  1. This was a nice way to cap off the evening.

    Part 4

So heavy. Looking forward to more!
  3. Today I bring to you French composer Edgard Varèse's Ameriques, a fascinating early work inspired by his travels in America. Varèse placed heavy emphasis on timbre and rhythm in his music, thinking about music as 'organized sound', a crystallization of sonic masses into a greater whole.

Thanks for reading, gentlemen. I'm glad you liked it!

It comes wrapped in banality And yet is oh so tender and complex. There is so much to appreciate, If only you could see it through the right lens. Most people wouldn't give a second look, But me? My love flows softly, in little ripples Not large crashing waves, Over a pond of infinite stillness.
  6. Kaija Saariaho isn't a dead composer, but I'm feeling this mood today.

My younger brother had a surprise kid dropped on him when the kid was eleven. He hasn't talked about it with me much, but I will be drawing on those experiences a little to colour things as this goes forward.

Indeed. Thanks for reading and commenting!
  11. Here's an article on Medtner, providing some perspective on why he's not more widely known: https://www.esm.rochester.edu/blog/2013/10/why-medtner-matters/
  12. March 27, 2022 It’s snowing today. A late March rager, going out like a Lion. I haven’t written here since Bobby’s birthday because I just didn’t feel like it while we were relaxing, holed up in his Manhattan condo. We made love a lot the past week, alternating roles, learning and adapting to this new chapter in our sexual connection. It was so good, so fucking right that it makes me feel like crying just thinking about it. There is a part of me that just doesn’t understand how
  13. Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951) was a Russian composer of Volga German origins. While he languished in obscurity following his death, he is now starting to be recognized as one of the most significant Russian composers for the piano. His many Fairy Tales for piano are lovely, evocative pieces, including this delight:
  14. In honour of my guitar-playing brother's birthday, some Robert de Visée (though on theorbo, not guitar):
  15. Maybe an odd selection for Boxing Day, but here it is nonetheless: Paul Hindemith's Chamber Music #1
  16. March 18, 2022 It’s Bobby’s birthday today. We didn’t get the day off work, but that’s no big deal. I haven’t written much lately because I’ve been busy, and really there hasn’t been much to say. Rogue is still here. Still! Jesus fucking Christ! But I’m not letting it get to me anymore, not really. She’s left Bobby and me alone since he had his fight with her. I’m not sure if that’s her way of stepping away from their friendship, or if she’s just trying to give him some space b

    Chapter 1

I've missed your writing, so it is wonderful to hear from you. I can totally understand how the holidays can bring up those feelings of the expectations society and family (and ourselves) put upon us. I've found this time of year difficult for the last two decades, essentially since coming out. Relationships make things both easier and harder, don't they? But loneliness is the toughest feeling of all. I hope your journey towards being at peace with yourself and your status goes well.
  18. J.S. Bach's monumental Christmas Oratorio. It was intended to be performed in 6 sections over several feast days, so this is a big listen but definitely worth it. Or worth coming back to!
  19. Let's get medieval!
  20. A short, lyrical Prelude from Anatoly Lyadov, master of the miniature.
  21. Glinka's music is an oeuvre that I haven't explored very much. Thanks for sharing this delight!
  22. It keeps me busy and at least marginally fit, that's for sure. Serious training is like peeling back the layers of an infinite onion. Every time you think you have discovered something or figured something out or accomplished something, there is so much more to master. It always leaves me feeling simultaneously inadequate and driven to dive deeper.
  23. I've been okay, just a lot of things keeping me away from spending much time reading and writing. Trying to make some space for it in my life again, so you should see me more often, at least in the near future.
  24. Now for something a little happier to cheer your day up - a mid-career Haydn symphony:
  25. I agree it is a better performance, I've listened to it before. There's just something about live performances, though and being able to watch the pianist's hands that made me want to share the live video.
