The word boscage (meaning a mass of trees, shrubs, or undergrowth) traces back to the Late/Medieval Latin boscus (woods, forest), which came from the Frankish busk (or Proto-Germanic *buskaz, meaning a thicket or bunch). This is also the origin of the modern French bois (wood) and bocage (hedgerow landscape).  It enter English via the Old French boscage (and Vulgar Latin boscaticum), meaning wood or woodland.  

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the noun boscage was first used in English around the year 1400 as record in the Middle English metrical romance Ywain and Gawain.

Two of us have learned a new word today, thank you. Just in case you ever come across the word, 'Boskage', it is a recognized spelling variant that appears in some regional or older texts. Both spellings mean a mass of trees, shrubs, or woody undergrowth, such as a thicket or grove.
