What makes a good Systems Administrator?   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------     A deep streak of Masochism, very little life and the ability to wake up nice and cheery at 2am to a panicked phone call from an idiot user who has just done something stupid that is going to cost you two weeks work.   At least a BS in Computer Science. Remember , remember the 5th of November...

Remember, remember the fifth of November, The gunpowder, treason and plot, I know of no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.     People shouldn't fear their Goverenments. Goverenments should fear their people.   We are oft to blame in this, 'Tis too much proved - that with devotion's visage And pious action we do sugar o'er The devil himself.   I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more is none.   Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Drive By

About 1am last Friday I took a break from the sci-fi channel to amble off to the kitchen for a sandwich.   Shortly after arriving there I hear a series of loud POPs like a 9mm and I hit the deck. I thought I heard impacts hitting the house.   After the last of 8 shots, a car or truck punched it and left the area.   I looked for some time and found no evidence of gunfire... until this morning.   I found 3 X .380 bullet holes- two in the facia and one in a large window in the front of the

SN 2005AP: Another Bright Supernova

This Type II (core collapse) supernova was captured by cameras of ROTSE-III and followed up with the Keck. Pictured is a before and after image of the general area from file images.   Lately there have been several very bright supernova, in contrast with what we usually see out of objects with similar spectral characteristics. Clearly it is a type II event- confirmed by spectra.   Why have the type II SN we've been seeing lately been so bright? Could it be because they occure in a low extinc

Skip the flu this year

It really sucks. I started getting sick Saturday and went into self-imposed quarentine. I've got no problems sharing but viruses should be personal don't ya think?   It started out with the nose running like a sprinkler. Then the fever and chills set in. I've slept more in the past few days than I have in ages.   All I wanted to do was sleep.   Did I mention how much I hate to be sick? I could never use that excuse to skip work cuz the bosses knew if I called in sick, I must be half dead.

Gays In the Military

Obviously there were no gays in the military in this WWII era recruitment poster- despite the coy looking blond twink servicing all those pipes and valves.     Nothing homo-erotic at all about this big, burly sweaty man slamming that big shell home...     This WWI era recruiting poster is looking for young men and seamen...     Oh well, leave it too the marines to know where the action is.   Semper fi, do or die, Marine Corp, Marine Corp, Marine Corp!   ______________________

Biggest Supernova Ever Recorded

The brightest supernova   Astronomers using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ground-based telescopes have detected the brightest stellar explosion ever recorded.     Observations suggest supernova SN 2006gy is the brightest and most energetic stellar explosion ever recorded and may be a long-sought new type of explosion. Here, an artist's illustration shows what SN 2006gy may have looked like if viewed up close. NASA/CXC/M.Weiss   Astronomy Magazine Online May 7, 2007   The brig

Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village

Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village   Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday. Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.   Residents c

Libris Magnus- I

I have been working on a project for a long time that I'm going to describe in the next few blog entries.   I began collecting e-books some time ago. At first it was just a few but as I began finding more and more sources for them, my ebooks collection became like a snowball rolling downhill getting bigger and bigger gathering momentum.   It wasn't too long before the management of this collection became a real chore. This library is now several hundred gigs in size and contains over 100,000

the Burden of Perfection

Once upon a time there was a thing called science. Science was a beautiful thing because it offered answers to those with the wits to comprehend without the need for witch-doctors or crystal balls. In fact science offered humanity something very special: an ordered universe without the need for the super-natural.   Science had a pristine logic and reasoning process because even when science reached the wrong conclusion, each step in the scientific method depends on empirical evidence and peer

Mr. Perfect (or what I'm es-saying about character)

Mr. Perfect   Mr. Perfect     What would we have in common and why would I be interested in reading about him?   We have all met Mr. Perfect in literature. Perfect grades, perfect teeth, perfect family, perfect life.   What an perfect ass-hat. We have NOTHING in common. I'm hating this guy already.   He's one of those rich, preppy guys that have parties with their rich, preppy friends on their perfect yachts and their perfect mansions.   Where's an F-ing U-boat when you need one?

Get a Load of this Ass-wipe!

I know that there are political differences and all but why is it that the closet-case weirdos always seem to end up being family values republicans?   We've seen it over and over and over and over... The hypocrisy of this individual is astonishing!   Check it out. This isn't about politics. Of War, Peace and Asshats

I enjoy a political discussion. Really- I do but so many people are going off half-cocked that if you've got half a brain, you overqualified to debate with these asshats.. err I mean people. I find the ignorance of historical facts and the assumption of a certain ideology to be the most damning offenses. Often you find yourself debating with someone who has nothing more substantial to base their argument on than mama sez...   Let us examine Asshat #1   >>To rightwing moderates....

Goodbye to One of Histories Biggest Assholes

Jerry Falwell, right-wing hatemonger and religious fanatic, was found unconscious in the office from which he oversees the Culture War at Liberty University today. He died a short time later.   Falwell first came to prominence in the late 1970s when he lead a motley coalition of religious nuts, skinheads, neo-Nazis and slack-jawed yokels called the Moral Majority which handed Ronald "Bonzo" Reagen and George Herbert Skippy Walker Bush the 1980 elections and an unprecedented dynasty of politica
