emphasis - Word of the Day - Sat Jan 24, 2026

Ok, so, I know this is 'word of the day' but these are interesting instructions for how to emphasize' in writing.... Only, I suck at it! I'm looking through an old story and I'm embarrassed by all the italics and em dashes 😅 Like, I need to calm down 😅 Maybe none is better than too much???? -
Haha, super late, but.... I’m a woman writing gay fiction, but I don’t write it because it’s “safe” or “romantic.” I write it because I’m drawn to people who live on the edges, characters who don’t fit neatly, who carry damage, who are trying to build family out of what’s left. That kind of alienation isn’t owned by any one gender. It’s just human. For me, that’s what gay fiction does best when it’s written honestly. It gives space to complicated people. That’s the kind of story I want to tell.

Yup! I'm telling myself a story first. And I like surprises 😂

The Kenny thing... I didn't see it coming until it was about to happen! I was like... why is this pathetic jock so obsessed with his sis getting a guy???? OMG He's alllll alone!!!!

Shhh! Everyone's really scared right now 🤭

You know me, I'm on it 😏

I know. I liked it this way 😍 Shaun didn't have the patience for all that 😂

He absolutely just made a mess. Whether it ruins him or not… remains to be seen 👀

Shaun paced the porch like a caged animal. The sun was high and warm, but it didn’t touch the cold in his chest. His fists clenched and unclenched at his sides as he stalked back and forth, boots scuffing the old wood. His heart still hadn’t slowed. Not since Harris said the words: “If Kyle makes bail, he’ll be out by tonight.” The screen door creaked open behind him, but Shaun didn’t stop pacing. Detective Harris stepped out, squinting against the sun. He paused just a few f

Thanks for sharing your opinions guys! I think I know what to do now 😂

Aww, what's my kind of story? Humor me, I've got the worst stomach ache 😂 I'm making myself freak out because Idk what to do about Kyle now! I think I just figured out a compromise though, so, I'm slowly settling down again! It's been a very busy night writing and such 😂 OK, I should crawl back into my hole now!

I stepped down and said ONE of the first. Maybe a little dramatic, but, just wanted Shaun to know he's being watched and and that he's being obvious. OK, I'm struggling right now! I just want Shaun to do this and get away with it, but I'm really stacking the odds against him! Idk now! I guess I have to think about it...

Thanks a lot! Now I don't know which way to go! To kill or not to kill 😂 Shaun and I are really on the fence. The police *are* pretty useless but we definitely don't want to ruin everything!

Jesse turned the new calculator over in his hands, tilting it so the screen caught the light. “Cliff got it for me,” he said, a little awkward. “It’s going to make pre-calc a lot easier, that’s for sure.” Emily leaned closer, eyebrows lifting. “That thing looks expensive.” “Yeah,” Jesse shrugged. “He kind of went all out. School supplies for everyone. Backpacks, notebooks. It was… actually pretty cool.” They were sitting at one of the back tables in third period pre-calc, workshee

I know. I want to surprise, but I just automatically lay foreshadowing! Your idea about Jesse wasn't something I thought of though!

Man, I would have been so mad if you had just guessed my ultimate Jesse plan 😂

I was having a hard time thinking of how they'd get Kyle's video evidence if they couldn't get past his lock screen 😂 My phone reads my thumb print to unlock. Sometimes my hand is dirty or something and it rejects me and makes me draw my secret shape instead 😂
-
Not story related, but why would they ever allow us to lock our phones so they can't get in? Seems counterproductive in this authority-ruled world 🙄
-
OK, I've been looking up is it "impossible for police to Crack" phones? Does it matter this story is taking place 2012-2015? And really, how good is Kyle's password gonna be?

My blond English teacher was actually really mean to me. Like, in retrospect, I think she was making fun of me for sport. Miss Stevens made her first appearance in the very second chapter of this book, so, she was written years and years ago. Pretty sure she was inspired by my mean teacher... But in reverse! Because she's super supportive and recognized Shaun's talent when no one else did! So yea, Shaun doesn't have a crush on her but Sam does, for my sake. Love for supportive English teachers 💕 Also Shaun approves of Van Halen 🤘

Good idea, so there's multiple suspects when Kyle goes missing 😏

By eleven o’clock Tuesday morning, Jesse was coming apart at the seams. Sam was still gone. He’d been supposed to be home at midnight. Curfew wasn’t even something Jesse usually enforced—Sam was thirteen, not stupid—but twelve hours without a word wasn’t normal. Not even for Sam. Not even on his worst nights. Jesse sat on the living room floor, legs crossed, half-heartedly stacking plastic blocks with Brian while his mind ran in frantic circles. He kept checking the clock on his p
