It's been said that suffering builds character. And there are few that know suffering better than young Justin. Only 14 years old, he has found an easy way out. A suicidal tendency that he is hoping will bring an end to his misery. But when he meets a mysterious boy at the end of Navy Pier one dark evening...he is given an alternative. One that will give him purpose, and set in motion the events that will lead to his ultimate destiny....in a world not like our own.

Chad led me around more dark corners and twists and turns that I had never seen before. I began to wonder if we were walking in circles, or if my mind was too busy trying to redesign its whole concept of truth and reality, as his conversation destroyed one barrier of comfort after another. "Hmmm...so...what is Comicality? Really." "What do you mean?" "I mean...like...is he a 'perfect' vampire?" I asked. "There is no such thing as far as I know. In the most ancient of scriptures, the i

Char went back to the corner of the room, and Becca handed her the clipboard as the two of them traded places. Tim was looking on with great interest, as she approached me. I began to worry about exactly what she was going to find inside of my mind, what she was going to bring to the surface in front of these other people. But I attempted to relax anyway. The quicker I get this over with, the better. Becca put her hands on either side of my head, her middle fingers resting lightly on my tem

The clerk suddenly made an attempt to scamper away from me in desperation, but it was all in vain, and there were no more games to be played. My body shivered with hunger, and I felt my hand wrap itself tightly around the clerk's leg. I dragged him, kicking and screaming behind the counter, and then dropped myself down on top of him in a flash! He kicked and struggled, but my strength overpowered him easily. He screamed and pleaded, but my hunger stopped his cries from becoming anything more t

"Like what you see, Justin? I told you you'd be surprised." Trevor grinned. "I've been tracking this little delinquent for quite some time now. I was going to make a meal of him myself, but when I saw what little secrets he was hiding in that pea sized brain of his, I thought it would only be right to let you do the honors. It appears you two have a bit of a history together?" "How...how...?" "He always takes this shortcut late at night, especially on the weekends. I know his routine, it

It was quite possibly the worst pain that I had experienced since my crossover. My stomach had collapsed completely and I could barely breathe at all. My eyes were burning painfully, drying out from the lack of fluids, the friction of my eyelids scratching my pupils almost every time I blinked. My mouth was dry, as though it were full of sand. My body felt twisted and bruised from the inside, and my heartbeat was slowing down. I could detect it because it hurt every time it contracted. I was d

"Protection? From what? From who?" "Now, Justin, don't start getting all flustered and fidgety on me. For right now it's JUST a security measure. There are a lot of vampires out there who want to be able to do what you can do. Your extra is probably one of the most rare and most powerful of all the extras we've ever encountered as a species. Others, whether their intentions are good or bad, will come looking for you. You have the ability to become a 'perfect' vampire, and that can make you b

I was a bit disturbed by the whole story. I had never even imagined someone so sweet, so innocent, could have been the victim of such a disgusting act. Even less, I never thought him capable of committing three murders. Not an 11 year old boy. What was going on inside of his head at that moment? What has to give way in order for you to react so violently? That's when it struck me...this kid...could have just as easily have been me. Or anyone for that matter. I thought back to all of the times t

"You a brand new member of the family, boy?" One of them said to me, stepping closer. Taryn was quick to step back, taking me with him. "Jumpy, aren't we? I ain't gonna bite ya...yet." He grinned. "Who or WHAT the hell are you supposed to be?" I asked. I was hoping that the words would cover my nervous jitters, but my voice betrayed me. It shook and cracked, letting them know that I was just as scared of this whole situation as they wanted me to be. Taryn slid his foot back another step,

I watched silently that night, as did the others, while the dirty deed took place. Was I the only one holding my breath? I was nervous as hell. However, I must admit that I somehow never doubted his abilities for a second. After all the things I had heard about how good he was at it, I guess I was just excited to see him in action for the first time. Dion, Max, Taryn, Trevor, and Jenna stood with me outside on North Michigan Avenue, watching the rich citizens and happy-go-lucky tourists strolli

I followed behind Trevor, but not too closely, and made it back in one piece. Thank goodness everyone was turning in for the night. I didn't want to meet their accusing eyes, not tonight. I did make it back to the van and saw Taryn getting ready for bed. I crept quietly through the door and he didn't hear me come in. "Hey" I said weakly. "JUSTIN!" He jumped over the bed and ran over to give me a big hug. "I thought I had lost you! I thought you'd never want to speak to me again." He began ki

Dion took me to a small stone pedestal in the middle of the park, and we both climbed on top of it. "What are we doing up here?" I said. I was only standing about a foot and a half off of the ground, but it was a little embarrassing. I felt like I was on display or something, for the whole world to judge me. He could see my discomfort, and told me to forget about it. "Do you honestly think you'll ever see any of these people ever again? To hell with them, you live your life, they live there'

On our arrival back at the lot, walking hand in hand, still giddy and laughing girlishly at one another, Trevor met us at the gate. We dropped hands immidiately and stopped dead in our tracks for a quick second, like two animals taking precautions against possible danger. He stood right in front of us, forcing us to notice him. "Well, well, well, if it isn't sleeping beauty." He had a wide grin on his face that looked innocent enough, but I could already tell that there was a demonic mischief b

It wasn't like waking up from a dream, it wasn't like the peaceful opening of your eyes after a long night's slumber...this was different. This was pain. Unbearable, agonizing pain. I couldn't even tell where or when it started, I just know that it continued to intensify, more and more by the second, FORCING me into consciousness. I might have slept forever it seemed, but that suffering was so incredible that it brought me back from the dead just to hear me scream. However, when I finally did o

We stopped to hang for a while on the bridge, watching the traffic pass frantically beneath us. The others made noise, whooped and hollered, and were basically being kids. Taryn and I of course, while still practically a part of the group, kept to ourselves. We were in our own little world, away from everything else. We didn't even notice the others until one of them laughed or screamed loud enough to be ignored. But we just talked quietly, about the moon and the stars, about the beauty of the

I Left the hospital that night after visiting hours, about 8 PM, wondering if it was all a lie. If Taryn was just saying anything and everything he could to keep me from jumping a few days ago. Maybe he was a liar, maybe even this mysterious stranger, gorgeous and innocent and serene as he seemed, was just as rotten to the core as everybody else. And to think...I actually fell for it. What an idiot I am. I was actually believing in sunrises and laughter and falling leaves for goodness sakes. I

Tonight I was beyond tempted, more than ever before. This was no longer an empty threat, no longer an idea in the dark recesses of my mind...this empty feeling inside of me had taken over, and my thoughts of suicide were now a reality. It was about 3 AM, and even though Navy Pier was closed at midnight, getting out there was no problem at that time of morning. It was so quiet, so peaceful. I believe that 3 AM is the darkest time of night by far, the perfect balancing point between sunset and su

I sit and listen to them at lunch. Always wishing that I could still feel as comfortable as I'm 'supposed' to feel around them. Four of my best friends in the whole world. Rob, Gary, Alex, and Rachael. We've been the closest of friends since we were old enough to know what a friend was. We all lived in the same neighborhood, grew up at the same time, played the same games...it was so much fun. So why is it that, suddenly at 14, I feel so different from the rest of them? So alienated from their w

Ryan and Sean were already giggling about something in private by the time they came to join Cody and me at the table. In fact, I could have sworn that I saw Ryan blush a little bit from the interaction. Whatever it was that they were talking about...it gave birth to this empty...angry feeling in the pit of my stomach. And the muscles tightened up inside as I tried valiantly to cover it up and keep it from showing in front of them when they sat down. Cody wasn't so successful in hiding his

Slowly regaining consciousness from a restless night's sleep was an exhausting experience. I didn't even want to open my eyes as I blindly felt around for the snooze button on my alarm clock. Not finding it right away provided JUST enough frustration to keep me from wanting to go back to sleep. So instead of maintaining some level of comfort that would let me drift off for another ten minutes or so...I ended up opening my eyes and angrily slapping my clock off of the dresser, and being too
