Graham Greene—the Oscar-nominated Canadian actor best known for his role as Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves—has died at the age of 73. He passed away peacefully in Stratford, Ontario, on September 1, 2025, after a lengthy illness, with his wife Hilary Blackmore at his side.
Greene was a proud member of the Oneida Nation and a trailblazer for Indigenous representation in Hollywood. His career spanned decades, with memorable roles in The Green Mile, Thunderheart, Maverick, and Wind River, as well as television appearances in Northern Exposure, Longmire, Tulsa King, and The Last of Us.
He was not only a gifted performer but also a deeply respected figure in Canadian arts, honored with a Grammy, Gemini, and Canadian Screen Award, and appointed to the Order of Canada in 2015.
Lou Diamond Phillips called him “an Actor’s Actor… one of the wittiest, wiliest, warmest people I’ve ever known. Iconic and Legendary”.
