Partially correct. All transparent materials will reflect some light at some frequencies. It is the material on the backing of the transparent object that determines what is reflected and what is absorbed. For other types of reflectors (non-transparent metals, mostly), it is the chemical composition that determines what frequencies are reflected and what is absorbed. Outside of using material substances, using electromagnetism or gravity to reflect and/or bend photons is much more efficient.

I wonder... If I understand the near invisibility of Irik's people, why not fortify that ability so that all light passes around the protected body? It becomes a lensing effect, exactly how light passes around a black hole. Done properly, it should apply to electrons as well as photons.

I hope Jamie remembers this part. Mirrors that reflect visible light will not work against infrared (heat), X-Ray, or Gamma-Ray emissions. It is a given that the ancients were adept at producing Lasers at all frequencies.

This was the very reason I speculated that the evil/dark mages were in some sort of a CNC. Extrapolating from Snave's speculations, the evolved humans, the mages, can manipulate the ancient's power sources without using the ancient's machines. This is what would make the mages very dangerous to "normal" humans. It also suggests the type of power that the ancients used. It would not be fusion, considering the length of time that has passed and the functionality has not ceased or diminished.

There are several things we have discovered in this chapter. Lodda and Porvus, by inference Urvan, have learned the written language of the ancients. At least enough to know what some of the various sensors report in the Comm Rooms of the towers. That they know this, suggests that there are technical manuals laying about. Because Porvus could see that someone entered the Comm Room of the tower that Jamie & Company are in, suggests that the place Porvus is in is a central Comm Room. Be it another tower or something else. The nature of the almost instant electrical storm, suggests that the ancients had an extremely fine, precise, and absolute weather control technology. This also suggests that the place that Porvus was in was more of a Command & Control Center than a mere comm room. Lastly, Jamie discovers, even if he does not want to admit it, that the magic wagons do indeed float in the transport tubes, maglev transports.

That's always been a real question of serious science fiction. Could we recognize other intelligent carbon-based life? If not, how would we recognize life forms based on something other than carbon?

I don't have a clue as to what you plan on having Mac do, Bill. Yet, I could see Mac and Devin working on some kind of community service project. Universities are kinda big on that. Especially if it has nothing to do with their majors. Shows that they are willing to do stuff outside of their chosen professions.
