The word change entered the English language in the 13th century from Middle English, derived from Old French changier.  This Old French verb traces back to Late Latin cambiare and Latin cambire, meaning "to barter or exchange".  Ultimately, this Latin root is believed to originate from a Gaulish word, cambion (meaning "twisted" or "crooked").  

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the word "change" (both as a noun and a verb) was first used in English during the Middle English period (1150-1500).   The earliest known written evidence for the word in the English language dates back to around 1225: as a verb, it was recorded in the text Hali Meidenhad, and as a noun it was recorded in the text Ancrene Riwle.

The concept of change is the engine of all storytelling.  It provides mementum by moving characters from an initial state of equilibrium, through conflict, and into a transformed state.  Change grounds abstract themes in relatable, human experiences, making lessons memorable and enabling the audience to process complex ideas.  
 
Storytelling uses change across several core dimensions: 
Internal Transformation: Characters typically start with a flaw, lie, or false belief. The narrative arc forces them to confront this, resulting in a shift in mindset, perspective, or moral alignment.  
External Progression: Change dictates the plot. Whether a protagonist is solving a mystery, defeating a villain, or navigating an organizational transition, the external circumstances of their world must fundamentally alter by the story's conclusion.  
Audience Empathy: By experiencing a character’s struggles and ultimate transition, audiences engage deeply with the narrative. A relatable change journey helps lower resistance to new ideas and inspires real-world behavioral or cultural shifts.   
Systems and Social Change: On a macro level, stories challenge existing paradigms. Narrative change helps audiences understand new social experiences, reshape societal beliefs, and mobilize communities toward a specific goal.

"Not worth a tinker's damn": Something that is completely worthless or useless.

In the past if I'd seen that spelled "tinker's dam", I would automatically assume someone just misspelled the word dam.  Now, I know better.  Btw. when my grandfather used that term, I believe it meant it with damn, not dam.  Thank you for correcting my misunderstanding.
