I enjoyed this chapter immensely. It seemed like both men were making part of a homeward journey in a way.

On my vacation, I’ve climbed mountains and seen some fantastic sights. But Matthew is climbing greater and more difficult mountains in his therapy and work. Perhaps he too will see some fantastic and unexpectedly beautiful things. But even if he doesn’t, Matthew will have ascended to a new and healthier place.

Matthew made it back to New York. His mom is perceptive: his experience isn’t something you just get over. I wonder if or how he will seek some counsel and advice. Andrew is also going to need good counsel about how - or if - to get over Matt. Great chapter!

I read this and felt empty with sadness, with resignation, and with recognition. I wanted to weep.

My gut felt Matthew’s apprehension, his anticipation, his fear and his disappointment. I cannot help sharing in the emotional roller coaster ride this expedition to Istanbul must be. There is a crumb of satisfaction knowing Ahmet is safe; a crust of gratitude that he can be happy in at least some form. But what will Matthew make of the emptiness and ache that is left behind in his own heart? I’m left here in my rocking chair, staring into space and wondering.

Andrew’s chastisement from the powers of government were expected and remarkably restrained. Yet even so, it must have stung. Back on the island, I felt delighted to watch Matt rediscover something of himself, and of his own humanity. You painted that really well. It’s also clear and evident that Andrew and Maeve have fallen for Matt, and so have I. There’s excitement and fear for him in my heart as he prepares for his next adventure. You have spun this tale masterfully.

In this chapter, I can feel Matt’s fear, anxiety and tension at the new situation in which he finds himself. Andrew is an alien being to Matt, it seems. In fact, the island could feel like another planet to him. The beautiful difference is Maeve, who knows far more than Andrew how to get under Matt’s guard. This is a beautiful warm chapter, in contrast to the cold and gray weather outside the house.

Matt is handed over to a world that he isn’t expecting in this chapter. That fascinated me throughout this. Davis seemed like a friend, but Matt’s inner voice was sounding wisdom: they’re not your friends. What’s also unexpected was Andrew’s absence - how jarring it must have been for Matt to be greeted by Maeve. That must have added another layer of disquiet and mystery. My heart goes out to him, who doesn’t yet realize where he truly is.

Jonathan and David. That’s an apt description, and if it’s one the staff are using, it may be that senior decision-makers will take note. Ed’s gift is heartfelt and beautiful. Liam may learn more about the outside world from his trips with Aiden, but Ed has taught him about his own heart. What a lovely chapter.

What a chapter! Ahmet was spared, and where there is life there may be hope. For Matthew, there is fear and unknowing. Needless to say, I’m awaiting the next chapter with much anticipation. This one was excellent!

I’m glad Number 4 connected with you. I spent the greater part of an afternoon just watching that field, and the big bright butterflies that sailed over it. Without all that mowing, perhaps more and more can share that experience. I’m happy you were able to, at least. Thanks so very much for your thoughts!

They were in a lonely lake in northern New England. There had been nesting pairs on that lake every summer I visited — until last summer. I was heartbroken to think a predator had gotten them. But this year, they were back.

Thank you very much.

Thank you for joining me on my vacation walks. It took me a long time to piece together snapshots from my notes. I’m grateful for your nudge in that task. That granite outcrop in the meadow was fun for us kids at age seven or eight; and it parroted back my adolescent rage at age 16. It’s still a beautiful place. Thanks for the encouraging words and for enjoying these moments from high summer.

Thank you very much for joining me in wonder at the hermit thrush in number 3. Even this remarkable link doesn’t do it justice. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Hermit_Thrush/sounds It is a moment I’ll not soon forget. Having my quiet reading interrupted by coyote song is another. Thanks again!

1. A year ago, there were none to be seen. They’d disappeared, like so many things fondly remembered. But this year, joy of joys, there were three of them, bobbing on the sparkling water under the warm June sun. Beneath clear June skies three loons, parents and their chick, float and dive, fishing in cold waters that shimmer with light that lasts forever. ~ ~ ~ 2. Not far from the house is a wide hayfield

I feel both the tension in Andy’s impulsive decision, and the excitement in the possibility that Matt might wind up free. Like the storm outside Andy’s home roiled the sea, this chapter stirred my heart. What happened to Matt? To Ahmed? And what is to be learned from whatever Matt might choose to tell? Finally, my head is filled with Dante and his possible future. Can he ever truly leave Mr Black, or will he depart not for retirement but with a bullet in the back of his head? I will be itching for the next chapter to appear!

Happy Birthday, KBois! What a fantastic birthday poem!

This chapter could be titled: “Uh-oh.” Ahmet and Matt are caught in the web of a deadly spider. Andrew is walking back into a world of fiction writing he left behind for something more stimulating. I can see and feel storm clouds gathering.

I read this chapter with a sadness in my heart. Matt accedes to fate, knowing the alternatives are worse. That cannot make what he experiences any less bitter. For Andrew, his purposefulness and industry seem tinged with regret and another kind of sadness, despite his being back in the safety of home. You’ve written this really well. These feelings jump off the page.

Oh, my, what a series of misses. And yet, how hard for those who loved the woman in the van. They’ll never know if she could have been saved.

This is heartbreaking to read. Yet Blue may be learning to cope. At the same time, we learn a lot about Blue.

How deeply dark the last line is: The ship is where he keeps his secrets. How many people are privy to those secrets? How quickly can those secrets be erased forever at the bark of a gun? And how long will it be until Matt and the other young men he never meets have erased themselves in the course of their captivity? This is a chilling and sad chapter.

Mr. Black is about as chilling an individual as I could imagine. His heart appears to be made of stone, or maybe cold, hard cash. How much did he profit from the auction, I wonder? While Andrew appears to be safe for the moment, Matt is headed off into a shadowed and unhappy existence. One doubts it will be nicer than what he had before he was captured, as Black implies. Another engrossing chapter - You have me wanting more.

I’ve been away in the deep forests with no signal. Now I’ve caught up! I remain riveted. I can feel the tension in those who love Andrew: Maeve, Robert and Doreen share my misgivings. Andrew himself must be half-thrilled at the culmination of his covert inquiries, and half-petrified at the danger he is running. This is a fantastic story!
