  1. Who knew the most patient person in the story was the kid with ADHD? Dustin's story is so fun to write. Thanks for the interesting thoughts on Billy's upcoming act of rebellion!
  2. So much right about these comments! The funny thing is that Billy himself doesn't even like it anymore, but he's a stubborn boy.
  3. No we didn't. It's probably better that he didn't make contact. He might have made things worse.
  4. Thanks dude! Billy does know how to press his mother's buttons, but he's not as big of a rebel as he liked to think he is. However, he does have a lot of his father in him, so anything is possible.
  5. I think one of the signs that Billy isn't feeling right is his lack of snarky comments. But as for Sarah, it seems that one of the themes of Commencement so far has been leaving the childish things of the past behind and moving forward (commencing, so to speak). Brett and Dustin have made peace, Paula's moved on from George, Joey seems to have been neutered by his father, and Sarah is trying to become a better person. But the past has a way of not letting us move on quite so easily.
  6. Why would you suspect that our Billy would ever do something stupid? When has he ever done that? Brett and Dustin working together is a scary proposition!
  7. Brett does have his moments! Nice to see a bit of peace with Brett and Dustin. But will it last?
  8. I feel bad because I have emails in my yahoo account that I want to reply to, but yahoo mail is so slow it's becoming unusable. I can't even get the new chapter sent to nifty at this point. Pathetic.
  9. I always enjoy the conversation that takes place on each chapter. That's one of the best things about publishing on GA. Seems to be some simmering discussion about Billy's ever-increasing hair length. Let's be honest, we all know eventually it's going to get cut. But I thought it might be fun to begin a little bit of speculating! So, here's the question: Who will be the one who cuts Billy's hair? A. Billy himself B. Brett C. Dustin D. Paula
  10. Check out WAR 5.8, the conversation right before Dustin kicks the crap out of Brett for some context. The ending of this chapter didn't come out of nowhere!
  11. New chapter is up, a little early, but everything was ready and tomorrow is going to be busy. So there ya go, a new chapter a few hours ahead of time! And we get to experience Brett's singing again!
  12. I pissed the bed. Yep, I’m a seventeen-year-old kid and I fucking pissed the bed last night… Again! God, I was so fucking pissed off! My dad used to say better pissed off than pissed on, well, I took care of both of those in one night! It was the night before school started. Senior year. I was so not ready to go back to school. Somehow through all of my troubles I’d managed to keep my perfect grades. I don’t know how. I guess my school wasn’t challenging
  13. I get it, my friend. Your stories are like your kids. People (even well-meaning people) who criticize your stories (even if they have good intentions) are like people who criticize your kids. And people who criticize your writing style are like people who criticize the way you raise your kids. You've got twenty years of credibility, writers (like me) who consider you their inspiration for getting into writing, and your "kids" have "grandkids" in a way. And yet, you still want to write to the best of your ability and challenge yourself to be great at what you do. I think your track record speaks for itself. Keep on doing things your way, and knowing that you continue to inspire readers and writers alike with your dedication and skill.
  14. I'm picturing Joe Pesci in Goodfellas for some reason.
  15. What's one of the top rules for writing? "Write what you know." Well, if you don't know, what better way to improve not only your writing but your life in general than by digging deeper into the nuances of your topic? Nice article as always, Tim!
  16. Only Wilfred Brimley can save him now.
  17. I'll have to check that story out!
  18. Thanks Dahawk! There's certainly a lot left for us to explore with young Mr. Smith!
  19. It was nice to see Dustin in a better place in his life! Glad to hear you are doing well and managing things in a healthy way. We'll find out what's up with Billy soon.
  20. Not sure about this one. Maybe Pastor Carl sent Nate to one before he kicked him out? Maybe you're thinking of Jerry Freemont being sent to military school? But that wasn't because he was gay.
  21. It's a secret to everybody.
  22. Very true. But there is a big difference between your dad giving you fatherly advice and your best friend telling you the same thing in a different way. Maybe this time it'll sink in?
  23. Thanks Benji! Yes, that was a very meaningful shower at the end of the chapter, wasn't it? I think Jen Reilly wasn't thinking at the time she moved in that she'd be hiding a secret from her son for ten years - driving a wedge between them. She was thinking that there was nothing left for her in New York with her parents gone and her son having been kicked out of school twice. Sure enough, her best friend was there, encouraging her to come to her neighborhood, be among friends, raise her son in a nice place out of the city. I mean, sure, that means that Jack is back in her life, but that was just a one time thing, right? What could possibly go wrong? Who would ever figure out the connection between her son and her best friend's husband?
  24. Thanks jay! It is nice to see a stronger Dustin emerging from the pile of rubble we left him in last time!
  25. Billy is definitely telling us that there is something wrong with him that's more than just depression. No wonder he's so miserable. But having Dustin back in his life will certainly be helpful! We'll see!
