Quiddity comes from the Medieval Latin word quidditas, which literally translates to "whatness".  It starts with the Latin root quid, meaning "what" (the neuter form of quis, meaning "who" or "somebody").  Adding the Medieval Latin suffix -itas (meaning "-ness") created quidditas, a philosophical term for "the what it is" of an object.  Medieval scholastic philosophers used quidditas to translate Aristotle's concept of a thing's real essence—the core quality that makes an object what it is and distinguishes it from anything else.  

The noun "quiddity" was first used in English before 1398, according to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) as found in a translation by the Cornish writer and translator John Trevisa.
