The Chippewa have a legend, regarding a young man named Pukawiss. His father was a human chieftain, but his mother was a forest spirit. He wouldn't hunt, swim, run in footraces, or do any other "manly" things. He just liked to watch the animals in their natural surroundings. His father ignored him in favor of his younger brother, Maudjee-kawiss. Pukawiss eventually taught his tribe how to dance, based on the movements of the animals he had observed. Later, he gave up his home and became a permanent wanderer, travelling to share his knowledge with the other tribes.
