Typhoons & Landladies

There's a big ass typhoon that's hitting Hong Kong and southern China now, and we're getting hit by the outer bands of rain. It's nothing serious, but it's raining hard enough to keep me from going clothes shopping ... not that I wouldn't have found another excuse not to get off my lazy butt ... but I've definitely got to go tomorrow, because I have to have something nice to wear (that fits!) for my exam on Friday.

Good news on the landlord front! I just spent two hours helping her to file her taxes online, since she doesn't have a computer, and her friend that was helping her didn't have a floppy disk drive on her computer. So ... after going through that nightmare and helping her add things up, figuring out how the system works, etc., there's no way she can't return my deposit ... and she also said that any furniture that I can't sell, she'll take care of it. That's a good thing, since I wasn't sure how I was gonna handle that. She's also letting me stay the first week of July for free, and we worked out the utility payments and stuff, too. So, that's another load off my mind, unless she goes back on what we agreed on ... although after helping her with this tax mess, she'd better not!

Chapter 16 has already been through the first edit ... lots of red "ink" on this one ... but I think it'll be pretty good. I'm almost halfway finished with Chapter 18.

And my exam is this Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. It'll be just me and the three professors who are grading my exam (one of which is my graduate advisor) sitting in the massive conference room in the Chinese department. The good thing is that I'll get my score right away, so I can report back on Friday evening (Friday morning US time) on my score ... not that anyone really cares ... lol

And last but not least, BIG *hugz* to Kitty, Vance, and Benny for all being such wonderful friends ... and Joey, because his nose is just so gosh darned cute! And also to Nicko, who I hope is feeling better after his surgery! :D

 . Hehe I cannot stand going out in the rain. That's nice of your landlord to let you live there for a free week. Even though I think she drives u nuts. If I was a landlord, I would love to have u as on of my attendents.

Yes Vance is such a sweetie.

Take care David.

I'm glad that you seem to be doing ok regarding your landlady!

Just a suggestion: Make sure you think carefully about whatever pre-move shopping you might want to, before leaving TW. I know that when I moved back from overseas, I later regretted not getting a few things.

One thing on my "regrets" list was not taking lots of pictures, of everyday stuff, like the corner store.

I hope the clothes shopping went well today. And definitely congratulations on the landlady situation, and for being able to maintain your integrity and handling it in a way that benefitted both of you.

And the  are mutual, my friend.

Just got back from clothes shopping ... definitely not fun. First of all, it's hard enough to shop for clothes here since Chinese are built very differently from Westerners, with us 'big noses' (that's what they call us foreigners) having bigger frames ... not to mention that I've put on a little extra weight over the past couple of years, so it ended up being a case of buying what would fit me rather than what I actually liked the best. Even though I'm not "fat," I'm still a pretty big guy (6 feet, 180 lbs., although ten of that is coming off before I go home, Buddha willing). *sigh*

But at least I have something to wear tomorrow for my exam!

I care too David! and I can't wait to hear how it went. I'm sure you'll do real good though. I'm glad you were able to find some clothes even if they weren't exactly what you were looking for. Long as your pants don't go halfway up your calves you should be good! and  to you too!

Hmmmmm... Please tell us that this has nothing to do with the outfit featured in your new avatar?

On the other hand, it would certainly make an impression if you showed up dressed that way..

:P

Good luck with the exam!

Good luck on your presentation. I am glad that the landlady thing also worked out. I know stuff usually works out if I keep in the here and now, the day, etc but i forget it almost instantly and then i read about stuff like what you are doing and remember to take a deep breath and allow life to happen.. I have been really uptight tonight about some probably bad financial decisions and also flying back to Spain tomorrow. Reading your post may allow me to get some sleep before i start my 29 hr marathon return to Sevilla. Again good luck and thanks.. also really liked Chap 15. Pax Steve
