The word comes from the root guile came from Old French, meaning treachery, deceit, or wile.  The word beguile  was formed in Middle English by combining the prefix -be (thoroughly) with the noun or verb guile (deceit or trickery). It first appeared in English as begilen or bigilen, meaning to cheat, deceive, or elude by artifice.  In the 1580s the meaning expanded to include "entertain with pastimes" or pass time pleasantly (such as beguiling the hours), shifting from pure deception to charming amusement.  

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) , the verb beguile was first used in English around 1225 during the Middle English period.  Its earliest recorded appearance is in the early Middle English religious text Ancrene Riwle.  The first recorded use of the noun form comes much later in the mid-1600s (specifically 1637 in the writings of Samuel Rutherford).

Beguilement is the secret engine of storytelling because it transforms passive listeners into active, captivated participants.  At its core, to beguile means to charm, enchant, or lead someone by deception—and fiction is, by definition, a beautiful lie.  Without the ability to beguile, a story is just a sequence of events; with it, a story becomes an immersive experience.  

Why Beguilement Matters in Narrative:  
Secures the narrative hook. Writers use enchanting prose or intriguing setups to instantly grab reader attention.
Maintains the illusion. It deepens the reader's "willing suspension of disbelief," making the fictional world feel entirely real.  
Deepens character dynamics. Charming, manipulative, or enigmatic characters use beguilement to drive the plot forward.  
Heightens emotional stakes. When an author successfully misdirects the audience, the final payoff or twist hits much harder.  

How Beguilement Operates in Stories:  
Authorial Deception (The Craft):  Authors act as illusionists.  They use unreliable narrators to distort the truth and red herrings to lead readers down the wrong path.  By charming you with one hand, the hide the plot twist is the other. 
Character Motivation (The Plot):  Beguilement is a powerful tool for characters.  Think of  sirens, trickster gods, or smooth talking antiheroes.  These characters don't use brute force, the use wit, charm, and seduction to alter the course of the story. 
Reader Enchantment (The Eperience):  Great stories use sensory language, rhythm, and pacing to create a hypnotic effect.  This aesthetic charm pulls readers into a state of "flow", where they lose track of time and become fully submerged in the story.

Of the shows' duos, my favorite was, Dudley Do-Right  "lonely defender of justice and fair play: handsome, brave, daring... and hopelessly lost"   and Horse.
