TITLE:

CLUB KID GAY BLACK

Original gay themed short story for development as screenplay or theatrical play.

Stephen C. Basso, author 2004, copyright

He was born Jerome Washington Byrd in the Bronx, New York in 1969. Harlem was home, specifically 126th street. A small apartment is where Wilma Johnson Byrd raised her three sons, Jerome was the youngest. Martin was the oldest born in 1965, then Raymond in 1967 and finally Jerome in 1969.

Her older two boys both wound up in State Juvenile facilities and eventually tours at Rikers. Jerome was different from the day he was born, smart, bright and always questioning.

Wilma had a good job with the Telephone Company. She would occasionally sing in a local Harlem nightclub, reliving the good old days when she performed with the likes of Cob Calloway. She was a large woman and could belt out a show tune on a dime! Maybe that's where Jerome got his artistic side from.

It was Mount St. Michael High School for Jerome. He went on a partial scholarship and took the train and bus every day up to High School. After school he would do maintenance work to offset the cost of tuition.

Jerome was not a typical black student at the Mount. He played no sports, no football, no hoops. He was there solely to learn, to get an education, and learn he did. Jerome learned the ways of the white boys and discovered it wasn't all that bad. Especially the money! He learned quickly money was a good thing! He never clicked or fit in at the Mount, and in 1987 graduated with honors. He accepted an academic scholarship and financial aid package to Baruch College in Manhattan. At the tender age of eighteen, he discovered more of New York City, specifically Greenwich Village and the downtown club scene.

And here my story begins
