Fun Observances ( 3 )
No Pants Day
No Pants Day is an unofficial holiday that occurs on the first Friday of May. Celebrated mostly in the United States, it calls for participants to spend their day without wearing pants in public. Participants are encouraged to act as if not wearing pants is a normal thing to do.
It is unclear when No Pants Day began and who started it. There are accounts that suggest that the first No Pants Day occurred in 1985 or 1986, while other accounts credit the Austin, Texas-based humor organization, the Knighthood of BUH, for starting the day.
No Pants Day is sometimes confused with No Pants Subway Ride Day, which is held in the month of January. The first No Pants Subway Ride Day was held in New York City in 2002 with only 7 riders who went on the New York City Subway without their pants. The event was organized by Improv Everywhere, a humor organization. Since then the Day has been celebrated in many different cities around the world. Improv Everywhere announces the date for the No Pants Subway Ride Day a month in advance.
How to Celebrate?
- Spend the day wearing no pants.
- Appear in public without your pants on. If you are uncomfortable going out without your pants on, what about wearing a skirt, dress or a kilt?
Did You Know…
...that the word pants is derived from the term pantaloons, which in turn comes from pantaloun, an Italian term used to describe a man who wears tight trousers? Pantaloun in turn came from the name of San Pantaleone, a Christian saint, who survived 6 execution attempts. San Pantaleone meant all lion and later the term came to be used to refer to a foolishly brave person represented in comedy as someone wearing tight trousers.

Space Day
Space Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of May. An unofficial educational holiday created in 1997 by Lockheed Martin, Space Day aims to promote the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields among young people.
The day also encourages the public and especially the youth to learn more about space and space exploration.
Space, also called outer space refers to the void that exists between the Earth's upper atmosphere and other celestial bodies in the known and unknown universe. While the term space might make it seem like the vast expanse of the universe beyond the Earth's atmosphere is empty, it is in fact, not empty at all. Space is full of different form of radiation and lots of debris from the formation of our solar system. Some of this debris is in the form of meteors, comets, and asteroids.
The unofficial holiday is also sometimes known as International Space Day or National Space Day.
How to Celebrate
- Look for Space Day events close to you and take the young people in your life to attend some of these events.
- If you do not have any events close to you, why not create one?
- Visit your closest space museum and spend the day exploring the exhibitions and learn more about astronomy.
Did You Know…
...that one cannot hear any sound in space? Sound travels from one point to another by making vibrations in molecules and atoms. Because there is no air, and therefore no medium through which sound can travel, outer space is eerily quiet.

Beverage Day
Raise a glass to all your favorite beverages on Beverage Day.
This unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on May 6 and is also sometimes called National Beverage Day. While the origins of Beverage Day are unknown, we can all safely assume that the day encourages people to honor their beverages of choice and acknowledge that a humble beverage has the power to make or break many situations. A good beverage can energize you after a long, tiring day. It can also make a long, boring meal go fast, it can bring together two strangers, and it can make a party more fun.
Whether your preferred beverage is a hot cup of tea, a delicious and healthy smoothie, or a tall glass of lemonade, Beverage Day is the perfect excuse to indulge yourself by drinking it all day long.
- Sit back, relax and celebrate the day with your favorite beverage. It could be anything from something as simple as water to a fancy cocktail.
- Try new beverages. What about tasting the national drink of a country you have never visited?
- Have a tasting party at home. Pick up a beverage you and your guests like and make or find different versions of it to taste and try. For example, you could do a beer or wine tasting party or a tea or coffee tasting party. Have each of your guests bring their favorite brand of beverage to share and serve foods that pair with the beverage of your choice. Who knows, you may just find your next favorite beverage at one of these parties!
Did You Know…
…that in common usage, water isn't usually considered to be a beverage?

I was leading a tour through Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico when a woman asked,
"How many miles of undiscovered passageways are there in this cave?"

A customer called our rental store to ask about rectangular tables. I told him we had six-foot and eight-foot tables.
His response: "What's the difference?"

The night we took our three young sons to an upscale restaurant for the first time, my husband ordered a bottle of wine. The server brought it over, began the ritual uncorking, and poured a small amount for me to taste.
My six-year-old piped up, "Mom usually drinks a lot more than that."

A little boy was brought into our emergency room after ingesting part of a plug-in air freshener. After consulting Poison Control and monitoring him, the doctor wrote on his discharge, "Patient doing well. Ready to go home. Smells good."
