One synonym for busybody I hadn't seen before is marplot. It's a character's name in the 18th century play, The Busie Body.

Anyone remember Bewitched? Gladys Kravitz was a very busybody.

Just in case any of you were wondering?

I think she is ' Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet, if you please) ' from the

British sitcom, Keeping Up Appearances.

As a tie in, her husband, Richard, would have been a great example for the Wednesday(23rd) - Word of the Day - henpeck(ed).

Hi @sandrewn,  I think it could also be the Heddy Wainthropp character Dame Patricia Routledge played in another series.  That's because the red hat was a trademark of Heddy's character.  Both of Routledge's characters were busybodies.

You mean Hetty.

If you look, the hat is definitely Hyacinth's. It's in multiple images.

@raven1@drpaladin

I thought of her other series also. However Myr (clever fellow that he is) provided the answer with the film clip he included. Top right hand corner, faint, but visible for all to see - Keeping Up Appearances.

Score:

Myr - 1

As usual Dr P, you are correct on both counts.  Here's an image of Hetty that reminded me of the gif Myr used.

Speak for yourself. I knew it was Hyacinth without any hints.

Besides, a detective isn't technically a busybody since it is driven by purpose.

A technicality doesn't mean she was not a busybody good doctor.  I loved her role as Hetty, the housewife turned detective.  Hetty was a delightful change from Hyacinth that proved to me Patricia Routledge was a great actor as well as a comedian.

Not ALL busybodies are bad though.  Angela Lansbury's character, Jessica Fletcher, in "Murder She Wrote" made a career out of her inherent pushy, nosey nature. Granted, those she sent to jail thought her success was something less than something to be happy about.

Technicalities are always important. They can be the difference between life or death.

If one is the subject of an an investigation, one might consider a detective a busybody. The always quick to err chief inspectors on Father Brown consider the good priest to be a busybody. It's not a word with a positive connotation.
