I try to avoid being smitten. It tends to evaporate reason.

The word smitten is the past participle of the archaic verb smite, tracing back to Old English verb smītan, which originally meant "to smear," "stain," or "defile", and Germanic roots.  

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the earliest known use of the adjective smitten and past participle of the verb smite dates back to before 1325 in the Middle English work Genesis & Exodus.  For hundreds of years, being "smitten" did not mean being in love; it meant being struck down by a physical blow, a disaster, a weapon, or a severe illness like the plague.  The word "smite" is recorded in English from the Old English period before 1150 as a verb, and from before 1200 as a noun.

Here is why capturing that "smitten" feeling is so vital in a narrative: 

It Creates an Instant Narrative Engine:  
Universal Stakes: Audiences instantly understand the motivation of a character who is smitten. It provides a clear, high-stakes goal: the pursuit of the beloved.  
Inciting Incident: It serves as a perfect catalyst. A character’s orderly life is instantly disrupted the moment they lay eyes on someone, forcing them out of their comfort zone.  

It Revels and Tests Character:  
Vulnerability: When a character is smitten, their emotional defenses drop. A tough, cynical detective or a powerful ruler suddenly becomes fragile and exposed.  
Flaws and Blind Spots: Infatuation clouds judgment. A smitten character will make irrational choices, ignore red flags, or walk into traps, which drives the conflict forward.  

It Shapes the Pacing and Tension:
