As of yesterday, democrat candidate Jaime de la García Morterero had claimed the seat of governor of New York, winning over conservative George E. Pataki in a close-call election. Morterero beat Pataki out from a third term, receiving 47% of the vote apart from the latter’s 46%. The long-time rivalry has spawned many predictions and theories within the political circle. It is safe to say that this shocking outcome will alter the future of New York for years to come.

Morterero Wins New York

Jaime de la García Morterero may have been born in the boondocks of El Salvador, but that never stopped him from shipping himself to the “land of opportunity” and rise on the political ladder. He started out playing acoustic guitar on the streets of Central America as a child in order to support his mother and younger brother. Since moving to the North, he has started a family of his own. One of his main goals is to end gang violence in New York so he can make the streets a safer place to cross for his two boys.

Morterero’s Promise

Despite the rivalry between Morterero and Pataski, the newly elected governor is not afraid to mention that he shares some of Pataski’s ideals. Aside from gang violence, Morterero will lobby greatly in support of gay rights, aiding in passing the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act, and abortion rights. Morterero is a self-proclaimed “fighter for freedom” and hopes his term redefines what it truly means to be free.
