Fighting over politics

Well, yesterday I got into a fight over the phone with a friend of mine over politics. She's vehemently Republican. I can respect that. However, I criticized the Bush administration and talked about the video I linked in the Gay Left Forum. I tried to tell her that NO president should have the type of power that the Patriot Act yielded. Quite frankly, the thought of a mad man with the power to have people arrested just by calling them traitors is quite frankly unacceptable. That is so similar to what Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and other tyrants have done throughout history. A climate of fear is a breeding ground for the stifling of civil liberties and the usurpation of human rights in general. I may be a liberal, but I am a civil libertarian above all else, and any threat to civil liberties is a threat to what I believe is the American way. This country is not what it once was, a beacon of freedom, and that is a scary thought, and if it comes down to it I will fight and die to protect our freedoms. I don't care if the president is Democrat or Republican. When he uses his power to take my rights away, I have serious issues. I just wish my friend understood my position, but she clearly does not. I'm suspect simply because I voted for Obama. But believe me, if he was doing what Bush was doing, I would be just as appalled.

I have Republican family members, which is even worst, because it's harder to tell them to f**k off. Or even if you do, they tend to come back.

There's a certain hysteria among Republicans lately. They handle defeat differently than Democrats. Democrats usually whine a lot and just sit back and get beaten down until they can get up again. Republicans keep on fighting, a fight to the death mentality that may, if they continue the way they're going, actually work out that way. You can see that in the way they couch their bullet points, and even more clearly in the tactic that Eric Cantor has launched to disrupt and disorient the rookie Democrats in the House through the use of those archaic points of order.

As for the issue of civil liberties, well, they're absolutely key. More importantly, the issue you raised in your video goes beyond that, it has to do with what is or is not constitutional. The way that Bush trampled on that document that he promised, swore to uphold takes his transgressions from beyond criminal, in my opinion, and into the range of treason. And if not for Bush, most certainly for Cheney.

I think it's a shame. And normally I keep my mouth shut when she talks about politics, but I'd had my fill. She's basically to a point where she hates anyone who happens to be a Democrat and has compared Obama to Hitler... talk about irony. Obama isn't the one who wiped his ass with the US Constitution. Bush was the one who did that.

Most Republican would be angry with the video you linked Tim. Comparing Republicans to Nazi's is not going to win anyone friends. :D

I wouldn't think too much of it from your friend.

It's a defense mechanism, which the republican voters want to insulate themselves. I am not one of those that can't take a pot shot. :P

I disagreed with the Patriot Act and I know other Republicans argued against it, too. It was an idiotic act that was half-ass. Most urban middle class Republicans are smart and contrary to most beliefs, not anti-gay or anti-abortion; although, I am against unlimited abortion on principle. However, the south is not a place where these conventions work.

You know what they call smart middle class Republicans who are not-anti gay or anti-abortion?

They're called Democrats. :D
