Carter's Shadow, if you are interested, gives the background to this character, as it is set from West's perspective. Again not needed to read for this one, but will help give answers... plus it is one of my best books of my earlier work.

Peter's carer nature has been explored a lot in the later books, I like that I have a chance to go back and show where it came from. Peter's the protector of the family, the one who puts people back together. I love him for it, hands down one of my favorite characters to write.

He's one of the older generation of Northern Cross, who was with Denton when things happened in the late 70's early 80's. We will get into that in a chapter or two when Walter explains the history of the Cross and Thomas Highmore. Hate distilled by years, fear, and a loathing. It's easy to see this kind of hate as an American problem, but it's everywhere, and it's been lying dormant, quiet, but not fully defeated. We're seeing it with Tommy Robinson's lot in the UK, across Europe it's raising it's dark head. The old teaching the young. Brick will get his. Walter will want a word with his old classmate eventually.

I wrote a bit about this in Carter's Run, when Peter was looking after Ned. Aside from Andrew, Peter was the one who knew how to handle Will's breakdowns. Five years of life with Will taught Peter a lot, it's part of what makes him so effective with the Sprogs, he's been a carer most of his life. First Will, then Jason, on to Jacob then Ned. His superpower, making nightmares stop.
