Muskmelons like cantaloupes and honeydews are gourds like squash, zucchini, pumpkin, and watermelon.

Muskmelons have a sweet, juicy flesh that can be yellow, orange, green, or white, and each is surrounded by a rough skin.

Muskmelons got their name because of the sweet odor of the ripe fruits.  Musk is the Persian name for for a type of perfume, and muskmelons are native to Persia (Iran) and other adjacent areas, both east and west of Iran.

Not all have rough skin.  Honeydew and casaba are smooth skinned.
