Being the start of a new week, Monday's are also a good time to take a look at some of the different stories that can be found on Gay Authors. With so many great works, it can be easy to overlook one and Monday's provide an opportunity for us to help make one of them stand out and maybe catch your interest. Today, we're bringing you a review by Timothy M. of BigAKHorton's story "Misunderstandings." Enjoy!

    Misunderstandings

Misunderstandings by BigAKHorton is a story I return to whenever I want to feel good about life. I forget how I came across it, but whenever I think about the main characters, Davis and Luis, I get this warm, cuddly feeling inside. It’s one of those ‘Complete’ stories where I keep hoping the author adds another chapter, just so I can spend some more time in the company of its heroes. I also wish AK would post more stories, because this one is wonderful.

The slightly scary title and the short description (‘It was just a one-night-stand. Wasn't it?’) hide an unusually sweet story in spite of the almost trite theme of two guys who are attracted to each other but assume the other man isn’t interested. The main theme is explored in the first chapter which is the same length as the two subsequent chapters combined. But each chapter contains several important issues which Davis and Luis must deal with in order to find their happiness.

The odds are stacked against them, mainly due to Davis being a lot older than Luis, but also because of how people perceive the big guy. If anyone deserves the epithet Gentle Giant it’s Davis. I love the way AK describes him and how Davis deals with being lonely and desperate for a relationship. He likes himself and has plenty of humor and a dignity and honesty which are beautiful to witness. He has his faults too, one of which has me laughing like mad: he absolutely cannot wake up in the morning. Naturally, Luis is the opposite and jumps out of bed wide awake. It’s hilarious and cute to watch those scenes unfold.

It’s hard to say what I like most about this story, which is a wonderful mixture of funny scenes, like the one where Luis tries to explain ‘bear culture’ to his co-worker Shelley, and of tender and sometimes sad moments when Davis and Luis try to work past the misunderstandings and define their relationship.
There are some truly breath-taking romantic moments in there, and they are even more awesome for being unexpected, unsentimental, and utterly sweet. Especially the kissing. Oh, and then there are the delightful descriptions of ‘meet-the-friends’ (ch 2) and ‘meet-the-parents’ (ch 3), where Shelley, who is a genuinely nice girl, once again plays a crucial role.

I could go on and on, but you should go and experience the story yourself. ‘Misunderstandings’ is truly one of the hidden gems on GA, and it deserves more readers, likes and reviews. Hopefully, acknowledgement of his talent might spur the author to share more stories with us.

    Weekly Wrap Up
Did everyone have a great weekend? The deadline for submission to the 2014 Winter Anthology has passed by, so I hope everyone was able to get their anthology stories turned in. I've been working on getting the anthology prep done, so keep an eye out in the coming days for the anthology to go live! Also, just a reminder to all the authors participating in the anthology, please check the Anthology Double Check thread to ensure your story is listed! Now, let's see what happened this week in the GA News Blog.

Monday, Cia announced this month's CSR story. If you haven't already read "Space Pioneer" by Dolores Esteban, this would be a great month to do so, then you can take part in the discussion on December 29th!

Tuesday we had our second Tech Tuesday in which Myr talks about updating the look of GA Stories and invites everyone to check it out.

Wednesday we had a special edition of Ask An Author by Dark, four authors with two questions each. Lots of great questions and answers.

Friday brought us two brand new prompts, as well as a new poetry prompt. Hopefully you'll feel inspired! We also featured two of the responses from Poetry Prompt #3!

    Author Interviews
Many might have noticed that there was no "Ask An Author" feature last month. There were a few reasons for that, but one of the main ones was because this month we're doing a Special Edition of Ask An Author! In the spirit of the season, Dark has gifted us with an Ask An Author feature that features not three, but FOUR, authors. On top of that, each of the authors this month has answered two questions each! Thanks Dark! Enjoy!

    Ask an Author #22

Welcome back to another quirky question and answer session with your favorite authors! Today is a special edition and as such features 2 questions apiece for 4 different authors!

In AtA #21, we had questions for authors comicfan, K.C., and reddirtwriter.

In AtA #22, we’ll hear from authors Comicality, Nephylim, Rob Colton, and Sasha Distan.

For their protection, the members who asked these questions shall remain nameless (unless they choose to reveal themselves). Please note that all author replies are copied as is, spelling errors and grammar eccentricities original to the individual.

First up today is signature author Comicality. Legend says that Myr was a big fan of the stories Comsie posted online and dragged a kicking and screaming Comicality to the then-fledgling teen fiction website that today is known as Gay Authors. With 4,758,720 total words in over a hundred different stories, Comsie is one of our most beloved (and followed) authors. My One True Weakness is Comicality’s most recent multi-chapter story, told in first person about young Russ’s search for his one true love. Check it out! You know Comicality won’t leave you hanging for long!

To Comicality #1: How did you come up with the concept for "The Secret Life of Billy Chase?"

Actually, "Billy Chase" began as a fanfiction type of story. It was originally going to be about a boy whose father worked for a celebrity talent agency, and Billy would get the chance to meet and sleep with many well known famous cuties of the time. Hehehe, but after trying to plan out ways for that to happen, I decided to make Billy the focus instead of the starlets that he got into bed. And that story was much more interesting to me, and I thought it would be much more relatable to people reading. So I decided to write Billy as more of a regular teenage boy, just trying to navigate through the trials and tribulations of life, love, sex, and personal identity. Just as a normal person would, pitfalls and all. I'm glad that I went in that in that direction. Anything else would have burned out a long time ago.

To Comicality #2: What inspired you to write the Gone from Daylight series? Did you ever really have a solid direction you wanted the narrative to go in, or did it come to you as you went?

A weird story, actually. Hehehe! When I was in my late teens, I actually got the Chickenpox. Now...if anyone has had the chickenpox past the age of ten...you KNOW just how screwed up and almost FATAL something like that can be! Hehehe, and I had it sooooo bad! I was so depressed, for like two MONTHS or more! LOL! Anyway, "GFD" actually came from a really screwed up dream that I had while breaking a fever of 102* on a random Wednesday afternoon! Bedridden and alone...I had a dream about vampire teenagers who ran a night club, and fed off of their patrons one by one as they came in for a good time. Over time, I developed this story a bit more and called it "Midnight's Child". And that later became "Gone From Daylight". Also, I wanted an exotic name for the main love interest in the story, and came up with a bunch of different ideas, until the name 'Taryn' came to mind. I didn't know it was a real name until the movie "8 Mile" came out, and the actress/singer, Taryn Manning, was in the cast.

Next, say hello to another signature author, the vampiress Nephylim! Writing to us from Wales, Nephy is both an accomplished mother (one daughter and one son) and a published author. Swing by her blog some time to say hello! She’s strong, beautiful, determined, and by all accounts as nice in person as she is online. It’s been about a year now since my favorite Nephy story, “A Face in the Window,” was published, but since then we’ve been introduced to Frank, from ”Finding Alex”, Slave and Shade, from ”Boy Called Slave”, and a good half-dozen other new boys to keep us all interested. If you haven’t yet found Alex, I recommend you give it a read.

To Nephylim #1: Which character do you regret the most in Enigma and why?

Not sure what you mean by this. I've no regrets as far as the characters are concerned in the story. They each have their part and I like them all for different reasons. Even Faith. He was a stereotype it was fun to write. My biggest regrets as far as Enigma is concerned are, firstly that I haven't been able to afford to have it properly edited before publication and secondly that Silver isn't real

To Nephylim #2: Your fictional story, Dangerous Liaisons, deals with gays and bigotry fueled by religion. Do you feel that there is hope for these bigots in real life? That they can become more open-minded and come to accept gays? What do you think it will take to spark this change?

To be honest, the answer to this question has to be, I don't know. I have never been able to understand religious bigots. The bible provides no more reason to hate gays than to stone adulteresses or murder children. It has always shocked me that people who are happy to accept horrific behaviour (like murder, child abuse and torture) both in the bible and in the name of the bible can't accept an expression of love. What I mainly don't understand is - lets say the bible DOES condemn homosexuality and all homosexuals are going to hell, what does that have to do with anyone else? What gives someone the right to beat, berate or even murder someone because they're going to hell? If someone has joy and love in their hearts they have no room for hate and if someone has hate and bitterness in their hearts they have no room for love of any kind. I honestly have no idea what it would take to get the hate out. I don't really think they want it to.

Our next author is another signature author: Rob Colton. You may remember him joining us as robcub32 in the spring of 2012. With more than 10 stories and 4500 likes, it’s no wonder this writer was promoted so quickly! His first story was “The Deegan Incident” which has since been expanded with Book 2 of the series Galactic Conspiracies which takes the story to a doctor and his marine lover. Or, if sci-fi isn’t to your taste, you might like Rob’s most recent story, Noah's New Plan, about a man whose partner leaves him for a younger man. Find out what Noah gets up to as he starts over in his middle years.

To Rob Colton #1: What helps you to focus when writing?

It seems these days I have a lot of distractions trying to pull me away from writing. What I have found most helpful is to set aside time, usually on Saturday and/or Sunday. Instead of sitting with my laptop in the living room or wherever, I find I concentrate better sitting in my office at my desk using my big screen monitor.

To Rob Colton #2: How did you decide to start publishing your work?

What really got me to publish my work was the prodding of some of my fans, as well as author M. A. Church. After she made the successful leap into the publishing world, she gave me a ton of great advice. I was so nervous after submitting my first novella, but I am so very glad I took the chance.

Last up in this special edition is an up and coming writer, Promising Author Sasha Distan. At almost 10,000 likes and 150+ followers, I’d be surprised if you didn’t know this author! He’s a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, with a surprising story of encouragement by way of his godfather (way back when he was just a wee lad of 15). According to his profile, Sasha is now published on 3 different sites and is another one of our members from good ol’ Great Britain. His short story collection American Songbook has its 9th addition as of November 25th, and if you haven’t yet read about Clem’s confusion, I highly recommend it. Besides, who can resist a story about cowboys?

To Sasha Distan #1: How do you deal with writer's block?

Generally, I don't get it. For which the rest of you will now curse me as a lucky S.O.B, I'm sure. If a particular chapter, scene or character is being difficult, I always find a change in physical location helps. Even if all I do is go for walk, or make dinner, when I come back, I can look at the situation anew. Mostly I think I used up all of my writer's block in the four years I spent not writing between 2008 and 2012. My muse tells me I needed that time to let the story i was thinking about fully mature, but then, we disagree often.

To Sasha Distan #2: How do you balance your work and personal life with writing, especially when the ideas are flowing faster than you can write them?

The short answer is: I just don't sleep anymore. The longer answer is that I don't have as much social life as people might think. Being a teacher is a great excuse for not being available on school nights. In a typical week day, i'll be at work from 7.30 until 5. Then I'll go to the farm and ride, work sheep, feed dogs and do other farm jobs for three hours. Come home, cook dinner, and then write until midnight. And as my sister will attest, I type really fast. it helps.

As we enter the Holiday Season, send a thank-you note to your favorite authors on their profile pages, blogs, or in chat. You might be surprised how much even a small overture can really brighten up a person’s day. With the crazy weather this year and the usual hustle-bustle-stress of the holidays, one teensy smile can stretch a long way.

Coming next time: Mark Arbor, Thomas Nealy, and Thorn Wilde.

    Weekly Wrap Up
I hope everyone had a great week! For those that celebrated on Thursday, I hope you had a very Happy Thanksgiving! If you went shopping on Friday, I hope you made it out of the stores safely! It was a very busy week in the GA News Blog, but before we get to that, I have a brief reminder, though you'll get a second one later in the wrap up. The deadline for the 2014 Winter Anthology: Chain Reaction is quickly approaching. Stories must be received by the Anthology Proof Team by the end of the day on December 3rd, that only gives you a few more days to get those stories finished and sent to me (Renee) via PM for a final proof by the Anthology Proof Team. Now, lets see what the news blog had for us this past week!

For those who read this month's CSR story, Tears of the Neko, Monday was discussion day. Not only did Cia do a great interview with the author, but Craftingmom was also available on the blog for a couple of hours to answer questions from readers. One of the things Craftingmom talked about were Sugar Gliders. Do you know what they are? Do you want to know? Check out the blog entry!

Our normal Premium Tuesday's have been replaced for the foreseeable future with Tech Tuesday's. This week, Myr talked about a few of the upcoming changes. Not only did he talk a bit about what members can expect over the next few months, but he also offered up the opportunity for users to get familiar with the forum software upgrade. For more information as to what's happening, go and see for yourself what Myr had to say, plus, tune in next week for even more!

Wednesday's are kind of an open day for whatever we have to post for that week. This week featured Part II of the Constructive Criticism post that was started last week. Different authors have different opinions on what they consider constructive criticism. We were lucky enough to have 11 authors share with us their definitions. Hopefully these posts will help readers determine whether their criticisms will be considered constructive by the author they are reviewing.

Jumping ahead to Friday, we had two new prompts from the prompt guru. This week's prompts featured a new list of words as well as a prompt with the tag of "The Surprise Guest". The prompts are always a lot of fun, but one of the best parts of Friday's is being able to feature one of the prompt responses from the previous week. This week I featured DavidAB's response to prompt #372.

The blog didn't end on Friday like it normally does. The week even had a Saturday feature! Cia took over the blog on Saturday to provide the Signature Background for December. Considering the holiday theme of the month, what better story to feature than Myr's story "Nick Cringle". If you haven't already, why not go and download the background, and if you haven't read the story, it's a great story and well worth the read!

I hope everyone has had a great week and for those who celebrated Thanksgiving, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! It's that time of the week again for us to look at two new prompts supplied to us by the prompt guru, Comicfan. Hopefully one of these two will inspire something, and don't forget to share in the prompt forum!

I hope everyone is having a great week so far. Last week we did a post on Constructive Criticism. I received so many great responses, I decided it was better to break it up and do two posts rather than the single one that I originally had planned. Today, we're looking at the final five author's answers to the question: What is constructive criticism? Enjoy!

So there you have it, the final five! Now, I have a question for all of you! Do you have a question you would like to put to all the authors, site wide? Maybe you have a question you'd like to put to all the readers, or the editors? Maybe even the beta readers! I'm always looking for new ideas for blog articles. If you have an idea for a question for me to pose to the site members, send me a PM!

    Weekly Wrap Up
I hope everyone has had a great week. It's almost time for another week to start, but before that happens, let's take a look at what happened this week in the GA News Blog.

We started out Monday by looking at "Imprint" by Hermit in the Cave. We had a wonderful review provided to us by Faxity and based upon some of the comments, "Imprint" has been added to many members' reading lists! Check out the review and see if maybe you should be adding it to yours!

Tuesday was our Premium Tuesday post and this week we took a look at Ice Fairy 3. Just a reminder that this will be the last Premium Tuesday for a while and Tuesdays will be becoming our Tech Tuesdays until after the forum and story upgrades are complete. If you want to review a Premium Story for once the Premium Tuesday posts start up again, please contact Renee Stevens to see which stories are still available.

Ever wanted to know what authors considered to be constructive criticism? Check out our Wednesday Post, which just happens to be Part 1 of a 2 part post, the second part of which will post next week. These posts are all about authors' definition of constructive criticism!

Friday brought two new prompts for you to try. Not only is there a new "First Line" prompt, but there's a prompt with the tag of "All Alone". For our featured prompt response this week we featured Cia's prompt response to Prompt #370.

Yay! We're at the end of the week and that means it's time for two new prompt responses! I hope everyone has had a great week so far. Maybe you're just wanting to write a quick little tale, or maybe you just need something to get the writing juices flowing. Either way, hopefully one of these two prompts will call out to you! Don't forget to share your responses in the Prompt Forum!

    Prompt 372 – Creative
    Tag – First Line
“Wait. You want me to do what now?”

    Prompt 373 – Creative
    Tag – All Alone
You and your partner have been so busy lately that you have spent nearly no time alone. You are surprised when you find yourself being taken out on rowboat to the middle of the lake. Now that you are all alone together one of you feels the need to finally spill the beans. What is this conversation and how does your time alone on the lake end?

This week I decided to feature someone who hasn't done a prompt response in a while, but decided to do a response to Prompt #370, hope you enjoy this response by Cia:

That's the full prompt response, but if you'd like to leave her a review, you can do so here.
  9. Renee Stevens
Many authors welcome criticism, providing it is constructive, but... What is constructive criticism? The definition can vary from person to person, so rather than just one author giving their definition, I thought it would be a good idea to get multiple perspectives. I put the question out to all authors site wide and got eleven great responses. With so many great responses, I've decided to do a part 1 and a part 2. Here's part 1, enjoy!

So there's the first 6, next week you'll get the other 5!

One of the great things about starting a new week is bringing attention to a story that might go unnoticed amongst the nearly 3500 stories posted on Gay Authors. This week, faxity has supplied us with a review of an in process story called "Imprint", written by Hermit in the Cave. Feel free to share your thoughts as well, and if you aren't already reading it, maybe faxity's review will make you want to start! Enjoy!

‘Imprint’ is a fantasy story that will teach you the meaning of the word ‘mystery’. From the very beginning, nothing is revealed and yet everything is hinted at, drawing you ever onwards into a world that’s as enigmatic as it is intriguing. Each chapter will make you re-evaluate what you think you know, and you may be left staring at the screen in awe when you figure something new out. It’s on chapter 18 as of 9/16/14, and almost everything I ‘know’ about the story is either a supposition or an assumption. The author carefully leaves tidbits of information for the reader to find, like highly addictive chocolate chips, and they’re easy enough to miss that finding one gives a genuine sense of accomplishment. Each ‘tidbit’ is like one dot on a ‘Connect the Dots’ drawing, but the dots are spaced far enough apart that the picture could be anything. Your imagination will draw the lines, but just when it’s starting to resemble one thing, you’ll find another tidbit that makes it look like something else entirely.

This amazing world that Hermit in the Cave has created is defined by the characters. They seem to jump out of your screen and pull you into their world with them, and you’ll be drawn along through their trials and triumphs. A list of the characters would be a spoiler (refer to where I said nothing is revealed XD), so I’ll only describe the first character to be met, a man named Frost. He’s quiet, and he can’t handle too much human interaction. He lives in a small apartment, and he works at a bookstore where he doesn’t have to talk to anybody. Like all the other characters, his past is as murky as his future, but he’ll quickly earn your love and a place in your heart. Far from seeming pathetic, as you’d expect, Frost’s inability to function near people is endearing. The secrets surrounding Frost only become more mysterious when he meets a familiar stranger, and you’ll find yourself craving the next tidbit of information as they interact. Frost’s story isn’t the only one in ‘Imprint’, and you’ll find the story isn’t so quiet and peaceful after all when you read on.

If you’ve ever read a mystery book before, then you have a pretty good idea of what ‘Imprint’ isn’t. It’s unconventional, but not so different as to be jarring. It will pull you out of your comfort zone just enough to make you realize how much nicer it is out here. There’s no wondering who the murderer is, no imagining how they got away with it. ‘Imprint’ isn’t a story about a mystery; it’s a mystery about a story, and the story beneath the mystery is a thing of dreams. It’s an amazing romance, seamlessly woven out of multiple plots, that will demonstrate just how much love can endure, and how many different forms love can take.

Oh, if you don’t have a good idea of the plot by now, don’t worry. I don’t either.

    Weekly Wrap Up
I hope everyone has had a great weekend and is refreshed and ready for the start of a new week. Don't forget the deadline for the 2014 Winter Anthology is coming up fast, I look forward to seeing what everyone is working on! Now, let's see what happened this week in the GA News Blog.

This week was Signature Week here at the blog and we took a closer look at "Save or Sacrifice" by Comicality. Not only did we give a couple more chances to download the Signature Background for the month but on Monday, Cole Matthews provided us with a great review meant to entice readers. We didn't stop there, because on Wednesday, Cia did an interview with Comsie. She asked a lot of great questions and if you're curious to learn a little more about Comsie, go take a look.

If you've been thinking about whether or not to get a Premium Subscription, our Premium Tuesday is a great way to find out some of what's available in Premium. This week's featured Premium story was Displacement by Dkstories. There's also links to make it easier if you decide you do want to become a Premium member!

What better way to start the weekend than with a couple of new prompts from the prompt guru. This week Comicfan gave us a list of words and a prompt with the tag "the proposition". If either of those call out to you, take a gamble and maybe your prompt response will be featured next week just like Stephanie L Danielson's was this week.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope everyone has had a great week so far. To help you finish off your week and get a great start on your weekend, we have two new prompts from the prompt guru, Comicfan! We'd love to see what you come up with, so don't forget to share your prompt responses in the Prompt Forum, you never know, your response might be shared next week!

    Prompt 370 – Creative
    Tag – List of Words
Use the following in a story – turkey, gift, flowers, blue sweater, and a pen.

    Prompt 371 - Creative
    Tag – The Proposition
Life hasn’t gone too smoothly lately. Your job has been cutting back on both the hours and the work force. Your bills stay constant and things are just barely being met. Then you got sick and missed a month’s work while tests were run and you spent time in the hospital. With everything you saved gone it is getting desperate. That is when a proposition comes across the desk to you. Basically to the world outside you would be kept. A house, a car, and everything else, only you become the eye candy and the cook, but you can forget love and sleeping with them. You are just a cover. Do you go for it or possibly lose it all?

There were three great prompt responses from last weeks prompt responses, but this week I decided to feature Stephanie L Danielson's response to Prompt #369:

    Author Interviews
Comicality has been a member of Gay Authors since the beginning, and this week we get to find out a little more about him. If you haven't already downloaded your Signature Background for November, you still have plenty of time. Now, I'm sure you stopped by the blog today to read about Comsie, so let's get to it! Thank you to Cia and Comsie for the interview!

    Interview: Comicality on
    Save or Sacrifice

Who do you like best, Jerry or Tom?
Jerry! All the way! LOL! If you're talking 'cat and mouse', I felt bad for Tom, but Jerry had the most fun! Even if he was being a jerk, at least he got to laugh about it!

What are you wearing (and no fibbing!)?
Hehehe, right now? Black boxer briefs, and that's it. With a robe on the back of my chair in case I have to move around outside of my room. So...yeah. There's a picture to put in people's heads when they read my stuff from here on out! LOL!

Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point?
I wouldn't call it 'making my bed'. I straighten up the pillows and pull the sheets up. But it's hardly something that would pass military inspection.

    Chocolate or Vanilla?
    Vanilla! All the way!

What brought you to the site?
Myriddian! He saved me from nonexistence by being kind enough to offer me a place to stay.

Do your characters try to make like bunnies and create ever more convoluted plots for you? Or do you have to coax them out of your characters?
I have to admit that my characters bully me into doing whatever they want to do most of the time. I always have a plan in mind, but once I start writing, the characters develop themselves and eventually start telling me where the story will go from there. So I get suckered into becoming a reporter instead of a creator after a while.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Dean Lidster and Jaxsper Finn. They were some of the first authors that I ever wrote to from Nifty, and they both answered me! Going to their sites and seeing what was actually possible with writing stories, I can credit them with being the first people to ever inspire me to start writing my own stuff. And Savoir Faire too, as well as a few others!

Name one entity that you feel supported you in your writing endeavors outside of family members.
I think that was mostly the support that I got from the Shack forum. They are the ones who made it all worthwhile. Especially when "Billy Chase" became a weekly series, and people went to the Library to discuss the events of the story amongst each other. They were really 'reading' and absorbing what was going on. That was the biggest inspiration for me. So my thanks go out to all of them.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I'm always trying to do something new. That's the most challenging part for me. I want to write a story or create something that has NEVER been done before! And that's nearly impossible these days. But I keep trying. I keep thinking that there's got to be ONE tiny little corner of love and affection in a story that hasn't been explored yet! So that challenges me. Trying to find a new angle. Trying to improve on what I've done already. I always want to do better. I'm self critical in a major way, so I always want to reach the next level and make something that people will like and respond to. ::Fingers Crossed::

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
Wow....I can't even remember the harshest criticism that I've had since I started writing. I can honestly admit that I've had some really hurtful things hurled my way or said about me in public that have nearly brought me to tears, though. Just cruel and unnecessary comments from people who had no conscience at all about what they were doing. One that I remember, in particular, was 'Encyclopedia Dramatica'. Which is a site dedicated to hurting feelings and making fun of people. But their twisted views on me and my site and what I was trying to do...I can honestly say that they stick out as one of the most hurtful things that has ever been said about me. So congrats to them. I hope their proud of themselves for making me feel like shit while trying to help THEIR kids feel better and more accepting of who they are. Hope they got a big laugh out of it at my expense. But at the end of the day, my site has helped teens come out to their parents and friends. It's prevented suicides from happening. It has helped people realize that love still exists beyond the age of 18...and many adults have found love and companionship on my site well into their 40's. Teens as young as 13 find the stories and find strength where they couldn't find it elsewhere. And Encyclopedia Dramatica? I looked it up just now to add a link...and it's not there anymore. I think there's a bare bones copy of it, if you want to read it. But the Shack is still thriving...and they aren't. So to hell with them and their insults. I'm still going strong.

As for the best compliment...I don't think there is one. ANYBODY, from 15 to 50, who writes to me and lets me know that they read and enjoy the stories? I am SUPER appreciative! Honored and blessed! ANY word of positive feedback is enough to make me giggle for the rest of the day! It's all I ask. If there is someone out there who enjoys what I do...and they take the time to tell me so? I am TOTALLY in your debt! Thank you!!! And I love you all! Because most people don't say anything at all.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Ty, who does the "Storm" series has always been a favorite of mine. And guys who started out on the Shack, LemonFresh and TurtleBoy, have impressed me with their work a lot. Also Elias Scott, with his story, "Knots". I am WAAAAY behind on my reading, but I've seen some real talent and ambition in the new generation of writers these days! And when I get more time to read stuff, I'll be letting each and every one of them know how much I appreciate their genius. Because I'm super excited by the kind of stuff that new writers are writing these days!

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Hehehe, never. It's never happened. Not even now. I love doing it. But a writer? Eh....not yet. I've still got a lot of bugs to work out of my system.

Do you have any writing rituals?
Music. I can't write without music. I think I spend more time making playlists for the 'mood' I want for each writing session than I do on the session itself.

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
Not yet. I definitely have my days when I just have something on my mind or an emotion that I need to get rid of or off my chest...and I'll write stuff that I have no plans to ever release, I just wanted to write it out. But as far as stories that I haven't been able to publish? Not yet. If I believe in the finished product...I ALWAYS put it out there. If people hate it or have issues with it, I can always take it back. But at least I forced them to think about the concept. At least they were forced to be aware of it. After that...they have to make a conscious choice to be close-minded or open-minded. And they have to be aware of that choice. So whatever they decide...it's all on their conscience. I can live with that.

How many books/stories have you written? Which is your favorite?
Oh God! I have no idea!!! LOL! but if I had to choose one hat I was most in tune with...it would be "Gone From Daylight". It's a vampire story, but I think there is more of my real life and personal views on life than any other story on the site. So it's gotta be "GFD"!

How did you come up with the title?
    Hehehe, which title?

Did the characters or the plot come to you first?
Characters first. always. I'm heavily character oriented. The story? I come up with a vague theme or idea to work with, but until I have the characters straight, I can't figure out what the story is going to be about.

If your story were made into a movie, who do you picture playing each characters part?
Hehehe, No idea!!! I could fill up 50 pages on this question alone! Believe me!

What sort of coffee would your characters order? Simple coffee, complicated soy-non-fat-extra-espresso-half-caff-nightmare?
My characters are pretty young. Hehehe, prolly just 'coffee'. um...large.

What was your favorite part of the story?
I've got certain scenes that I really cherish in the stories. Moments that stand out to me. But I don't know if I have a favorite. They're all my favorite when I'm in the midst of writing that particular scene.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Hehehe, NOPE! Because I'm always writing, but if I mention a story, folks mob me with requests to 'hurry up', and God forbid it doesn't come out on the date I mentioned. I get BULLIED over stuff like that! So I keep my mouth shut, and just release stuff as soon as I can. People don't know how to be NICE to me when it comes to hours and HOURS of my free time!!!

    What are your future projects?
I'm working a lot on ebooks at the moment! That includes "GFD: Persona", "Boys Of Widow Lake: Depths Of Devotion", and "GFD: Nightfall"! Also, I have been putting a LOT of work into re-writing the story "Always", which I hope to have available for Christmas! As for stuff on the site, like I said...I'm not saying anything because people get mean and hate me when I do. So...new stuff is coming as fast as I can type it out! I'm always on the job, so you'll see new stuff soon!

    Featured Stories
It's time to take a closer look at the story that was used for this month's Signature Background. If you haven't already, go download the background before the month is over! This month's feature is "Save or Sacrifice" by one of the first author's to be hosted on Gay Authors, having joined all the way back in 2003. Yep, that's right, "Save or Sacrifice" was written by none other than Comicality.

Imagine this scenario. A closeted teenaged boy named Cory is an active member of his high school’s gay and lesbian support group. He’s been through all the initial emotions of discovering his sexuality. He has even formulated the steps other gay and lesbian students take towards exploring and engaging that part of their emotional lives. Cory is quite adept and experienced with meeting and having fun exercising his newly accepted sexual awareness.

A new boy enters the picture. His name is Ben, and Cory is paired with him as a kind of guide. Quickly they become best friends, inseparable. The two of them build on the connection they’ve found in each other. Their bond is strong.

That’s when it starts to go awry. Ben meets another teen, Chandler, and the two of them begin seeing each other, sometimes just the two of them, sometimes with Cory joining in on the fun. This scenario Comicality has created appears like many teen stories, until a moral dilemma arises.

This is a dilemma Cory can’t resolve, or at least doesn’t want to face.

‘Save or Sacrifice’ is the struggle we all face, one way or another, when negotiating the waters of love, betrayal, lust, and what we really want in our lives. Which is more important, passion or friendship? Is forgiveness possible when a wrong hurts another so deeply? What do we believe about the foundation of a relationship, whether it is that of a friend or a lover?

Fortunately, Comicality also gives these characters, and the reader, a mentor whose own experience gives us some of his wisdom. This kindly teacher tries to explain to Cory what he thinks may help when considering all affairs of the heart. For me this advice is the thesis of the entire story.

“But in reality, when you take away all the longing, and the sexual attraction, and the sleepless nights, and whole infatuated frenzy of being with them every second of the day…it’s what you’ve got LEFTOVER that really counts. Sometimes, what’s leftover is enough to be in love.”

And with that idea, Comicality pushes the characters, and the reader, to mull this idea. We are trapped by the moral question of what constitutes the basis of love and what truly endures within a deep friendship.

From time to time as you read the tale, you may want to lash out and scream they don’t get it. Friendship and romantic love can exist side by side, nurturing one another. Comicality doesn’t let you get away that easily. He delves deeper and challenges the characters to solve their central predicament. There are no easy paths or less painful answers. Resolution will only come when the heart is completely exposed, examined and rendered vulnerable.

Reading this story is an emotional experience that forces you to consider what matters. Don’t be afraid to dive into this pool. It’s an exploration you’ll find worthwhile.

Hope everyone has had a great week so far and is looking forward to the weekend. What better way to start it off than with brand new prompts! If you've been feeling stuck, or maybe just want to do something a little different, maybe one of these prompts will jumpstart a new idea. Don't forget, if under 1,000 words, prompt responses that are posted in GA Stories must be posted as part of a collection.

    Prompt 368 – Creative
    Tag – First Line
“You’ll get it back over my dead body!”

    Prompt 369 – Creative
    Tag – The Bully
You finally were given the position you have longed for and gone to school for. It has taken you years to realize the nay sayers and people who said you weren’t worth it were wrong. Now as you finally set into the place you want to be your past also rears its head. Your first job applicant to work under you is a name very familiar to you. In fact, it was the bully who made your life a living hell through your school years. Now, their future is in your hands. Are you able to forget the past or is the bully about to get a taste of their own medicine?

Normally I'd share the previous prompt response right now, but I'll get to that in a minute. This week we also have the next Poetry Prompt to share!

    Poetry Prompt #3

Write two stanzas of lyrics. Follow the 8-syllable/6-syllable pattern as you go. Base it on the first emotions you remember having when you woke up this morning. This is practice, so it is up to you if you wish to incorporate rhymes, and feel free to make the poem humorous if you like. For more information on this poetry prompt, visit the thread!

This week I decided to feature a couple of the previous Poetry Prompt Responses, one set by Aditus and the other by Dolores Esteban:

If you want to leave Aditus a review, you can leave it here.

If you want to leave Dolores a review, you can leave it here.

    Weekly Wrap Up
I hope everyone had a happy and safe Halloween. Did you get lots of Trick-or-Treaters or did you hide from the ghosts and goblins that were prowling around the streets? For those who are in a place who practice Daylight Savings Time, did you remember to set your clocks back an hour before you went to bed?

We started out the week with the CSR Discussion Day. Cia asked a few of the authors for this month some Halloween related questions. The answers got really interesting and are definitely worth a look, if you haven't already done so, check it out and feel free to leave a comment.

Tuesday's are a great time to look at what is offered in the Premium section of Gay Authors. This week was no different as we featured "Hard Knocks", the final story in DKstories's "Waiting For The Sign" Trilogy. If you're interested in helping to support GA, there's also information on how to become a Premium Subscriber.

Myr joined us on the blog on Wednesday with this month's Tech blog! With the upgrade that will be coming to the forum software in coming months, many members might be wondering what it means for them personally and what they can do to help. Myr gave a lot of great information so make sure to check it out!

If you're stuck on a story or just maybe wanting a break from what you're normally working on, check out Friday's Prompt feature. Not only were there two new prompts for you to choose from, but we also featured a previous prompt response from Carlos H.

    Memorial
    Rest in Peace

It recently came to our attention that long time member and Classic Author, Jack Scribe passed away earlier this year. Jack joined Gay Authors in June 2006 and since then has posted 19 stories, including the popular Splash Trilogy as well as the Las Vegas Trilogy. Not only was he a popular author on-site, but many members considered him a friend. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, Jack.

Hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend so far. Monday will be here before we know it, but before that happens, lets take a look at what happened this week in the GA News Blog, cause there's been quite a bit to look back at.

Due to last weeks takeover of the blog due to an issue with story ratings, Cia did a re-run on Monday of her review of the Signature Author Background story, Joined by Blood. If you haven't read the story, why not pop by the blog and see if it might interest you. If you have read it, feel free to stop by and share your own thoughts.

On Tuesday we welcomed back our Premium Tuesday blog and featured Lugh's story, Binding. If you're interested in helping to support Gay Authors, and would like access to some extra story content as well, check it out. Not only is there some info about Lugh's story, but there's also some information on how to become a Premium Subscriber.

Wednesday continued Signature Week with Cia's interview with Renee Stevens about her story "Joined by Blood". Curious as to where the title came from? Maybe you want to know, Why vampires? Cia asks that and more during the interview, so check it out.

On Friday we had two new prompts from the Prompt Guru, Comicfan. If you've been feeling stuck or just want to take a short break from the norm, or maybe you're dipping your fingers into writing for the first time, the prompts are a great writing exercise. This week we featured an older prompt response from Sasha Distan, so check it out!

Normally we don't have a Saturday post, but this week we had the unpleasant task of informing the GA Membership that we had confirmed the passing of long-time member and Classic Author, Jack Scribe who passed away earlier this year. Rest in Peace, Jack.

I hope everyone has had a great week up until this point and that everyone has a wonderful weekend as well. Friday has once again graced us with it's presence and with it we have two more prompts from the prompt guru, Comicfan. As always, we're also sharing a previous prompt response. Don't forget, if either of these prompts trigger a response from you, share it in the prompt forum and maybe you'll see yours featured next week!

    Prompt 364 – Creative
    Tag – First Line
“That is the last time I am telling you anything!”

    Prompt 365 – Creative
    Tag – The Children
Two weeks ago a new strain of virus was found to be breaking out across the world. The very old and they very young seemed to be the only ones affected. Every adult over the age of sixty five that developed the virus died painfully within two days. The children seemed to spike after three days and recover,. However, a week after their release from the hospital people all over are noticing a major change in the children. What is wrong with the children?

Since there wasn't much response to last week's prompts, I looked a little further back and found this response from Sasha Distan, from Prompt #352:

Vega-5 is the place where dreams do come true, even the ones you didn’t know you had. It said so, right on the brochure.

Bernat Arnad had little hope of his own dreams coming true but there was hope, and that was something to hold on to even if he did have to learn to let go first.

    Weekly Wrap Up
Wow, what a week! This week was supposed to be Signature Week, but due to the situation regarding Google Adsense, Signature Week was put on pause and moved to next week. As a reminder of what I'm talking about, on Monday, our Signature review was taken over part way through the day to feature an important site notice regarding ratings being given to stories. GayAuthors was dinged by Google Adsense for a story that was rated as Everyone but had content that was considered to be unacceptable on pages where Google Adsense was in use. To ensure we keep receiving revenue from Google Adsense, all authors have been asked to check their stories, especially those rated as "Everyone" or "Teen", for content and change the rating as necessary. For more information, including the content requirements for the rating scale, please check out Monday's blog post.

On Friday, the blog returned to normal with the weekly Prompt Me blog post in which we were provided with two new prompts from the prompt guru comicfan. If you're in the mood to write a Halloween themed prompt response, then these prompts are definitely for you! For our featured prompt, I featured ColumbusGuy's response to Prompt #360!

Let's see what Comicfan has for us this week!

Every year the local county throws a fair. It is always a lot of food, crafts, and things to buy. This year a carnival has been added to the fair and the whole mood has changed. People seem to be attracted the dark tents, loud noises, and wild rides. Is this just a new addition or has something sinister come to the local fair this year?

We only had a couple responses last week, I decided to share Valkyrie71's response to Prompt #358:
