Ya got me there! I haven't had a Windows program (let alone the OS) since 2004. Even my wife had me format her HD and put a Linux distro on her system (she had XP before it timed out). Enough of this, I think... I did like this chapter. Geology is one of my interests, so looking for Obsidian at Lava Beds was fun!

I remember watching that show. Fascinating!... I had to fight with my sisters though. They always wanted to watch something else.

Since Google Maps are a function of internet browsers, yes, it is accessible. For a couple of years, I had 3D ability. Similar to Google Earth but more limited. That capability was taken away last year. It's kinda funny that Google would do this, since they designed Chrome and the Opera browser uses the Chrome engine.

It is. Of all the obsidians, Fire is the most beautiful and the most rare.

True but there is also that lava bed in Arizona where a few Fire Obsidians have been found... I won't mention Yellowstone... Grrr... A couple of years ago, Google stopped support for those of us that run a Linux box. Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

This was my 4th time in reading this story (but the first time reading on GA). I hope I left enough good feedback (without giving away the plot) for others who may be reading this for the first time.

Yes, this does protect the guys from the courts. Tom's statement at the end was a direct shot at the notion of internment camps that happened in WWII. A very sad time in our country.

I was a Marine radiotelegrapher, back in the days when telegraphy was still in use. @JamesSavik, your use of military radio protocol throughout this story has been outstanding! That's the nicest thing I can say about this chapter.

So many of us do tend to take "trophies" from these places, it makes me shake my head that anything is left. Yes, I'm as guilty as some of you!

@JamesSavik has really made this war into something believable. So many separate pieces are being put into play that we, the reader, can see the overview! Simply wonderful writing.

In a way, it is no different than committing harakiri for a disgraceful act. As a dedicated warrior, the general failed in his attempt to keep the US safe. Hence the suicide.

Mostly correct. There are a lot of refineries in the San Pedro, Ca. area. Of course, I would expect those boomers to have that targeted. Some smaller refineries in Utah and Wyoming - but negligible on a national scale.

The way this is going, I don't hold out a lot of hope for the west coast. The problem is... What will the President do about retaliation? On top of this sad scenario, we have the boys preparing for an all-out war. You never know how you are going to act/react if it comes to an outright firefight. It's not easy for most of us who are trained for such things. It's scary and downright frightening. The aftermath isn't much good either! -
Besides the personal threat of these raiders, we now have the Chinese on the move. None of this bodes well!
