"Transformation" entered Middle English around 1400 via Old French. It originates from the Church Latin transformationem, meaning "change of shape".  This is built from the prefix trans- (meaning "across, beyond") and formare (meaning "to form or shape"), literally translating to "a change across forms".  

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the noun "transformation" was first recorded in English in the Middle English period (1150-1500) transformation, n. meanings, etymology and more, specifically before 1475.  The OED cites its earliest documented use in the Middle English translation of Ranulf Higden's historical chronicle, known as the Polychronicon transformation, which was famously translated by John Trevisa in the 14th century and later updated.  

According to the OED, the earliest known use of the word transform (as a verb) in English dates to around 1340.  It first appeared in the Middle English period in the religious and mystical writings of the English hermit and author Richard Rolle. The verb was borrowed into English from Old French and Latin, originally carrying the meaning to "change the form or appearance of" or "alter supernaturally".

Transformation is the driving force of storytelling. It provides the emotional core that connects audiences to the narrative.  By moving characters from an initial state of limitation or flawed belief to a place of capability, a well-crafted Character Transformation proves to the audience that change is possible.  
 
A robust transformative arc serves several essential purposes in a story:  
Emotional Resonance: Audiences are wired to empathize with struggle. Watching a hero face adversity and adapt makes the viewer's experience engaging and cathartic.  
Proof of Growth: Transformation is the Authoritative Guide on Character Dynamics showing what a character lacks at the beginning and what they gain by the end, such as newfound courage, trust, or self-respect.  
Thematic Meaning: The plot tests the character's core beliefs. The ultimate transformation delivers the moral or central message of the story to the reader.  
Audience Empathy: Stories that Transform the Reader's Perspective allow the audience to vicariously learn lessons, shifting their own real-world mindsets and perspectives.
