  1. Harvard Westlake isn't a public school with rigid, "the five year old brought a plastic knife to school to cut his apple, let's suspend him under our no tolerance of weapons policy" type policies. They care about their kids, and not just because they are paying $30k a year or have powerful parents, they care about their scholarship kids too. They use common sense and compassion when dealing with their kids. When a kid melts down like Will did their inclination isn't to pile on but to look for ways to help. The school also understands the pressure they put on kids and that a lot of the kids parents put on them and they look for signs of a kid cracking and buckling and they work hard to prevent that and help the kids. The private schools of the 1990's and on aren't the private schools that inspired Catcher in The Rye and A Separate Peace for a lot of reasons.

  4. Best ever version of Rule Britannia. The last night of The Proms is something everyone should experience at least once. When Britain first, at heaven’s command, Arose from out the azure main, Arose, arose, arose from out the azure main. This was the charter, the charter of the land, And guardian angels sang the strain. Rule Britannia! Britannia rule the waves. Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. Rule Britannia! Britannia rule the waves. Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. The nations not so blest as thee, Must in their turn to tyrants fall, Must in their turn, must in their turn, To tyrants fall, While thou shall flourish, Shall flourish great and free, The dread and envy of them all. Chorus. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke. More dreadful, more dreadful From each foreign stroke. Loud blast above us, loud blast that tears the skies, Serves but to root thy native oak. Chorus. Thee haughty tyrants ne’er shall tame, All their attempts to bend thee down, All their attempts, all their attempts To bend thee down, Will but arouse thy generous flame. But work their woe and thy renown. Chorus. To thee belongs the rural reign, Thy cities shall with commerce shine, Thy cities shall, thy cities shall With commerce shine. All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles thine. Chorus. The muses still, with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coast repair, Shall to thy happy coast, Thy happy coasts repair, Best isle of beauty, With matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. Chorus.
  5. I think you grossly misunderstand the lunch duty of the 9th graders. They aren't bus boys or server ladies, they are monitors, they get to be in charge, they are telling their peers and the younger kids to pick up their crap. Do they have to pick up stuff themselves? Not really, not any more than the faculty members with their Maters and PhDs have to, they are supervising the people to get the job done.

    Chapter 43

Sweet chapter. It is especially nice to see Will in a comfortable friendship with someone and no sexual or romantic tensions. They can just be friends and do what 14 year olds do.
  7. For the Glorious First of June!
  8. No, H-W would not force Raine to do anything and I am not sure they could if they wanted to, CA has very strict, complicated laws in that area. And there were very, very few protests going on at clinics in CA and then it was at CLINICS, not the kind of place a H-W student would go, they'd be at Cedars-Sinai or UCLA and no one would ever know. It is one thing for the anti-abortion crowd in a place where there are few clinics to protest and even then it is seldom an every day thing, it is usually for a short time for the cameras. But in CA there are so many options, so many places and clinics, any protest would be short and merely symbolic. It isn't much of an issue in CA, especially So Cal. CA had laws allowing abortion before the Roe decision.
  9. Maybe Beau will be Will's soul mate and we could see Brad and Elizabeth as in-laws.

    Chapter 42

Oh Mark, I am so disappointed...... The Cliff House hasn't had good food since 1947 at least! Interesting chapter all the psychological interplay and the baby cliffhanger at the end. Have a great Memorial Day!
  11. Don't be bitter hun, it is a BAD color on you
  12. I've never really heard of IM5, although I do know one member, Gabriel Morales from The Perfect Game, but I thought this was sweet.
  13. Tom Cruise on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
  14. I love the movie too not just because it was a great movie, but because it addressed mixed race problems and racism before it was popular to do so. Another great old China movie was 55 Days at Peking.
  15. Maybe JJ is just an ass burger

    Chapter 41

I thought this was interesting, "If we were an airline, we’d all be paying for extra suitcases." Did that happen in 2000? Were airlines charging extra for bags already? The only reason it struck me was the Arbour team is so good on cultural references. Anyway, the even more interesting part is that I can feel "Paternity" drawing to a close, and a bunch of new story lines opening up... Robbie's niece and nephew, Jeff's paternity (although that might be too coincidental), Will's ongoing story alone, the unresolved Mrs. Danfield's next move, Jeff's plans for getting Wade.... I also found interesting all the old names dredged up, Bitty, Jake, Billy, Frank, Robbie's mother, Carson, Sam.... and potential future important names like Tony, although I am not Tony's biggest fan. I think Will can do better. Maybe we can see Ryan at some point in an Adam Phillips/Dan Kincaid role.
  21. Oh please...... THINK people..... Older white guy..... younger Asian guy.... it is obviously the Green Horney.
  22. What he has in common with his family is that they are his family. Kids don't just bond with family members who share common interests, they bond over all kinds of things. But all that aside, we really haven't seen enough of JJ to know what kind of bonds he does and does not have because he has never narrated and has been a peripheral character at best.
  23. How about we walk the entire length of The Great Wall Buffet and call it even Steven.
  24. It seems to me you are assuming facts not in evidence. The is only so much room in a story. Since JJ has never been a narrator we only see glimpses of his day to day life and then they are side distractions to the main story and characters.
