The band Motley Crue is what first comes to mind.

As a noun, motley means fool or jester.

There is an investing advice site named The Motley Fool. One could take the name to be repetitive, as The Fool Fool or as Disparate Fool by the title.

When I was in college, every apartment I lived in hot a motley collection of old furniture,  but it sufficed.  It's amazing what we did to get a higher education.

The word motely is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon word motteley, meaning composed of many colors.  Then during the 14th and 17th century in England it was used to refer to woolen fabric of mixed colors.  It later evolved to mean anything that is composed of disparate or unrelated elements.

My Middle East History professor (from Lebanon), had a real bug up his backside about The Sahara.  It is absolutely NOT the Sahara Desert as "Sahara" is Arabic for Desert and calling it the Sahara Desert is calling it "Desert Desert"

I had a teacher whose favorite phrase was finally at last.

Each and every time I visit the 'Word of the Day', I never know where my wandering mind (and fingers) will take me. This comment triggered the trip today, fond memories/nostalgia!!

For some reason I always thought Muttley was a mash up of mutt and motley

You'd admit that... in public?

As far as 80s hair bands went, Motley Crew certainly wasn’t the worst. Trust me on this. I can post proof. There was bad and then there’s truly wretched.
