It's origin was in a now defunct rule of golf where a player whose ball was blocked by another player's ball had no relief.

A quick nod to Stymie of the Our Gang comedies.

Right now I'm stymied in disbelief that it was once a rule of golf.  That must have led to some interesting golf rounds.
