Egregious corruption covered by secrecy and legalism was a key contributing factor to the “Reign of Terror” during the French Revolution. Perhaps we are in need of a politician whopper-chopper with a cute little basket to catch liberated heads.

It is egregious when people can see wrong being done and will either ignore it or find a way to justify it.  It is what happened with the Nazi party in the 1930s and 40s, and there are many other examples of the same thing happening at other times.
