Once Dorian knew of the McKinney families actions as Levi said there was no point in keeping him alive. He would have presented a problem for the family since they’d lost control of him. With how powerful they were, most if not all the wolves would reluctantly or otherwise follow out of caution. The pack members have their livelihood to consider and the McKinney’s ultimately were their employer. As Dorian said, the family played the long game. They most likely had contingency plans if the alpha became aware of what was happening. Levi underestimated Dorian’s intelligence and his ability to strategize beyond the short term. He also failed to find the cameras in his hour long search of the office before calling for help.
Remember, when the call was made for anyone wishing to lead to step forward, no one stood. Even the leader of the Hunters didn’t make a move to challenge Levi. In the hierarchy of wolves, the lower ranks tend to follow like sheep. Levi, though not well liked, was viewed as an accomplished leader. Through all the expansion of the pack, no one challenged Dorian for leadership to put a stop to the territorial ambitions even though he made plenty of enemies.
No Lycan Council laws were broken, except possibly for Dorian’s murder. Levi used underhanded tactics to get Dorian to challenge others, but they were all legal fights that resulted in both packs going to the victor. As Levi pointed out when the Shasta Pack was taken, he’d submitted the merger paperwork with the Council as soon as their alpha was dead. If other alphas at the Congress found out about the poisoning, there’s no way of knowing how they would react. If Pit River willingly accepted Levi as their alpha, it’s an internal decision that would not affect the Council or Congress. The most someone could do is challenge him for leadership and odds are, the family would have some plan for winning.
Yes, it was predictable that Levi was the bad guy. I did consider changes to that, but was happy with the story as the way it unfolded in my mind. Dorian’s trust in his “friend” while misplaced was based on how he perceived the world around him. It was both emotional and physical. For Levi’s part, he could be a good friend when it suited him and he did have feelings for Dorian in his own way. But he didn’t have the physical strength to fight guys like Dorian. A wealthy runt with a strong mind who knew how I find protection until he became powerful enough that his strength didn’t need to be physical.
Dorian going outside the pack to Ethan and Aiden, instead of finding someone within to confide in was based on the McKinney’s hold on everyone. No matter how loyal he thought someone might be, there was a chance, a risk the family could have their claws embedded in that person. For Dorian that meant enlisting the assistance of the men who’d helped put things right at the Council.
