I think what Graeme said was poignant and beautiful and important. For me, the issue would not have been the orientation, but the cheating. That I could not forgive. Even if your sexuality changes, or someone decides not to live their life with the sexuality they'd pretended was true, going behind your spouse's back is never an acceptable answer. I'd be more understanding of the couple in the article if he'd not cheated, and come out to her, and they'd remained friends (or even lived together for the sake of children/family/etc) but aid their sexual relationship was over. In my universe, cheating on someone is just never OK.

I don't make light of how music inspires me, and I have an entire collection of stories based upon the lyrics of specific country songs. I think everyone in inspired, one way or another, by the books they read, but though I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett, my writing style and themes are completely different. The books I find most inspiring and generally ones I have which don't reflect the rest of my collection, such as The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon by Tom Spanbauer. But I particularly like reading what my characters read. When I wrote Tiger Winter I bought second hand and read a lot of the historical exploration account which Emmett is so fond of, and that was really interesting. I now know far more about whale hunting than I ever thought I would.

Yes, it's a salmon. Salmon feature pretty heavily in all the bear stories come to think of it. It's there for the polar bear aspect, and for a specific important moment that will materialise later on.
