Prop 8 blues

It looks like Prop 8 (Ban on Gay Marriage) is going to pass in California  . Obviously, it's upsetting.

I can't quite articulate all the things that I'm feeling right now, so I'll focus instead on Exit Poll Numbers from CNN. I found it fascinating to look at the numbers.

- Votes by age

The numbers look promising for the future. 63% of the younger set (18-29yo) voted No. As the 65+ set die off and get replaced, hopefully Californian's will repeal the ban in the future.

Age Range Yes No

18-29 (20%) 37% 63%

30-44 (28%) 53% 47%

45-64 (36%) 53% 47%

65+ (16%) 59% 41%

- Votes by Race & Sex. I was really surprised that 70% of African American's voted Yes and that was the number that really stood out.

Race Yes No

White (63%) 47% 53%

Af-Am (10%) 70% 30%

Latno (19%) 51% 49%

Asian (06%) 47% 53%

Other (03%) 50% 50%

My County in particular voted 75% Yes and only 25% no. That was truly sad (but expected). While that number sucks, I'm glad that I do have friends who were very supportive of the No side. I spent most of last night at an Election party and of the 18 people there, only 3 of us were gay/lesbian and all of the hetero's were very anti-Yes. The host of the party had participated in a Debate on Prop 8 and defended the No side pretty well. She and her husband were even profiled in an ad in the local paper as a straight married couple who supported the No side. One of the other guys was wearing a 'Straight against 8' shirt :D .

I realized how hard these 'straights' fought against Prop 8...more so than some gays I know.

So while Prop 8 passed, I still have hope for the future ^_^ .

What truly boggles my mind is that the margin for Prop 8 is basically the same as the margin against Prop 4. I am an strong supporter of safe and legal abortion, no qualifications, no reservations. I simply cannot understand the mindset of the person who votes for protecting the right of a 15 y/o girl to have an abortion without the requirement to notify ANYONE (beyond otherwise abuse mandatory reporting laws) and, at the same time votes to deny homosexuals a right to marry in order to "protect" some concept of "tradition"

On the plus side, I believe the issue of "homosexual marriage" is now more likely to be taught in high school political science classes.

As for vic's "hope for the future" ... I suspect the next proposition put forth by these bigots will be to propose to amend the CA constitution to require a 75% majority for propositions to amend the state constitution

My reaction to Prop 8's passing is...well, firey. Those that genuinely oppose the idea of gay marriage, I can respect that opinion. I don't have to understand it, but I can respect it. To those that voted for prop 8 to avoid having gay marriage taught in schools I want to scream, "How dare you be that stupid! Did you even read the fricking document?"

On the plus side, the lying bastards that pulled that little slight of hand off have to face at least the next two years with the most liberal leaning government since Carter. Before, I was a bit lukewarm towards Obama. No I'm more along the lines of "In your face!"

Other issue blue many parents now it seems are horrified to answer questions example now move zach and (forget the other name) makes a porno the son asks the question during a baseball game or football game cause it was commercial. He called to complain that he had to hear that from his son wtf what happened to talking to your kids and explaining nothing wrong with asking questions.

I think and how it was polled was because of the school bit, religon also plays a part of it. again like snowy said how does the abortion thing though make sense?

Same thing happened in AZ. Prop 102 passed, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. Yesterday was a great day in some ways, but truly sad in others.

This stats are comforting, but do people hold those views as they get older? I'm afraid some of my friends, after leaving the nice, liberal environment of college, will turn into conservative nuts.

The African American antipathy to gays (well... philia for prop 8, to be more precise) is kind of ironic... I'd wager more gays voted for Obama, percentage wise, than vice versa. Of course, that sort of comparison isn't fair, etc, but it's true.

does anybody know how it works as far as people that have already been married and when does the band go into affect today

So far, there is no mention of nullifying the marriages that have taken place. My understand that for it to be retroactive, there should have been specific language in the amendment saying it was retroactive.

As far as the ban, I believe County Clerks have been enforcing it effective Wednesday, Nov 5th.
