Batman Day
May 1 is Batman Day. The unofficial holiday celebrates and honors one of the world's most well-known comic book superhero. While the origins of this holiday are unknown, the general consensus is that the day commemorates the date in 1939 when the crime fighter made his debut in the Detective Comics
Batman is a fictional superhero created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and published by DC Comics. The superhero who made his first appearance in May 1939 is also sometimes known as The Dark Knight and the Caped Crusader. His real name, however, is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who wears a bat costume while combating crime in the fictional Gotham City.
How to Celebrate?
- Like us, most you of you probably do not need an excuse to revisit your favorite Batman comics, but if you do, today is a good day to do some marathon Batman comic reading.
- Wear a cape and go to work in your Batman costume.
- Watch any of the several Batman movies out there with family and friends. Maybe you could combine it with a Batman themed costume party? Tell all your guests to come dressed as a Batman comics character.
Did You Know…
…that Melbourne, Australia was very briefly called Batmania? It was named after explorer John Batman.

One day my three-year-old daughter asked when her birthday was. Knowing that the date, April 14, would mean nothing to her, I said, "It's either just before or just after Easter."
"Great," she said. "You don't know when my birthday is either."

The wheel of my grocery cart was making a horrible scraping sound as I rolled it through the supermarket. Nevertheless, when I finished my shopping and saw a cartless woman, I offered it up, explaining, "It makes an awful noise, but it works."
"That's okay," she said, taking it. "I have a husband at home like that."
***
I was sprawled on the living-room couch watching my favorite show on the Food Network when my husband walked in.
"Why do you watch those food shows?" he asked. "You don't even cook."
Glaring back at him, I asked, "Then why do you watch football?"
***
My daughter and her husband, naval reservists, have an eight-year-old son. When one of his parochial school classmates told my daughter that Angus had said a bad word, she said,
"He can't help it. Both his parents are sailors."
