Normally, I wouldn't respond to a blog post like this ( ), but my response has to do with why the change, and exactly what type of change it is.

1. If you are switching to finish undergraduate education, I would say smaller is better (assuming it isn't a "community college" that only offers Associate degrees). In your case, you should seriously consider the advice that Mark Arbour gave in a reponse to a post from meg. In terms of finding someone to admire/look up to/be montored by, it is a lot harder at big schools, and the politics can be pretty bad, just watch yourself.

2. If you are going on to graduate education, you are going to have to stand on your own feet. Nobody you want to have mentor you is going to want to coddle you. Every prof. has their own way of doing things and wants others to agree and follow their lead. If you get thusly trapped, you will forever be branded with that advisor.

Those two things at the end of your legs are your best support (my deepest appologies to anyone physically challenged to whom that may be offensive). From what I can tell, one of you best talents has to do with taking what is in your mind and putting it on paper. Others will be better than you, some will have less skill but more recognition for reasons you cannot determine. None of that is your problem. Regardless of what some may think. Education is not a battle between you and the rest of the students or the professors. Education is a challenge to grow and develop your skills to he betterment of society, locally, nationally and worldwide. The true battle is with yourself and the work you know you need to do to achieve your goals. If you significantly deviate from that goal you will end up lost.

The bottom line is that placing others above you in your own mind makes it difficult for you to express your thoughts as an equal. Yes, you may have something to learn from others, but that does not make you less than they are or make your knowledge and skills inferior.

Of course, all this excludes Dom who is, after all, perfect whan it comes to storytelling

I can relate to doing well under pressure. I guess it's a fine line between letting competition motivate you and having the results affect you negatively. In other words, to be able to objectively see where your work product might not meet standards set by someone else's work, without thinking that you yourself don't measure up.

As to finding people who can inspire you ... as the saying goes, "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Sounds to me like you're ready .
