock platform with Corey and Ban.
"Samuel was out of his depth for a while, John, then your manner steadied him."
"Well, Corey and the rest of you steadied me, and that helped both Arthur and Samuel. Gwen takes everything in her stride, and Nathan’s acting like it’s all a great adventure.
Kieran, what does this Power Eye thing mean for him? He’s always been complicated, and this new factor just extends that."
"We really don't know anything about Nathan's Power Eyes, John. My mentor, who knows a great deal about power related things, says it’s something new. When he watched Nathan he was very impressed with him."
"He was? – I’m lost again. Who are we talking about?"
"He was with me in Parliament, ready to help with the outcome if there was anything sneaky going on."
"One of the elders?"
"No. Ranevargar is a ruler from the Realms and he was watching through my eyes."
"Something like the way you watch through the orca's eyes?"
"Yes, but way more complicated than that."
"Good grief. And he’s a ruler?"
"There are six of us. His Realm is like a sanctuary for living things."
"Us? You rule one of these Realms too?"
"I do. It only happened last year so I’m practically clueless."
"Why do you live in Melbourne and present as a college student then?"
"That's complicated, John, and I’ll explain whenever there’s an opportunity. Right now we need to help Michael.
I’m not concerned about Nathan's state of mind. His friendship with Tan has brought him out of himself – look, Norkus has a fish in his mouth."
They arrived just as a flick of Norkus’ head sent his food gift ashore.
"Will four be enough, Kieran? They’re pretty big."
"Tell Norkus to chase a few close and when I’ve fixed their pattern we’ll get two more. It’s been a big day and everyone will be hungry. Are the rest of the orcas okay, Michael? Rhys said they’re exploring and those shark things are everywhere."
"The shark things haven't got a hope. The orcas think they’re delicious and they’ve practised their hunting strategy with four groups so far."
"Practised? Did any of them get bitten?"
"Not even close. The shark things are so stupid they’re easy prey."
Michael pointed.
"Here comes Norkus."
A glimpse of the racing fish in the crystal clear water was enough to established a distinct pattern in Kieran’s mind and frantic motion slowed.
Two silvery shapes separated and pushed their way into the natural gutter at Kieran's feet.
"I don't like this bit, but without it we go hungry."
The fish were quickly dispatched and the group made their way back to the fire which was now burning strongly. Tan's trusty pocketknife had sharpened a number of skewer sticks and everyone watched him prepare the first fish.
"Have a go at the next one, Nathan. You can be my cooking apprentice."
"Yuck! It’s dead but it's eyes keep looking at me."
"Forget what it looks like and hope it tastes all right – what about Rom? Will he like it raw or cooked?"
"He’ll eat anything. – What do you think, Mum?"
"Cook it. He’ll think it’s a real treat if he eats the same food we do."
Rhys grabbed one of the fish, wriggled it in front of Rom, then yelled in surprise when, with one snap, it was taken and shaken.
"Holy hell! He was too quick"
"You’re a twit, Rhys. You made it look alive and he thought you wanted it killed."
The sight of Rom, sitting on his haunches with the twice killed fish dangling from his mouth, and clearly expecting praise for a job well done, was quite a moment.
Nathan dived to the rescue.
"Good boy. Give it to me, Rom. We’re going to cook it for you. Give it to me."
After one more shake, Rom did just that.
"Wow! How many commands does he know, Nathan?"
"You’ve seen most of them, Rhys. You know how much he loves sticks and balls, but when he was little he’d bring them back and then not let go. I think ‘give it to me’ was probably his first command ever."
Gwen nodded.
"Nathan taught him to sit and heel at about the same time, because a Prime Minister's dog has to be well-behaved, and that’s when we thought he was more intelligent than most dogs. Look at him. He knows we’re talking about him. Skewer that fish and cook it the way Tan tells you, Nathan, then you and Rom can share it."
This process prompted a few more yuks and a bit of a wait till a section of the fire was glowing coals, but then Nathan's tentative first taste brought a look of surprise and approval.
***
"Okay, everyone, with all the explanations and repeat demonstrations our regular practice has taken almost triple the normal time, but you now have a basic idea of the skills and abilities we share between us.
Before Kieran explains why he wants to delay our departure, we’re keen to hear any thoughts, impressions or assessments you might have.
Gwen, can we start with you?"
Gwen looked surprised.
"There’s so much, Corey. I’m still taking everything in, but I am struggling to see the difference between the things you describe as power and natural strength of mind."
"I’m not sure what you mean."
"I’m not exactly sure either. Nathan can see the power but he doesn't do anything with it. Kieran's Medusa look and everyone's reaction to it seems like an ability also without needing power. When Kieran tried it with us, Samuel and I had way more resistance than John and Arthur, and unless we access it unwittingly, neither of us use power to help us."
Corey turned straight to Bantellar.
"How do you understand this, Ban?"
"Gwen has clearly seen the difference between power and ability. We all have many abilities and in my Realm we believe that with training, almost everyone can learn to manipulate power of some kind as well.
Many abilities, such as Nathan's special perception and Woorawa’s spirit of dance, don't require any use of Nexus power.
Some abilities don’t need power at a basic level but, like Kieran's mind speech, can be boosted by it. This topic is extensive and never ending, Corey."
"It certainly is, but you’ve already given me something to think about.
Arthur, do you have any particular observations to share?"
"I'm out of my depth really, but from a security point of view I can't help seeing how much our whole situation relies on Kieran's well-being."
The nods of general agreement stopped when Corey held up a cautioning hand.
"I don't disagree, but keep in mind that the skills and resources we have between us are far-reaching and unique. As a team we would handle any normal situation. We can call on youth, wisdom, technique and initiative for whatever confronts us.
"John, do you have any words of wisdom?"
"I wouldn't call them wise, Corey, but it seems to me that our fundamental problem is the green fog which spoils Kieran's special abilities. I have no idea how to tackle it, but barring another action of the agency or whatever it is, we’re stuck in this place till Kieran regains access to his Opal and his Nexus system."
"If we’re stuck here, Prime Minister, the establishment will go into meltdown when it finds out that you and your family have vanished."
"There should be a few days grace, Arthur. We’re on three days of private family time and Rory will most likely use that as a cover while a search takes place. He’ll be frantic with worry though."
"Could you reach Rory the way you reached Tan and Woorawa’s families when we were taken to the Realms?"
"I doubt it, Mr B. But we’ll definitely have a try when I’ve had a good think about it."
"Reach? With your mind talk?"
"No, its nothing like that, but it would give him confidence that you were alive and well."
"Kieran, John and his family do have strong bonds with Rory. I think it would help if you involve all three of them."
"Hmm! That makes sense, Mr B, and if it doesn't work it’s still worth a try.
Corey, if we’re finished I’ll get it in my mind."
"A bit longer, Kieran. I want to hear everyone's input and any corresponding reactions."
He looked around and, apart from Tan, got a series of head shakes.
"It’s probably not important but I did realise that when Kieran showed Nathan the different kinds of power he left one out."
"No I didn't."
"The Life Power. Kieran. You stopped calling it because Ranevargar nearly had a fit when he saw what you were doing."
"It’s too dangerous, Tan. He stopped me because it’s totally taboo in the Realms."
"Not exactly. He did say to use extreme caution and always have Rhys close by in case you used it and went too far."
"Hey, Tan’s right, Kieran. I remember it clearly because the way you were practising was dangerous."
"What are we talking about, Kieran? No one has ever said anything about a Life Power to me."
"I used to practise making glows with it, Corey, till we found out how dangerous it could be and we haven't even thought about it for ages. Ranevargar explained that it’s generated by every living thing."
"Everything?"
"Yes, and it’s nothing to do with Nexus Power – well I don't think it is."
Corey went quiet for several seconds.
"Show us."
Everyone stared. The tone was so strong.
"Corey, it’s dangerous."
"Sorry, that did sound demanding. Kieran, you’re blocked from the Nexus and its power, so this might be important."
"I don't think so. Making a tiny glow for more than ten seconds sends me unconscious."
"Really? Then that’s good news."
Rhys laughed.
"Going unconscious is good news? Get real, Corey."
"Think straight, Rhys. It’s the ten seconds that’s the good news. If Kieran stops before then he’ll still be conscious - and that means he’s got a degree of control."
"I suppose, but what’s the point? A tiny glow for five seconds is even more useless."
"Good thinking, Rhys. You’ve given me an idea.
Kieran, instead of a tiny glow for five seconds could you make it half a tiny glow for ten seconds?"
"Half? Corey, you’re as bad as Ranevargar. He always insists that fine control is just as important as major.
Okay, I’ll do my normal call first and cut it short.
Rhys, get ready to zap me."
"No! No! Tan’s whole point was about what Nathan's Power Eyes might see.
Nathan, sit next to Kieran and watch closely."
"We can't do it here. The campfire’s too bright."
The whole group moved.
"Ready, Nathan?"
"Yes!"
"One, two, three, four, five."
The tiny glow disappeared from the palm of Kieran's hand and Rhys gave him the necessary energy zap.
"Could you see anything?"
"I’m not sure. I think so ... Can I have another look, Kieran?"
"I’d forgotten how hard that is ... Okay, here we go."
Corey repeated his count of five and once again the pinprick of light cut off and Rhys touched his hand to Kieran's temple.
"Wow! That’s amazing ... Hang on."
One by one Nathan directed his gaze at each person and then at Rom.
"That is so cool."
That brought a laugh from Corey.
"Nathan, we need a more practical explanation. Cool doesn't really tell us much"
"I can see it all the time, Corey. I just didn't realise till Kieran focused it in his hand."
"All the time? More explanation please."
"Well –! – It's sort of like air. You just take it for granted. You all glow but that's not the right word, and Rom’s glow has a different flavour except that's a wrong description too."
"Kieran, can you manage another effort?"
"Lots more, if Rhys helps me recover each time."
"Good. Try reducing the strength of the call this time while Nathan watches even more closely."
"He'll have to. If it works the glow might be too soft for the rest of us to see."
Instead of going straight ahead, Kieran steadied his mind and considered the calls he’d just made. Yes, the process had been instinctive but there definitely was a pattern. And yes, part of it showed he was using a full on setting.
"Are you okay, Kieran?"
"No problems, Corey. I’m looking at the call pattern and working out how to change it ... Here we go."
A reduced glow appeared. Corey did the five count then Rhys did the recovery zap.
"Excellent. You clearly have control.
Nathan, did you see anything new?"
"Yes. I was ready this time and the glow doesn't come from the Life Power. Kieran turns it into ordinary power first and uses that instead."
"I do?"
"That's what it looks like. The Life Power gathers in your hand then disappears and ordinary power takes its place."
There was a grasp of astonishment from Corey.
"Nathan, you’re a wonder! You show us new things faster than we can keep up."
"I do?"
The repeated exclamation brought smiles all round, then the silence of expectation for Corey to explain himself.
"Yes, your description suggests that Kieran can direct the Life Power to where he wants it.
Kieran are you still up to trying a few more things?"
"Of course. Rhys fixes me, and if I only use the half strength calls I can do as many as you like."
"Okay, first experiment. See if you can put the glow in Rhys’s hand instead of your own."
"We already know he can, Corey. He used to make candlewicks glow and the candles could be in any position on the table."
Tan’s voice came.
"Mr B’s right, Corey. I remember one time I reached to move the candle closer to Kieran and it was glowing before I touched it."
"Show us, Kieran. It sounds instinctive."
That happened.
"Good. This time I want you to start the glow in your hand then move it to Rhys's."
That happened too, but Mr B objected.
"The glow part is normal energy that Kieran can do zillions of things with."
"Hmm! Interesting. You’ve just prompted the next experiment and we’ll need Nathan's Power Eyes to tell us if it works.
Kieran, can you make a call but then not convert it?"
That sounded straightforward but it took three tries before Nathan excitedly said it was working.
"It gathers in your palm, but it doesn't stay there. It kind of seeps into your hand like it's going back where it belongs."
Corey's mind raced with new possibilities and pondered what Nathan's perception of belonging might mean.
"Kieran, we could spend the whole evening on this but reassuring Rory is a bigger priority at the moment. Can we try one more thing?"
"Sure."
"It's a big one. Instead of calling on your own Life Force I want you to access mine."
There was shocked silence.
"No way, Corey. If something goes wrong you could die."
Kieran agreed.
"Mr B’s right, Corey. Calling on other people's Life Force was what made it taboo in all the Realms. It was so terrible they called it The Great Death."
"I still think it might be important, Kieran. If you keep to the same time and half-call restraints it’s the same risk you’ve been facing with no apparent worry."
Kieran had a think and, as usual, Corey was right. None of the half calls had worried him in the slightest.
"Okay, Corey, but if it works I’m going to cut it at two seconds instead of five. Stand next to Rhys, and, Nathan, watch closely please."
It didn't work and Kieran stopped after four tries.
"There’s no point in going on, Corey. It has to be like the call I use for myself but I haven't got a clue how to make it."
"Okay. We’ll let it cook in the back of our minds. Back to the campfire, everyone."
