New Year’s Eve. Normally a time of celebration for Lapis. But instead, he was dealing with supplicants. Again. At least most of his advisors were here, along with an unexpected guest. Jubilost had come to see this petitioner personally. Lapis fought the urge to look out the window. If he took one more glance at the snow that fell from the angry skies, he would not be able to resist the urge to run outside and start a snowball fight with any who would return his icy throws. “Your Grace!

“Excuse me?” Lapis sighed quietly, hearing the incredulous tone of Kassil. He didn’t know how much clearer he could be. It had been two weeks since returning from their last expedition. He was itching to get on the road again, but there were things that needed to be done in Ismenia. He just needed to explain them to Kassil and Kesten. Again. “I want to build a kobold quarter in the western part of the city. You refer to Kiba as Consul Sootscale. It would go a long way toward cementing

A village sat beyond the latest door, small and dilapidated. Jakun stared at the place, filled with bustling catfolk going about their business without a care in the world. In the distance, he could see a wall of dust rising into the sky, an army approaching the village swiftly. “Goblins,” Aofe provided. “At least a thousand of them. Your trial is to save the village.” “On my own?” Jakun frowned. His guide nodded. “You have an hour before they arrive. Good luck.” She van

The fox stared at the meatball suspiciously, nose quivering at the scent of the cooked meat. He had no idea what this keftedes arni was, and Galen wouldn’t tell him. The table of the taverna was loaded with various fruits and vegetables that looked a lot safer, but Galen had insisted he try one of everything, if only for the reason that he was new to Egaran food. Reinard just knew he’d be eating Cnidarian balls at some point, though he would never say that to Galen. The tiger was enjoying t

A pair of gauntlets sat on the counter, mithral blue shining through the filmy crust that tried to diminish their beauty. Faes stared at the metal gloves, silently admitting that they were a work of art, and that Lapis was right to track them down. They still needed to find the cuirass and the jaumbarts before the armour could be restored, but from what Lapis had told him, that was just a matter of returning the armour to a certain dwarf in Omestra. All they needed to do was settle on a pri

Amnor Sen stepped into the small orphanage, his eyes adjusting to the low light within. He wasn’t sure exactly why he was here; he had just been walking blindly, thinking about Erith’s child. By some accounts, Erith hadn’t tried to cross the Chasm, she had fallen. It made no sense to the elf, and he tried to puzzle out her reasons. Bringing life into the world only to abandon it seemed a cruel fate for a child. The Safe Harbour, really nothing more than a cabin squeezed between two larger h

Actually, I think Cyn might be okay with it. He's definitely in tune with the natural world, and more than that, early in the story, he was very much survival of the fittest. It doesn't seem like it would be hard to convince him that hunting weaker deer would make herds stronger while still respecting the natural order and ensuring food for the wolf pack. Now if he realizes the wolves are basically hunting for fun, *THAT* might be an issue.

I would agree that an extra step during hunting is hard, but the way I see it, Eike isn't hunting at all. He is deliberately going out of his way to murder prey shifters. And he doesn't seem to be doing it very quietly. And when you think about how many pack can smell Cyn, and understand he's a shifter himself, not falling back on your smell in a hunt just seems rather suspicious. It seems like anyone on a hunt should be able to smell a shifter, unless they're nose blind. Which is a possibility.

DEVYN The door closed inches from his nose, and Devyn whimpered, backing away from the barrier. Silence took over the house, his brother’s scent slowly fading into the stench of his mother’s rage. “Get away from the door Devyn,” Margaret said finally. “Go get ready for bed.” The wolf’s whimpers increased, his paw scratching at the door in vain. His wolf door was locked, and he was stuck inside when he needed to be outside. Who knew what would happen to his brother? How was

The fog faded in the morning sunlight. The air remained chill, winter well on its way, and Faes held back a shiver as they approached the grove. Falchos gave the group an appraising look, as though checking them for injuries. “So?” he asked. “The Scythe Tree is no more.” Faes replied. “May you finally know peace, my queen,” Tiressia said quietly. “You have earned your reward,” Falchos smiled, handing him a small chest. “Take it with our blessing and thanks.” Faes lifted

“The following trials are philosophical in nature. You do not have to worry about losing, just follow your heart,” Aofe said as they passed through the latest door. The next room contained a pile of weapons and armour, a spellbook sitting on the top. Jakun could almost feel the magical energy pouring from the gear, and he wondered what it was doing sitting here. “You can take this gear if you’d like. There is nothing bad that would happen to you,” Aofe said. “But, I would strongly sugg

The tiger crawled into bed beside Reinard, the fox staring blankly at a wall. It was far too early for them to go to bed; they’d barely been awake for fourteen hours, and he figured Reinard knew that. The Faro’s diaper was missing, and he was sitting naked on the bed, an invitation, or a challenge. Galen really didn’t know which, and he wasn’t in the mood to figure it out. “Look, I’m really sorry,” Galen murmured, his hand rubbing over the fox’s lower leg. “It’s something tigers do a lot, c

Calling Jordan off was hard, but it only would have made things so much worse. The three have to look out for each other and part of that is knowing when to kick ass and when to just take names.
-
As much as I want to reassure everyone that it gets better fron here, I don't know if it does. I'll just have to keep writing and hope everything turns out okay.

Some of us show our sorrow through laughter. Others try to use laughter to make people happier. Arisa happens to do both. About the arsonist, only time can tell. Hopefully before anyone else dies.

Spoiler alert, Damian's wolf is revealed in System of a Wolf and early in Brothers. And he is very much a wolf. I love my little catdogs

One has to wonder what those things might be. It's a total mystery

The car rumbled through the afternoon, weaving through the hills. Jordan found the purr of the vehicle easy to rest to. His potion sat beside him, a can of WolfX beside him. Contradictory liquids; one would put his wolf to bed for the night, the other would give him the energy of a wolf. But he needed both to get his family home and safe. What made sleep nearly impossible was Lysander. The elf was not okay, and they all knew it. He wouldn’t do anything crazy, like driving the car through on

“Kiba.” Faes glared at the kobold. More precisely, he stared past the kobold, at a ghoul standing motionless in the open barn doors. A gaping hole in the dead man’s chest showed the circumstances of his death… or the effects of time upon his body. A rattling breath escaped him, filling the air around him with the putridness of decaying flesh. “Kiba, back away slowly. You cannot fight the dead,” Faes continued, his eyes never leaving the ghoul. “Living ones… I do not harm… help me…

A note of warning, Damian's Wolf and Brothers are both unfinished at this point. Egaran Stars is finished, but the last chapter won't go live until after the new year.
-
I would say it gets easier, but if you do your job right, it will never be easy.
-
Yeah, writing this chapter was really hard for me, and even two years later it still makes me cry rereading it.

Amnor Sen set the plate up on the wall, Jeremy’s name looking down on the paladin. The shrine was set, an hour’s work giving him plenty of time to gather some of the cleric’s favourite things. A mug and a rapier sat in front of the nameplate, Amnor Sen stepping back to look at his work. Etching the name had been difficult, the calligraphy looked poor, but the elf had tried his hardest to make it look right, and he was satisfied with the effort. His heart still ached, but he could look past

Figures. You take out two perps and two more take their places. Well, just means a longer story is ahead of us

Dylan is about seventeen in this story, so Damian's Wolf is about eighteen years before this one. I will be doing my best to tie everything together before the end.
