The difference is mainly semantic. Aerafael and Faelara are basically those born in wolf form and those born in human form, respectively. Being born in wolf form is rather rare, but does happen when the mother forces herself to shift while pregnant.

Yeah, the Empire is around, through they're pretty much minding their own business at the moment. A character mentions them at one point in the story.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the story ❤️ I've often heard plot holes are like a gift from the writer to their fans, letting them live and breathe in the world you've created, and I'm happy if that's how they're seen here. Unfortunately I do have to negate the idea of Jordan using magic. Magic in Astara is generally held within bloodlines, and usually shows itself by the time a mage is an adult. While Jordan's parents absolutely could have been mages themselves, it is highly unlikely he'd ever learn to use magic himself. That said, I am happy with the way things ended, and I hope I can continue to put out stories that readers will enjoy.
